James Franklin fell one run short of becoming the first Gloucestershire player this season to hit a County Championship century

29-Jun-2010

ScorecardJames Franklin fell one run short of becoming the first Gloucestershire player this season to hit a County Championship century as his side took control of the game against Middlesex at Bristol. The New Zealand allrounder was caught off a top-edged pull shot for 99, his third score in the 90s this summer. But it set up a first-innings total of 404 for 8 and a lead of 168 going into the third day. Hamish Marshall contributed 68, Alex Gidman 61 and Chris Dent 53.It was a tough day in the field for Middlesex, who were without Owais Shah for much of it because of a back problem. Pedro Collins also suffered a back injury when diving for a ball, but was able to take the second new ball after treatment. Gloucestershire began on 81 for 2 and progressed sedately as overnight batsmen Marshall and Dent consolidated with half-centuries. Marshall was first to his fifty off 75 balls, with seven fours and a six.England Under-19 player Dent has played some valuable innings in his first season of championship cricket and the left-hander again showed good temperament in facing 112 deliveries for his half-century, which featured six fours and a six. The partnership of 126 was broken when Dent fended a chest-high ball from Toby Roland-Jones to Scott Newman at short square-leg.That brought in skipper Gidman, who helped take the total to 193 for 3 at lunch. Marshall then fell to the second ball of the afternoon session, bowled pushing forward to Neil Dexter without addition to the score. When Chris Taylor was also bowled, shouldering arms in Dexter’s next over it was 199 for 5 and Gloucestershire were still 37 behind. But Gidman was well set and reached his fifty off 86 balls, with eight fours as he and Franklin produced a partnership of 76 to put their side 39 runs ahead. It ended when the captain played across a topspinner from Dawid Malan and departed lbw. Middlesex immediately took the second new ball, but neither Collins nor Tim Murtagh could force another breakthrough. At tea it was 319 for 6, with Franklin on 45. Jon Lewis made a valuable 30 and by the time he was run out by bowler Tom Smith attempting a suicidal single Gloucestershire’s lead was 88.Franklin hit five fours in a composed 87-ball fifty and then added two sixes. He looked sure to reach three figures when miscuing a short ball from Dexter and watching in horror as Smith claimed a good catch at deep square. Gloucestershire still went on to maximum batting points and look well placed to boost their promotion challenge.

  • Alisson missed Burnley clash last weekend
  • Klopp declared him fit to play against Brentford
  • But suffered hamstring setback in Friday training
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Manager Jurgen Klopp had declared his number one shot-stopper fit to feature against the Bees, but the Brazilian felt a recurrence of the same hamstring issue that saw him sidelined against Burnley last weekend. According to , Alisson suffered the injury in Friday's afternoon training session, less than a day before the clash against Brentford.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The news means Caoimhin Kelleher will almost certainly deputise between the sticks, as he did against Burnley, with Klopp left sweating on the fitness of his star goalkeeper. Liverpool are already without Dominik Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold through recent issues, adding to the long-term woes of midfield duo Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic. But Klopp was handed a major boost with the return to the squad of Mohamed Salah this weekend, after his injury while on Egypt duty at AFCON.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Alisson only missed one Premier League game all of last campaign as Liverpool had to settle for a fifth-placed spot. Already this term the Brazilian has missed four league matches, which Klopp will hope doesn't increase much further as they look to end his Reds swansong on a high.

    WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

Klopp's side will aim to clinch all three points against Brentford to go five clear at the top before Manchester City face Chelsea in the evening kick-off. Bees boss Thomas Frank recently played down notions of replacing the German in the Reds dugout when he leaves in the summer.

USMNT U20s player ratings vs Fiji: Diego Luna changes game off bench as Cade Cowell & Caleb Wiley score for wasteful U.S.

The U.S. U-20 Moon Boy came off the bench to score a goal as Mikey Varas' team left it late to beat Fiji.

Under the bright Argentinian sun, it was the rising star known as Moon Boy that changed the game for the U.S. U-20 men's national team.

Diego Luna came off the bench to help the U.S. finally break down a pesky Fiji defense with a goal in the 66th minute. He was joined on the scoresheet by Cade Cowell and Caleb Wiley, as the U.S. overcame a poor start to ultimately seal the 3-0 win they expected to earn.

The triumph over Fiji is the U.S. team's second in as many games at the World Cup, sealing their place in the knockout rounds. It didn't come easy, though, even if many thought it would. Fiji were blown out 4-0 by Slovakia in their opener, but they were better here. Their defense was somewhat stout, but they were also aided by a very wasteful U.S. performance.

A total of 16 shots failed to find the net before the 17th, Luna's effort, finally made the difference. In total, the U.S. fired 31 shots to Fiji's six , but only seven were on target. Fiji were very much in it for large stretches and it took goals from Cowell and Wiley after the 88th minute to truly seal the result.

It was an attacking performance that will raise some alarm bells for Mikey Varas, but there will also be little reason to panic given the rotations made by the U.S. head coach.

In the end, it was a win; a somewhat ugly win, but a win nonetheless. Up next is a match against Slovakia, but the U.S. will be looking ahead to the knockouts now.

