Billy Godleman bemoans failure to adapt to 'excessive turn' of semi-final pitch

Derbyshire captain says he hopes side learn from their heavy defeat in the semi-final against Essex

Matt Roller at Edgbaston21-Sep-2019Billy Godleman suggested the Edgbaston pitch had offered “excessive turn” and bemoaned his side’s failure to adapt to conditions after losing their T20 Blast semi-final against Essex.Derbyshire lost eight wickets to spin – four to Simon Harmer, three to Aron Nijjar and one to Dan Lawrence – and struggled badly in the middle overs after flying out the blocks, and Godleman suggested that “the better team won” on the day.”There was excessive turn,” he said, “which obviously provides challenges for hitting boundaries, but our job as professionals is to adapt to whatever conditions we’re given, and try to find a way to be effective.”Unfortunately for us, Essex were a lot better at that today than we were.”Godleman said that he was “slightly concerned” at the interval after Essex had posted 160 for 5 – the highest total across the two semi-finals – and that his side had conceded an above-par total.”I thought the way that Alex [Hughes], Matthew [Critchley], and Luis [Reece] bowled,” he said, “taking pace off in the middle, I could see that it would be difficult against their spinners in the second half of the game. I thought anything over 140 would be difficult.”But Godleman reflected that his side had come a long way in the past three seasons, which have all been under the stewardship of specialist T20 coaches – first John Wright, and then this season Dominic Cork.”We’re very proud, very happy with the accomplishment of making it to Finals Day. It’s obviously bittersweet – you get here, you’re part of the day, it’s such a great atmosphere, and you just think ‘win two games and we’ll lift the trophy’.”I think once these 24-48 hours pass by, the real context of what we’ve done as a club, playing with only one overseas player, giving opportunities to a lot of our talented homegrown cricketers, and being able to beat a lot of the big counties home and away, make it to Finals Day – we’re really proud.”Godleman suggested that his side had taken plenty from their quarter-final loss to Hampshire in 2017, and said that in the future he hoped they would reflect on this defeat as something to learn from in the future.”Two years ago, we made a quarter-final and got beaten quite badly by Hampshire,” he said. “This year, we made a quarter-final, we won it convincingly, and some of the guys who played in the defeat to Hampshire a few years ago really gained from that experience.”Hopefully next year, or in the next 24 months, we can make another Finals Day and draw upon this experience.”

    WHAT MARTINO SAID

Ian Fray – on his first MLS appearance in 11 months – and Leo Campana did just that against Columbus, as they netted inside the opening 21 minutes – and Martino told reporters afterwards of seeing his side battle their way to a 2-1 win: “I told the players, ‘we're going to play a team that is better than us’. We knew that we had to play this kind of match. With all the work they’ve done, all the confidence that they have in their players and the confidence that they have in their system, Columbus is not an opponent against whom it’s easy to come and dispute possession of the ball against them. We did very well during the first half, and we used the transitions. The idea is that the three forwards were playing against the three centre-backs and pressuring, and playing three against three when they attack, and that's what they did very well. We knew that we would have a match where we're going to suffer. But we also knew that if we were orderly and applied ourselves, the match would give us some positive results.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Luis Suarez is also on Copa duty at present with Uruguay, while Inter Miami have lost a number of players to injury, but youngsters such as Noah Allen, Benja Cremaschi, Yannick Bright, Leo Afonso and Shanyder Borgelin are stepping up to the plate. Martino added on the contribution of those that would not be regular starters in normal circumstances: “They became good names in a difficult time for the team last year. So they are perfectly used to continue with their situation and we're very happy with how they play. All the young ones are showing up when we need them. They know what happens when we have all of our roster complete. But right now it's their turn and they have to face it.”

Premier League club now actively trying to sell "superb" Leeds target

Daniel Farke and Leeds United need to strengthen at right-back this month. Djed Spence has returned to parent club Tottenham Hotspur halfway through was meant to be a season-long loan spell, and Luke Ayling has joined Middlesbrough until the end of the season. If the gap goes unfilled, Farke may be concerned about being caught short as he bids to steer his side to promotion from the Championship.

One player who's emerged as a target is West Ham's Ben Johnson. The Athletic's Phil Hay has named him as a player of interest for the Whites, with his ability to play in either full-back role no doubt a considerable draw. Significantly, there's now been an update on Johnson's availability in January.

West Ham make stance on Johnson clear

According to The Daily Mail, West Ham want to sell Leeds target Johnson, rather than loan him out. The player has rejected the offer of a new contract, and his current terms are due to expire in the summer, so that puts pressure on the Irons to cash in rather than risk losing him for nothing.

