    WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. international and Westerlo fullback Bryan Reynolds could be on the move with the January transfer window set to open in less than an a week.

Sources told GOAL that Plymouth have made an approach to sign Reynolds on an initial six-month loan as the club looks to fight off relegation from the English Championship. It is expected that Reynolds will be the subject of multiple bids this window from around Europe, with Plymouth being just the latest to make a push to sign the Westerlo defender.

GOALcan also confirm that Sparta Prague have also reached out to Westerlo about Reynolds, with the two sides agreeing to speak more about the terms of a deal once the winter break begins in the Belgian league. The Czech club's initial offer came it at around $2.08 million (€2 million), but Westerlo are expecting a larger fee for the defender after paying € 3.5 million to sign the American from Italian side Roma.

Belgian outlet GVA was first to report Sparta Prague's interest in Reynolds.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reynolds has been with Westerlo since 2022, having initially joined on loan from Roma. He made 34 appearances in that first season, prompting the Belgian side to make a permanent move for him ahead of the 2023-24 season.

The 23-year-old fullback, who initially left FC Dallas for Roma in 2021, was in high demand during the summer transfer window, too, with clubs in England, France and Turkey interested in signing him. GOAL confirmed that Hull City were one club that previously pursued Reynolds in the summer.

On the international level, the 22-year-old fullback has earned seven caps for the USMNT. He was a member of the Gold Cup squad in 2023, but wasn't called in by either Gregg Berhalter or Mauricio Pochettino in 2024.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Prior to his move to Roma, Reynolds was the subject of interest from several of Europe's best, including Roma and Juventus. He ultimately ended up in Rome, but his time in Italy was derailed when Paulo Fonseca, the manager who signed him, was replaced by Jose Mourinho – who was public in his criticisms of him. Fonseca is now coaching Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah in Milan.

    WHAT NEXT FOR REYNOLDS?

Reynolds was fantastic in Westerlo's final game of 2024, assisting two goals, including one to fellow American Griffin Yow. Unfortunately, though, Westerlo would fall 4-3 to Club Brugge despite Reynolds' heroics.

The club is now off until Jan. 11 for the Belgian Pro League's winter break.

West Ham in talks to loan out "quick" £50,000-a-week ace before deadline

With Friday's transfer deadline approaching, West Ham United chiefs are reportedly in talks with Real Sociedad to show the door to one of their first-team players in the final hours of the summer transfer window.

West Ham transfer news

It's been a positive summer for West Ham, who are undoubtedly among the winners of the window. The likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jean Clair-Todibo and Crysencio Summerville have all arrived, among others, to hand Julen Lopetegui the perfect start to life in London.

The popular Hammers insider has insight on the transfer which was agreed hours ago.

ByBen Goodwin Aug 30, 2024

The pressure will certainly be on the Spaniard now, however, and rightly so. What certainly helped ease that pressure was his side's first three points of the season against Crystal Palace, which saw them bounce back from opening-day defeat against Aston Villa.

Alas, with so many fresh faces arriving, sales were always inevitable in the latter stages of the window and that's exactly what the Hammers' have focused on as the market comes to a close for the summer. The likes of James Ward-Prowse and Nayef Aguerd are among those potentially heading for the exit door, with the former reportedly closing in on a deal to join Nottingham Forest on loan.

James Ward-Prowse scores from a corner for West Ham

Meanwhile, according to Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian, West Ham chiefs are in talks to loan Aguerd out to Real Sociedad in a deal that will see them get rid of the defender who has fallen down the pecking order amid the arrivals of Max Kilman and Todibo.

Earning a reported £50,000-a-week, it's no major surprise that West Ham are looking to show Aguerd the door, and one would presume Sociedad will cover some of those wages.

The centre-back was left out of Lopetegui's squad in both Premier League games so far this season and suffered the same fate in the Hammers' Carabao Cup victory over Bournemouth, creating the need for a late exit. With time running out though, Sociedad will undoubtedly need to act quickly to secure Aguerd's signature.

"Quick" Aguerd is no longer needed at West Ham

It speaks volumes that Lopetegui failed to turn towards Aguerd even in the Carabao Cup. Suddenly, the defender finds himself in a fairly dire situation and in desperate need of a move away. Sociedad would be a solid next step too. The La Liga club are likely to compete for European football once again in Spain to hand the defender a sideways step over a downward move.

West Ham, meanwhile, have the chance to clear £50k-a-week from their wage bill by showing the door to a player who once found himself at the centre of David Moyes' praise when he first arrived. Joining the Hammers in the summer of 2022, Aguerd battled back from injury to impress Moyes, who said via The Evening Standard: “I don't want to put too much on him.

