Leeds can sign Phillips alternative in Winks

Leeds United could sign an ideal Kalvin Phillips alternative in Spurs’ Harry Winks amid David Norris’ recent transfer claim.

What’s the story?

The Athletic’s Phil Hay had recently revealed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side rejected the opportunity to bring the England international to Elland Road on loan this season, but Norris believes that the midfielder would have been a success with the Whites.

The former Leeds midfield exclusively told Football FanCast: “I think so yeah, he’s a quality player and we’ve said before that Leeds need a little bit more back-up in that area and with what he’s done at Spurs I would have thought that would have been a good fit, a good move.”

Kalvin Phillips alternative

The £18m-rated ace has previously drawn rave reviews from his former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino about his style of play, with the Argentine even comparing him to a couple of Spanish icons.

The current Paris Saint-Germain coach said: “Harry has the profile of the perfect midfield player. His characteristics are perfect. When we talk about midfielders like Xavi and (Andres) Iniesta, he’s like this type of player. He has this capacity but he needs to take my words in a very positive way — he needs a lot of work.”

While that Xavi comparison certainly seems far-fetched given how the Spurs midfielder’s career has stalled, Winks still hasn’t lost his calmness in possession and has averaged a superb career passing accuracy of 89.4% – better than any Leeds player who featured for more than 90 minutes last season aside from the rarely-used Jamie Shackleton.

Former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson has previously suggested that Winks could be a superb alternative to Phillips.

He said: “One player I would love to see at Leeds in the Kalvin Phillips role is Harry Winks. He’s not been given his opportunity at Spurs, I think he is a fantastic player. Not only can he do the Phillips role, he can play in midfield as well,

“Someone with Winks’ quality would really add something to that Leeds side. He is able to play more advanced but can do the Phillips role when he’s not available. I would love to see Winks at Elland Road next season.”

Dean Windass has also previously thrown his weight behind a potential Leeds move for Winks, saying that Bielsa’s coaching ability could be exactly what Winks needs.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I think if Bielsa does stay and brings in his own players, they will be a top four or top six side, and Harry Winks could get into any of them teams. He’s Bielsa’s sort of player.”

If there’s an opportunity for the Whites go back in for him in January, then they should certainly do so.

Meanwhile, this Leeds ace has seen his market value decrease dramatically…

Ball: Pep Guardiola would bring Harry Kane’s game on

Former Manchester City player Michael Ball believes that manager Pep Guardiola could improve Harry Kane.

The Tottenham striker has been linked with a summer move to the Etihad Stadium, with journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that Spurs turned down a £100m bid earlier in the summer, insisting they want to keep Kane at the club.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola told the media [via Simon Stone] that: “He is a Tottenham player. If Tottenham don’t want to negotiate, it is finished. If they want to negotiate, many clubs would like to sign him, we are not an exception. We are very interested in him.”

Harry Kane published a statement on his own Twitter account on Friday, explaining that he will be returning to Tottenham on Saturday as planned and that he hasn’t refused to train, and never would.

But with the speculation linking him to Manchester City, Ball believes Pep Guardiola could improve the striker, exclusively telling the Transfer Tavern: “Harry Kane, you’d love to see him at Manchester City teaming up with De Bruyne and the other guys, I think Pep would bring Harry Kane’s game on as well, like he did with Aguero.”

Kane has been an unbelievable player for Tottenham, scoring three occasions, finishing with 25 goals in the 2015/2016 season, 29 goals in 2016/2017 and 23 goals last term.

The Cityzens have already strengthened their star-studded squad ahead of 2021/2022, completeing the signing of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for £100m, but Pep Guardiola’s very public admission that he is indeed interested in Kane’s services suggests he may be prepared to cheque book out again before the transfer window closes.