Leeds United transfer target Ben Johnson before a Premier League game with West Ham.

In addition, West Ham know that they could put the proceeds from the prospective sale towards a new attacker, which is on the agenda at the London Stadium in the next couple of weeks. Leeds' interest is real but they have yet to make an "official approach" so the 49ers will need to stump up the cash soon, as Sheffield United and Scottish Premiership title-chasers Rangers are keeping an eye on his situation too.

Johnson has edge over Williams and Roberts

Former West Ham star Trevor Sinclair has previously dubbed Johnson, a two-time winner of West Ham's young player of the year award, "superb", but would he be the best fit for Farke?

He's been limited to two Premier League appearances under David Moyes this season, only one from the start, but a couple of Leeds' other targets in the top flight also find themselves down the pecking order. Nottingham Forest's Neco Williams has only started four matches, while Burnley's Connor Roberts hasn't made the XI since late October. The table below compares the players in their experience, one-v-one defending and attacking output, all surely key criteria in Leeds' search.

You can see that, even though there's a disparity in appearances, they're all in the same bracket for starts and broadly aligned for minutes too. Williams stands out going forward, and while he's won the highest volume of tackles, it's Johnson who has posted comfortably the best success rate. As an all-round option, then, he may have the edge on the other two, and crucially, he's available for transfer. The big question now is how much West Ham will demand, and whether that's within Leeds' budget for the mid-season market.

James Harris, Dawid Malan summon fight for Middlesex

Despite being made to follow on after Nathan Buck’s five-for, Middlesex reaches 109 for 2 and with hope of saving the game

ECB Reporters Network07-Apr-2019

James Harris and Dawid Malan gave Middlesex hope of saving the game at Northampton with fifties at the start and end of the third day. Harris’ first-innings 61 not out reduced the deficit to 174 and then, having been asked to follow on, Malan went to the close unbeaten on 55 as Middlesex ended a day of uniform grey cloud 109 for 2, trailing by 65.Having been dominated for the first two days of the match, Middlesex desperately needed a response and Harris provided one in the morning session. Resuming on 134 for 7, Harris and Toby Roland-Jones finally got to grips with their task and calmly added 59 for the eighth wicket through several back-foot punches and a two very sweet straight drives from Harris. The Welshman was dropped on 25 – a sharp low chance to Jason Holder’s left boot – and then went through to fifty in 92 balls with six fours. The pair occupied the first hour before Roland-Jones was trapped lbw by Nathan Buck. But Steven Finn made an enterprising, if fortuitous 34, to add another 74 for the ninth wicket before Buck wrapped up the innings four overs after lunch – Finn driving to second slip and No. 11 Tim Murtagh holing out to mid-off – to seal a five-wicket haul. Not deterred by their horrific collapse here last season, when Northants lost having asked Middlesex to follow-on, Alex Wakely sent the visitors in again and Buck struck twice with the new ball – Nick Gubbins driving to Holder at second slip before Stevie Eskinazi found third slip to fall for a second-ball duck.At 10 for 2 and still more 150 behind, Middlesex were sliding out of the game but Sam Robson survived numerous plays-and-misses to anchor the innings and Malan found some good touch at the other end. He was particularly fluent after a rain-extended tea where 64 runs came in 13 overs, cutting and driving with purpose to reach his half-century in 60 balls. The third-wicket stand had added 99 before bad light ended the day 22 overs early. With a showery forecast for the final day, Northants might be concerned about forcing a victory their performance from the first two days has set them up for.

Middle order a worry for Kings XI Punjab as Mumbai Indians look to improve home record

Big picture

Kings XI Punjab return to a venue where KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya brought the jersey swapping ritual to a cricket field. Before that game, Kings XI were in control of their own fate, but defeat that night meant they fell into the proverbial lottery of the IPL, having to depend on other teams to ensure progress into the playoffs. The Wankhede Stadium itself can be quite a lottery, exemplified by Mumbai Indians’ inconsistent record here. Since last year, they have won only four out of nine matches in Mumbai.

Question mark over Rohit’s fitness

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma had an injury scare ahead of the match against Kings XI Punjab. While training on the match eve, at the Wankhede Stadium, Rohit fell on the ground near the square boundary because of what looked like a hamstring or thigh issue with his right leg. He was immediately tended to by the team physio Nitin Patel, before he got up and gingerly walked back to the pavilion with Patel. The injury did not look very serious though; Rohit walked up the stairs to the dressing room without any support.