“I want to give him time. But he's a good reader of the game. He's quick and he's good in the air. But because he's not played any Premier League games, it's difficult for us to give an overall judgement.

"I don't think he's ready for the Premier League games but we'll see for this European games. He's keen and he's a good character. I've got to say, we think he's a really stylish footballer."

Australia selector 'very concerned' about Ashes build-up

Trevor Hohns knows that those players also involved in the T20 World Cup will get very little red-ball preparation

Andrew McGlashan24-Apr-2021Australia’s national selector Trevor Hohns has admitted to being “very concerned” about the lack of Test cricket the team will play ahead of the Ashes next season. With the tour of South Africa last month postponed, there will be a 10-month gap between Tests when they are due to play Afghanistan in a one-off match in late November before facing England. That game against Afghanistan could be the only red-ball cricket those players also involved in the T20 World Cup will have ahead of the Ashes due to the likely need to quarantine on their return from India. For those not in the T20 set-up, Hohns expects there to be a decent amount of Sheffield Shield cricket available in the first part of the next season but he conceded it is not an ideal situation with England having a full Test season ahead of them at home.Related

Head and Wade lose Cricket Australia contracts, Green included

Talking points: Batters told to earn their spot, pace rotation on agenda

“Very concerned about that, no doubt, and hopeful that they’ll be plenty of Shield cricket – and I believe there will be – programmed leading up to the first Test,” he said. “However, that won’t help some of our players as hopefully they’ll be fully engaged in the T20 World Cup.”It’s a difficult one, England are certainly playing plenty of Test cricket and we haven’t got anything on the plate so it’s a concern.”There will be at least two Test batting positions vacant leading into the next home summer following the announcement of a trimmed down central contracts list that only included three specialist Test batters – David Warner, Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne – along with allrounder Cameron Green. An opening partner for Warner will need to be found – Will Pucovski will be the frontrunner if he recovers from shoulder reconstruction – along with a middle-order batter to fill the No. 5 spot which rotated between Travis Head and Matthew Wade against India, both of who lost their contracts. Will Pucovski made a promising start to his Test career but has since undergone shoulder surgery•Getty Images”There’s no secret that there are positions available whether that’s middle order or the top of the list,” Hohns said. “Yes, it is a concern because there’s no standout but that’s what we are challenging our players to really put their hands up at the start of next season then get into the Australia side and perform well when they do.”There may also be conversations about whether the bowling attack needs freshening up with Hohns indicating that rotation is likely to be forced on the fast bowlers to ensure they aren’t flagging towards the end of the series as happened against India where Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins played throughout alongside Nathan Lyon. While Green’s introduction provided somebody to share the burden he did not take a wicket in the series.James Pattinson was retained on the contracts list despite playing just four Tests in the last five years with Hohns terming him “our premier back-up fast bowler” although Jhye Richardson and the uncontracted Michael Neser will also come into contention. The initial part of the new contract period will be heavily focused on T20 with the World Cup in October and a number of the players on the list are likely to only feature in white-ball cricket. Hohns said that the idea of offering separate white and red-ball deals had been floated but it was still some way off being an option.”It’s an interesting conversation and while we have mentioned that we are not quite ready for that yet, but it may progress to that down the track because it’s becoming more obvious that players are specializing in the different formats. Certainly something to be looked at down the track.”There’s a little bit of focus on T20 cricket but we also try to make sure we remain focused on the fact that Test cricket to us, and hopefully to our players, is the prime form of the game. We see that as the top of tree, but there is a T20 World Cup coming up so we’ve had to cover a core group of players we think will feature in this list.”

Slot’s own Coutinho: Liverpool ready to fight Man City for £51m ace

The dawn of the 2024/25 campaign will soon poke over the horizon, and Liverpool's new head coach Arne Slot is gearing up his squad for an attack on major honours and the forefront of the Premier League.

While there has been a lack of transfer activity at Anfield this summer, sporting director Richard Hughes, also new, has stressed that there could be a "crescendo" in the market come August.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

FSG love to secure a tidy deal and will pounce if the right opportunity materialises. Well, if one report is to be believed, the perfect new attacking midfielder might be ready to complete a transfer to a success-driven outfit such as Liverpool.

Liverpool transfer news

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool are alongside Manchester City in hoping to sign Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig this summer, with the Euro 2024 champion valued at €60m (£51m) by his German outfit.

Separate reports suggest that Pep Guardiola's side have lodged an official offer for the 26-year-old, so Liverpool will need to up the ante if they are to sign one of Europe's hottest commodities right now.

Why Dani Olmo could be Slot's own Coutinho

Few players lit up the international scene this summer like Olmo, whose clinical, talismanic efforts helped fire Spain toward a record-breaking fourth European Championship title.