Obuya brothers miss out

Kenya have announced a 13-man squad for the first four-day match against the visiting Pakistan Academy, with brothers Collins and David Obuya along with Ragheb Aga being excluded from the side that toured Europe

Cricinfo staff12-Sep-2008Kenya have announced a 13-man squad for the first four-day match against the visiting Pakistan Academy, with brothers Collins and David Obuya along with Ragheb Aga excluded from the side that had toured Europe.Collins and David are among the more experienced Kenyan cricketers, but they did not have a happy time in their previous series – Collins played a solitary Twenty20 match while David failed to make use of the limited opportunities presented to him. Aga’s exclusion means that he is yet to play domestic cricket in Kenya since 2004, which was a point of contention when he joined the team in Europe. In 2007, Aga, who had initially gone to the UK to study, gained a British passport and was offered a one-year contract with Sussex. The side has been named even while Cricket Kenya is planning to launch an inquiry into their European tour, after there were reports of disciplinary problems to go along with a run of poor results. Kenya’s match against the Pakistan Academy begins on Saturday at the Nairobi Gymkhana.Squad: Steve Tikolo (capt), Thomas Odoyo (vice-captain), Kennedy Otieno (wk), Alex Obanda, Rakep Patel, Maurice Ouma (wk), Jimmy Kamande, Hiren Varaiya, Peter Ongondo, Elijah Otieno, Alfred Luseno, Nehemiah Odhiambo, Tony Suji.

Sheffield United: Ramsdale update emerges

Sheffield United and Arsenal have failed to agree a deal for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, according to The Athletic.

What’s the story?

Arsenal’s interest in signing Ramsdale had been well-documented, with football.london recently claiming that the Gunners were closing in on a deal to sign the Blades shot-stopper.

But The Atheltic have now revealed that any potential move is on the verge of breaking down, as both Arsenal and Sheffield United can’t agree on a fee for the 23-year-old.

The Sun’s Tom Barclay has also reported that Ramsdale is ‘gutted’ over the breakdown in talks over the potential move to the Emirates Stadium for the England international this summer.

Sheffield United are set to take on Swansea City on Saturday evening, and it remains to be seen as to whether Ramsdale will feature in Slavisa Jokanovic’s starting XI for that clash at the Liberty Stadium, with Michael Verrips starting ahead of him for their EFL Cup clash against League Two side Carlisle United in midweek.

‘Incredible’

Ramsdale was one of the few Sheffield United players to come away with much credit to their name in the 2020/21 season, as the Blades were relegated from the Premier League.

The goalkeeper had an average Whoscored rating of 6.55 from the 2020/21 campaign, which put him seventh in the list of Sheffield United’s best performers from that frustrating season.

The goalkeeper has been a long-term transfer target for Arsenal, as they looked to provide much-needed competition for Bernd Leno between the posts heading into the new league campaign.

At the age of 23, Ramsdale could have been the ideal person to do just that, with the shot-stopper having experience of playing in the Premier League to a relatively high standard.

It’s not a fair reflection to judge Ramsdale’s performances when the rest of his Sheffield United teammates struggled throughout last term, in what was a forgetful year for the Bramall Lane faithful.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has previously praised the efforts of Ramsdale, and felt as though he played an ‘incredible’ game for the Blades when they faced the Reds.

“We arrive pretty much alone with the goalie but Ramsdale played an incredible game, few outstanding saves.”

Sheffield United’s supporters will be buzzing over this update on Ramsdale’s future at the club, as he could go on to play a key role in their bid for promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking this term.

However, with The Sun’s Tom Barclay claiming that he’s not pleased with a move to Arsenal materialising, Jokanovic will have to put his arm around the 23-year-old, and convince him to play his part for the Blades this term, as he’s far too good of an option to have sat on the substitutes bench.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Odsonne Edouard links

Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard has emerged as a possible target for Crystal Palace this summer, according to The Guardian’s Ed Aarons.

And, as to be expected, a number of Eagles supporters have been sharing their thoughts to the links on social media.

According to Aarons, Edouard, who worked with Palace’s new development coach Said Aigoun at Paris Saint-Germain’s academy, is a potential target.

The Hoops forward has scored 83 goals in 169 games for the Scottish giants but is still keen on leaving Celtic Park after a move to Leicester City fell through.

Edouard, 23, has less than 12 months remaining on his Celtic contract but is thought to be valued at £20m by the Hoops.

He featured in Celtic’s first competitive game of the new campaign earlier in the week but it seems as if Selhurst Park could now be a potential destination for the French forward.

Palace fans react

Aarons posted the links to Edouard on Twitter on Wednesday evening. This is what these fans had to say, with many extremely excited over a possible move.