Both teams beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in their previous fixtures, but where Mumbai wrought a comeback out of thin air, Kings XI nearly did the opposite, before Rahul held his nerve to take his team home. After battling form for most of last year in India colours and losing his place in the Test and ODI set-ups, Rahul has emerged as King’s XI’s highest run-getter this season. Furthermore, he averages an incredible 94.5 against Mumbai playing for Kings XI.4:09

‘Alzarri Joseph bowling better than he did at U-19 WC’ – Ishan Kishan

But while the visitors can celebrate the form of their top order, a largely untested middle order will be a worry. Their other concern at a high scoring venue where the fingerspin of R Ashwin – their highest wicket-taker so far – might be nullified by the conditions, is the lack of a sixth bowling option. David Miller loyalists since 2012, will Kings XI leave him out for Moises Henriques to attain the desirable balance for the venue?Conversely, Mumbai are so well balanced that they are often accused of not utilising some of their players. So far, their middle order has come to the fore, as has their bowling. The openers are yet to fire, but perhaps it’s an ominous sign for oppositions that Mumbai are healthily placed in the table without a major contribution from Rohit Sharma or Quinton de Kock.

In the news

Lasith Malinga continues to live two lives. Having led his side Galle to a win in the Super Four Provincial Limited Over Tournament three days back, Malinga was back training at the Wankhede on the eve of the match. A little snag: his replacement Alzarri Joseph produced the best bowling figures in IPL history on debut in the last match. As a result, Malinga’s mere availability is unlikely to guarantee him a place in the XI.KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya have a chat after the game•BCCI

Previous meeting

Mumbai faltered with the bat towards the end in Mohali, managing just 56 runs in the last seven overs, despite wickets in hand. On a flat pitch, their eventual total of 176 was gunned down by a strong top-order performance which included forties from Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal – the player of the match – and an unbeaten 71 from KL Rahul.

Likely XIs

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Rahul Chahar, Alzarri Joseph, Jasprit Bumrah, Jason BehrendorffKings XI Punjab: KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, Sarfaraz Khan, David Miller/Moises Henriques, Mandeep Singh, Sam Curran, R Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Mujeeb ur Rahaman, Ankit Rajpoot

Strategy punt

  • R Ashwin has been flexible with his own introduction into the attack. During the last match at home, he came on once the field was spread. But he faces a curious dilemma in Mumbai, where dew could play a part. If it does, he may want to get some tight overs out of the way with the new ball, a move also merited by the presence of the left-handed de Kock. But if they stick with Mujeeb ur Rahman in the XI, then the Afghan can get the Powerplay out of the way, and Ashwin can target coming on during the middle overs, in particular to have a crack at Kieron Pollard, whom he has dismissed four times in 39 balls, going at a little more than seven an over.
  • Contrary to conventional wisdom, Mumbai Indians have a far better record defending totals at home in the last two years, than chasing them. They have won five of the eight times they have batted first at the Wankhede in the last two years, as opposed to suffering five losses in the nine matches they have chased in this period. Will they stick to their strength or let the reputation of the venue for being a tough defending ground, dictate terms?

Stats that matter

  • Of all the bowlers to have bowled 90 or more balls to Rohit Sharma in T20s, Ashwin (and Piyush Chawla) has dismissed him the least number of times: one. While he has taken Chawla for 146 in the 113 balls he has faced from the leggie, against Ashwin, Rohit has been watchful, explained by a strike-rate well under a hundred. In fact, among all bowlers to have bowled 50 or more balls to Rohit, Ashwin has the best economy rate of 5.12, having conceded just 82 from 96 balls.
  • Even though both Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga have kept Chris Gayle tied down, they have collectively dismissed him only thrice in 147 balls. Curiously, Ben Cutting has dismissed Gayle four times, the most for any Mumbai bowler. Cutting, however, has been taken for 63 in 37 balls as well.
  • Before losing by three runs to Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede last year, Kings XI had won three on the trot at the venue, having batted first on each of those occasions. On two of those occasions, Kings XI posted scores in excess of 220 – 226 against Chennai Super Kings in the 2014 playoffs, and 230 against Mumbai Indians in 2017.

Journalist drops claim as Liverpool named in Joao Palhinha transfer race

Liverpool have their eyes on an "amazing" defensive midfielder who could be a difference-maker in the Premier League title race, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Liverpool linked with Andre Trindade

Much was made of the Reds' struggles in midfield throughout last season, with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson a far cry from the players they used to be when they sealed title glory in 2019/20. It was clear that major surgery was needed in the middle of the park, so Jurgen Klopp focused exclusively on that area, offloading dead wood and bringing in four new signings.