Dani Olmo at Euro 2024
Dani Olmo at Euro 2024

Olmo's all-encompassing attacking game marks him as a truly deadly outlet, and Liverpool would go from strength to strength with him in the side. For Leipzig last season, while stricken by injury, the £152k-per-week talent scored eight goals and added five assists despite only registering 20 starts.

He ranked among the top 12% of positional peers at Euro 2024 for goals, assists and successful take-ons and the top 20% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, with his "magic" ability with a football – as noted by talent scout Jacek Kulig – setting him up to become Slot's very own version of Philippe Coutinho.

A mesmerising player, Coutinho is one of the Reds' most iconic modern stars, posting 54 goals and 43 assists across 201 games for Liverpool and being sold to Barcelona in a jaw-dropping £142m deal.

That was the watershed moment in Jurgen Klopp's reign, opening up a new, previously unthinkable depth of coffers to spend on the likes of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk and take the club to a new level entirely.

As you can see above, the Brazil international, now 32, was beyond brilliant during those final, pre-Barca days, meshing it all together to establish himself as one of Europe's finest.

Transfermarkt's Marcel Veth has hailed Olmo as a "joy to watch" but he is also one of the most complete players around, winning four duels and completing 1.2 tackles on average in the German top flight last season, as per Sofascore.

Liverpool have a superabundance of attacking talent at Slot's disposal, but Olmo would offer something different and might even prove to be the second coming of an unforgettable phenomenon in Coutinho.

Rangers could ditch Goldson by signing a star who was once "generational"

Glasgow Rangers will have a number of big decisions to make throughout the summer transfer window, with players coming in and out of Ibrox.

Head of recruitment Nils Koppen has already been hard at work on the former, with deals for Oscar Cortes, Jefte, and Clinton Nsiala already agreed.

FAR Rabat attacker Hamza Igamane is also reportedly closing in on a permanent move to the Scottish giants to bolster Philippe Clement's attacking options.

Meanwhile, John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Jon McLaughlin, Ryan Jack, and Kemar Roofe have left the club to become free agents, after their contracts expired at the end of last month.

Borna Barisic

There may, however, be further exits from Glasgow as the Light Blues could look to cash in on some of their contracted players to generate funds for more new signings to improve the team before the window slams shut at the end of August.

One current first-team star who could be moved on to make way for a replacement in his position is experienced central defender Connor Goldson, amid links to an addition in that area of the park.

Rangers' interest in £4m colossus

It was recently reported by Austrian media, via The Scotsman, that the Gers are one of the sides interested in a swoop to sign Salernitana defender Flavius Daniliuc this summer.

The report claimed that both Old Firm sides – Rangers and Celtic – are eyeing up the 23-year-old colossus, who was signed from Nice for £4m in 2022, to bolster their defensive options ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

It stated that both of them are in the market to add new centre-backs to their ranks as they look to protect their respective goalkeepers more next term.

Daniliuc spent the 2022/23 season on loan with RB Salzburg in his home country but it has been reported that they have decided not to take up their option to sign him on a permanent basis, although they may look to agree another deal for him later in the window.

Meanwhile, Football Insider have reported that Steven Gerrard is pushing to snap up Goldson from Rangers to improve his Al-Ettifaq squad in Saudi Arabia.

The outlet stated that the Gers do not want to lose the veteran defender but could be forced to cash in on him if a 'big' offer arrives on their desk from the Pro League side.

Football Insider added that Nsiala's arrival would help to replace Goldson but that a more experienced option would be required, and that is where Daniluic could come in and allow Clement to brutally ditch the Englishman.

Why Rangers should cash in on Connor Goldson

The 31-year-old central defender enjoyed a solid season at the back for the Gers in the Scottish Premiership but this could be the ideal time to cash in on him.

At the age of 31, the English battler is heading into the final throes of his playing career and may not have much development, if any, left in him, which means that his value may not be any higher than it is now.

Connor Goldson and James Tavernier

With two years left on his contract, the Light Blues would also be in an uncomfortable position next summer as he would only have one year left and they would risk losing him for nothing the following year if they did not sell him for a cut-price in 2025.

Therefore, this summer could be the optimal time to sell the former Brighton & Hove Albion man, particularly amid interest from Al-Ettifaq and Gerrard, as the Pro League side could offer them a chance to rake in some cash that they can then reinvest before the end of the window.

As you can see in the table above, Goldson was an important player for Rangers in the Premiership this season as he started 30 of their 38 league games.

The right-footed titan showcased his physical dominance by winning the majority of his contests on the deck and in the air against opposition players.

However, Clement can now brutally ditch the experienced star by signing Daniliuc to replace him, which would allow the Scottish giants to cash in on him amid the interest from Gerrard's team.