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Gaga Slonina (7/10):

Had to make a save early in the second half but, other than that, not much, which makes that save all the more vital. Important to get minutes, though, even if he's rarely needed.

    Jonathan Gomez (6/10):

A few good crosses, but never got close to recreating his magic from the opener. Should get a rest against Slovakia after taking a beating from a physical Fiji team.

    Marcus Ferkranus (7/10):

An absolute wrecking ball as he left several Fiji players worse for wear. Had a few okay sequences defensively the few times Fiji got forward.

    Brandan Craig (7/10):

Didn't need to do much, but did take the free kick to tee up Wiley's tap-in. Also provided one of the funniest moments of the match when he was overheard asking the referee for 20 minutes of added time to combat Fiji's time-wasting.

    Michael Halliday(6/10):

Not too impactful. Got on the ball a few times, but no signature moments.

    Midfield

    Daniel Edelman (7/10):

A solid 80 minutes for the captain, who returned to the XI after sitting out the opener. Still key to the U.S. midfield and should be in the lineup going forward.

    Jack McGlynn (8/10):

Another standout performance from the Union homegrown. Even at such a young age, McGlynn understands how to dictate a game, and open one up with a ball over the top, and he did so again here.

    Owen Wolff (5/10):

Taken off at halftime as Varas looked to shake things up. Fairly quiet once again, all things considered.

    Attack

    Cade Cowell (7/10):

Credited with the assist on Luna's goal, and his penalty shout distracted Fiji just long enough for the RSL man to pounce. Added the second goal late on with a stunning long-range finish, which saved his score a bit in a game that lacked end product until that moment.

    Darren Yapi (4/10):

On the one hand, the Colorado Rapids star was incredibly dangerous. On the other, he seemingly found a way to place the ball everywhere other than the goal. The hope is that he can smooth that out, but he could have had several goals in this one.

    Quinn Sullivan (5/10):

Had one good chance early on, but dragged it wide, which was a theme for the U.S. throughout the first half. Sacrificed at the break for Luna, which turned out to be the right call.

    Subs & Manager

    Diego Luna (8/10):

Came on and changed the game with his goal. Created a few other chances and, like many of his teammates, could have maybe added another goal. Overall, a reminder of what Luna brings: creativity.

    Niko Tsakiris (6/10):

Important minutes for a player that still needs to shake off the rust. Didn't look quite himself, but he's on his way.

    Caleb Wiley (6/10):

Came on in the 75th minute and got his late goal to help lift the goal difference a bit. It was an easy one, too, as he tapped in from close range.

    Obed Vargas (N/A):

Replaced Edelman to add some fresh legs late in the midfield.

    Mikey Varas (6/10):

Will definitely be disappointed, but it's always better to be disappointed with a win than a loss. Made the right call to rotate and to bring Luna in when needing a goal, but the U.S. may now have to sweat out a goal difference race atop the group.

A primeira demonstração será nesta quarta no Exploria Stadium, a casa do Orlando City.

O’Brien: Could be a walkover for Knight Riders

Big Picture

Last year, Kolkata Knight Riders needed to strain every sinew to beat Kings XI Punjab in a thriller of an IPL final. The teams have undergone only minor changes in personnel since then, but watching Kings XI play this season has been like watching a team of clones lacking the cricket genes of the originals. They arrive at the Eden Gardens rock-bottom on the table, with no chance of reaching the playoffs, with none of the aura they possessed at the same time last season. None of their batsmen occupy the top 15 of the run-getters list. Glenn Maxwell has batted seven times and scored all of 75 runs. Only one of their bowlers has an economy rate below eight an over. Mitchell Johnson has conceded 9.37 runs an over, and has taken nine wickets at 37.33. They have lost their last five matches, and they needed a Super Over to pull off their last win, on April 21.Kings XI will face a Knight Riders side who have been close to unbeatable at home – they have won four out of five completed matches at the Eden Gardens – and are close to sealing their playoff berth. Knight Riders will want more than that. They will want to finish in the top two and get two shots at reaching the final.Given that they have two difficult matches coming up after this one – against fellow top-two aspirants Rajasthan Royals and a resurgent Mumbai Indians – Knight Riders will want to do everything in their power to beat Kings XI and beat them handsomely.

Form guide

Kolkata Knight Riders WWLWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Kings XI Punjab LLLLL

Watch out for…

In a wretched season for Kings XI, Sandeep Sharma has been a solitary standout, with 11 wickets at 23.00 and an economy rate of 6.65. If he can swing the new ball and make a couple of breakthroughs, he might just give his team a chance of pulling off a consolation win. After making a vital unbeaten 46 in Knight Riders’ first match of the season, Suryakumar Yadav has slid down the order and found himself without too much opportunity to contribute substantial scores. With the playoffs approaching and Knight Riders close to sealing their spot, he will want some time in the middle and a couple of scores behind him.

Stats and trivia

  • Knight Riders have beaten Kings XI in their last four meetings.
  • Three of the top six wicket-takers against Kings XI play for Knight Riders – Sunil Narine, Umesh Yadav and Morne Morkel
  • Kings XI have been involved in two Super Over matches in the IPL, and have won both. Knight Riders have played two Super Over matches as well, and have lost both.