The difference has been immeasurable to date, with Dominik Szoboszlai the star addition to date, but Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo all providing more energy.

There have been calls from some supporters to sign a proper No.6 like Fabinho at his peak, though, with Mac Allister largely doing well in the deep-lying role, but naturally more of a No.8. Fluminense ace Andre has been talked about as an option for the Reds, but those rumours do appear to have quietened of late.

Liverpool have their eyes on Joao Palhinha

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said Liverpool are interested in signing Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, claiming it could help turn them into Premier League champions:

Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha.

"I'm surprised Liverpool haven't already made their move on Palhinha if they were going to do it. They've had their eye on him for the past year and it seems very clear to me that Palhinha is a player that they could do with.

"If Palhinha was playing number six for Liverpool, I think that they would have a much better chance of going on to win the league this season than they would without him. Certainly when you see Alexis Mac Allister having to play that role. There doesn't seem to be a defined person right now at Liverpool who can play that role."

There is no doubt that Palhinha is an impressive midfielder who can be so dominant in the middle of the park, standing out so often in a Fulham shirt. In fact, no Premier League player has made more tackles so far this season than Palhinha, and exactly the same applied last term, when his tally of 147 was 47 more than second-place Moises Caicedo (100). His teammate Alexsandar Mitrovic is a huge admirer, too, saying of him in the past:

"I think this year there’s been some sensational [signings] that we have made. For me personally, [Joao] Palhinha is the signing of the season so far, amazing, amazing [player]."

That being said, Palhinha is now 28 years of age, so he could drift past his peak relatively soon after joining Liverpool, and the money that Fulham will demand could make it a risk.

Klopp isn't one to sign players of this ilk, especially midway through the season, so it feels far more likely that he will end up sticking with the midfielders already in his squad, hoping they can do enough to get over the finish line in the title race.

Wants to quit: "Great" Everton ace determined to leave Goodison in January

Everton could have an opportunity to offload one of their first-team players in January after it emerged that interest has surfaced in his services from elsewhere.

Everton's 10-point deduction…

As everyone will now know, Everton are at the centre of a storm that has hit the headlines in the Premier League over the last few weeks following their controversial 10-point deduction for financial breaches, which they have since appealed and hope to find the outcome of out before the end of the campaign.

The outlet indicate that the Toffees haven't been informed by the independent commission why the figure of 10 points was deemed appropriate and they are of the belief that receiving a sporting penalty for financial irregularities away from the field is unfair.

Outside of the media circus surrounding docked points at Goodison Park, it is easy to forget that Sean Dyche's men are also embroiled in a takeover saga on Merseyside as 777 Partners look to secure control of the club.

Nevertheless, The Sun claim that any deal that would involve the organisation purchasing Everton could be cast into oblivion after it emerged that the US Department of Justice are probing alleged money laundering offences committed by the firm, of which 777 deny all charges.

Everton eyeing "sensation" who's earning rave reviews in his country

The Toffees could land a star for the future…

ByTom Cunningham Dec 6, 2023

777 co-owners Josh Wander and Steven Pasko are currently undergoing the Premier League's Owners and Directors' Test. At the same time, the 12-week deadline initially given for the completion of the sale after Farhad Moshiri agreed to pass on his 94% stake in the Blues has now passed, creating more uncertainty to pile on to the trials and tribulations suffered over a rocky few years at Goodison Park.

Meanwhile, on the transfer front, Everton could now have the opportunity to sell one of their out-of-favour stars and gain a financial boost come January.

Tottenham Hotspur want Ben Godfrey

According to 90min, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to push to sign Everton defender Ben Godfrey as they look to bring in defensive cover once the transfer window opens. The report states that the England international is on the Lilywhites' shortlist and has impressed scouts in N17 over the years.

Godfrey is reportedly determined to leave Goodison Park after falling down the pecking order under Dyche and could be available for a fee of £20 million plus add-ons. Jarrad Branthwaite is also a target for the north Londoners; however, the Toffees will resist any offers for the former PSV Eindhoven loanee in January.

Labelled "great" by former Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand, Godfrey has made 79 appearances in all competitions during his time on Merseyside, registering three assists in the process (Godfrey statistics – Transfermarkt).

Nevertheless, a move away from his current surroundings is becoming an increasingly likely prospect and could give Dyche some valuable resources for the January transfer window, making this one to watch.