Why Rangers should sign Flavius Daniliuc

Firstly, the 23-year-old is eight years younger than Goldson and would arrive at Ibrox as a player with the potential to be a key defender for many, many, more years to come.

If he can adapt to Scottish football and establish himself as an important piece in Clement's system, Rangers could have a starting centre-back for a very long time unless they opt to sell him on at a later date.

His form in the Austrian Bundesliga during the second half of the season and the Serie A during the first half of the campaign suggest that the potential is there for him to be a strong addition to the squad.

As you can see in the table above, Daniliuc could come in and offer more in build-up play than Goldson, as he has averaged more progressive passes, shot-creating actions, and progressive carries per 90 over the last year, despite attempting fewer passes.

This suggests that Clement could improve how frequently his team can build attacks by progressing the ball out from the back by signing the Salernitana ace to bolster his backline.

The Austria international also won 52% of his duels in the Bundesliga and 57% of his aerial battles in the Serie A, which shows that he can win the majority of his battles on the pitch, albeit not as efficiently as the current Gers titan.

Back in 2021, U23 scout Antonio Mango hailed him as a "generational" talent and "Rolls Royce" for Nice, before his move to Salernitana, and the Light Blues could hope to unlock that potential at Ibrox.

Rangers eyeing "remarkable" 31-goal star who'd be lethal with Cantwell

The Light Blues are reportedly looking at the marksman as a possible option for this summer’s window.

ByDan Emery Jun 16, 2024

The 23-year-old's statistics suggest that the quality is there for him to hit the ground running as an excellent replacement for Goldson, particularly with his use of the ball, whilst the young defender could also grow and improve under Clement over the years to come.

Contact made: Arsenal looking at £43m star who’s "competition for Saka"

28 wins, 89 points – a record that would have seen Arsenal win the Premier League title in 15 previous seasons, as well as finish joint-top in a further five.

That is a reminder of the levels that Mikel Arteta's side reached in 2023/24, although that remarkable run will count for nothing if it is not built on next term, with quality recruitment needed to help bridge that minute gap with rampant champions, Manchester City.

Talk is already rife that the Gunners have their eyes fixed on a new centre-forward signing in the form of RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, although the Slovenian sensation may not be the only exciting, young attacker to arrive at the Emirates in the near future.

Arsenal in the race for Eredivisie star

According to Het Belang van Limburg – via Sport Witness – the north Londoners and rivals Liverpool are said to be among the clubs who have made an approach for PSV Eindhoven star, Johan Bakayoko, with German giants Bayern Munich also in the mix.

Having previously turned down the likes of Brentford and Burnley last year, the 21-year-old could finally be on his way to England if Arsenal get their way, with the Belgian having caught the eye since making his first-team debut in 2022.

Johan Bakayoko for PSV

As per the report, there have been claims that the wing wizard could be available for a fee of around €50m (£43m), representing a cheaper alternative to another reported Gunners target, in the form of Crystal Palace's £60m ace, Michael Olise.

How Bakayoko compares to Olise and Saka

The suggestion at present is that Arteta and co are keeping an eye on the in-demand Olise this summer, with the 22-year-old courting attention from a raft of top-flight clubs after contributing 16 goals and assists in just 19 games this season for the Eagles.

If the Emirates outfit do wish to consider a possible rival or alternative to the former Reading man, then they should look no further than Bakayoko, with the PSV dynamo also able to offer that creative, clinical spark from the right flank.

A left-footer like Olise, the youngster is a real "handful for defenders" – in the words of broadcaster Jack Collins – having bettered the Palace man's return with 12 goals and nine assists in the Eredivisie this season.

With 14 goals and 14 assists in all competitions in total, the wideman now boasts a haul of 40 goal involvements in just 85 games for his current side – remarkably similar to Olise's 41 goals and assists in 90 games at Selhurst Park.

A worthy option in place of Olise, the suggestion is that Bakayoko could also potentially even threaten Bukayo Saka's regular role on the right flank, with data analyst Ben Mattinson noting that he would represent "genuine competition for Saka" in that wide berth.

Also described as the right-winger with the "profile most similar" to the England international, in the words of Mattinson, Bakayoko compares favourably to Saka with regards to his ball retention, dribbling prowess and ability to beat a man – as indicated below.

Of course, operating in the Premier League is a different kettle of fish to the Dutch top flight – as the likes of Antony have found out at Manchester United – yet it seemingly bodes well for the impact that the ten-cap Belgium international could make under Arteta.

With no real obvious competitor to Saka at present in the senior ranks, signing someone to keep the Hale End hero on his toes – and afford him the chance to be rested on occasion – could work a treat.