The successful organisation of the Asia Cup will boost Pakistan’s chances of hosting the ICC Champions Trophy in September this year, the board chairman Nasim Ashraf said.”All kinds of security arrangements will be made for the Champions Trophy,” Ashraf said after returning Thursday from the ICC’s executive board meeting in Dubai. Sri Lanka is the alternate host for the Champions Trophy in September if a final security report within 10 days of the Asia Cup finishing on July 6 demonstrates that Pakistan is unsafe.”It’s a standard process of the ICC to have a backup venue,” Ashraf said. “I was assured in the ICC’s meeting by all the members that they intend to participate in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.”We are very proud the Asia Cup is organised in such a nice and peaceful manner,” Ashraf said. “It proves that Pakistan is a country where cricket can be played safely.”New Zealand are also set to tour Pakistan for a short three-match ODI series in August, further enhancing Pakistan’s chances. Ashraf met with Justin Vaughan, CEO New Zealand Cricket, in Dubai where the PCB chief was assured the tour would go ahead.”New Zealand will arrive on August 20 and the series begins from August 24,”Ashraf said. “Two matches will be played in Faisalabad and the third inMultan.Australia postponed a tour of Pakistan in March after several bomb attacksin the wake of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination inDecember 2007, and several Australian and New Zealand players have alreadyindicated they may pull out of the tournament rather than play inPakistan.Ashraf also appreciated the ICC’s decision to change the 2006 Oval Testresult from a forfeit win for England to a draw. “The ICC and especiallythe ECB showed tremendous generosity in reversing a bad decision,” Ashrafsaid. “The decision shows that if humans can make mistakes it can becorrected by humans.”Darrell Hair, the umpire at the centre of the storm, was later banned fromthe ICC elite umpire’s panel and only returned after completing arehabilitation program last September, when he also dropped a claim ofracial discrimination against the ICC in the British High Court. Ashrafsaid that he was not sure whether Hair would officiate in the ChampionsTrophy. “I leave it to the wisdom of the ICC to do the right thing,” hesaid.

Pundit reckons Joey Veerman would improve by joining Rangers

Michael Ball thinks Rangers target Joey Veerman would take his game to a new level by playing for Steven Gerrard.

Dutch midfielder Veerman is on Gerrard’s radar this summer with the club expecting he could cost up to £7m, and the former Liverpool captain is eager to bolster his squad ahead of a Scottish Premiership title defence.

Veerman made 35 appearances for Heerenveen last season and showcased his attacking capabilities by registering nine goals and 11 assists.

However, it appears the 22-year-old has fallen out with his current employers, with Veerman claiming to VI, via the Daily Record, that Heerenveen have potentially priced him out of a move to Rangers.

The Scottish champions face competition for Veerman’s services, with Italian side Hellas Verona also interested and a bid being lodged by an unnamed club.

Ball, who enjoyed a spell with Rangers and in Dutch football during his playing career, feels Veerman would be a promising signing by the Gers and understands why the Dutchman is eager to head to Ibrox and benefit from Gerrard’s guidance.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Ball said: “The two clubs seem to be quite far away on the fee. It’s a huge opportunity if Rangers can get a guy in who seems to impress a lot of people.

“If you have the opportunity to play for Rangers Football Club, you’ve got to go. Play under Steven Gerrard and improve your game.”

Newcastle transfer update on Lemina

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a move for Mario Lemina in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Midfielders needed

Given that Joe Willock is not guaranteed to sign from Arsenal on a permanent deal, and Matty Longstaff has also been recently linked with a move away from St. James’ Park on loan, the North East club may need to bring in reinforcements in the centre of midfield.

Steve Bruce will certainly be looking to add to his squad in time for the new 2021/22 season, and midfield should be an area that he will be looking to strengthen in.

The Latest: Lemina eyed

As per the Daily Mail, the Tyneside club are reportedly interested in signing Lemina, who only has a year left on his current deal at Southampton.

The Gabon international spent last term on loan at Fulham, who find themselves relegated from the Premier League down to the EFL Championship.

The Verdict: Wait for other targets

While signing Lemina should not be completely ruled out by the Magpies, given his past experience of playing in the top flight, they should wait to see who else may become available first later on in the window.

The 27-year-old had a fine individual campaign for Fulham, wining 4.5 of his duels a game in the top flight, while also averaging 2.2 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per match (Sofascore).

However, he was not able to help enough to keep Scott Parker’s side up, and the fact that the Saints wanted to loan him out to a Premier League rival in the first place shows that they clearly do not rate him very highly.

Also earning a heavy £64,000-per-week at St. Mary’s Stadium, the Toon should avoid signing him – for now.
