Leverkusen legend Carsten Ramelow has warned that the club's new-look squad "can't yet match the quality" of departed stars Florian Wirtz and Granit Xhaka, but has backed new manager Ten Hag to succeed. In an interview with , the former Germany international stated that while the Dutchman faces a "very difficult" situation following a summer of major upheaval, his plan is "not doomed" and he represents a "good solution" for the club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Leverkusen have undergone a massive summer rebuild following the departure of title-winning coach Xabi Alonso and a host of key players including Wirtz, Xhaka, Jonathan Tah and Jeremie Frimpong. The exodus was expected after two seasons of unprecedented success that put their top talent on the radar of Europe's biggest clubs. Ramelow has urged for expectations to be lowered as Ten Hag takes charge of a team featuring "many young and inexperienced players."

When backing Ten Hag to succeed in the monumental task of replacing Alonso, Ramelow drew a parallel with Liverpool. He noted that when Jurgen Klopp left Anfield, "everyone thought the world was coming to an end," yet his successor Arne Slot went on to win the Premier League title in his first season, proving that "anything is possible."

  • WHAT RAMELOW SAID

On the difficulty of Leverkusen's situation, Ramelow said: "Very difficult indeed. But it's important to evaluate the past two years differently. They were truly special. So exceptionally good and incredibly difficult to top. What's coming next needs to be put into perspective and assessed sensibly. This means: Not everything below first or second place is necessarily bad. Expectations need to be lowered. For everyone—the players, the bosses, and the fans. Nevertheless, they will once again have a team that can compete at the top. I definitely see Leverkusen in the top five."

He added: "The coaching position is crucial. Xabi Alonso quickly recognized what was important and shaped the team. I was particularly impressed by how they never gave up. The team's mentality and attitude were outstanding. The new coach's biggest task now will be to achieve a similar result. However, many young and inexperienced players have joined the team so far. They can't yet match the quality of a Wirtz, Tah, or Xhaka.

"For me, Ten Hag is a good solution. It's fundamentally important to give him a fair chance and avoid comparisons to Alonso. It's not easy to follow in the footsteps of such a successful coach – but that doesn't mean this plan is doomed. I like to think of Liverpool FC and Jürgen Klopp. When he left the Reds, everyone thought the world was coming to an end. In the end, they won the championship with Arne Slot. Anything is possible."

    WHAT NEXT FOR BAYER LEVERKUSEN?

Ten Hag will lead his rebuilt side into the new Bundesliga season, which kicks off this weekend. His immediate challenge is to integrate the new signings and establish his philosophy following the mass exodus of established stars. Ramelow believes Leverkusen can still secure a top-five finish, and their non-participation in this summer's strenuous Club World Cup could prove to be a physical advantage over their rivals as the season progresses.

'A real shocker': Wasim and Waqar slam Afridi's Sydney omission

“These guys have to understand and learn, if you want to be a great of the game or do you want to be a millionaire,” Wasim said

Danyal Rasool03-Jan-2024Former Pakistan fast bowlers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis were scathing in their criticism of the decision to rest Shaheen Shah Afridi from the third Test at the SCG.Wasim claimed the decision “had nothing to do with the management” and was “solely [Shaheen’s] decision”, warning players more broadly they had to decide “if you want to be a great of the game or do you want to be a millionaire” when it came to deciding which format to prioritise.”Straight after this there are five T20s in New Zealand, and Shaheen’s the captain,” Wasim said on . “But T20 cricket, who cares? I understand, it’s there for entertainment and it’s there for financial gain for cricket boards, for players, but cricketers should know that Test cricket is the ultimate.Related

Shahid Afridi: Rauf should be part of Test side instead of BBL

“If we talk about what happened 20 years ago in this Test in Sydney, nobody knows what happened last night in T20. That’s the difference. These guys have to understand and learn, if you want to be a great of the game or do you want to be a millionaire. You can become both but with a little more sense.”Waqar was similarly surprised, saying Afridi’s absence “made me laugh”.”That’s a real shocker for me because I was expecting him to be a part of this Test match because he looked good in the previous match. He started feeling like the old Shaheen Afridi and started to swing the ball and the pace was getting better.”

Afridi’s workload was a matter of concern for Pakistan over the first two Tests. Leading a depleted, inexperienced fast bowling line-up without a lead spinner in the first two Tests, he bowled four balls short of 100 overs, almost 30 more than the second busiest bowler of the series, Nathan Lyon. His workload over a wider period of time has also become an issue as he assumed greater responsibility in white-ball cricket. He is the captain of Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League, and signed a three-year deal with the ILT20 last year.He was also appointed captain of the Pakistan T20I side, which he will take charge of in New Zealand in a five-match T20I series that starts five days after the scheduled end of the third Test. Despite spending time out with injury, only eight pace bowlers have bowled more balls than Afridi in international cricket since July 2022.Ahead of the series, Haris Rauf had made himself unavailable, instead opting to take up his BBL deal with Melbourne Stars.

Prabhsimran, Brar knock Delhi Capitals out of IPL 2023

On a pitch where none of his team-mates crossed 20, Prabhsimran scored a 65-ball 103 to secure two crucial points for Kings

Alagappan Muthu13-May-20232:09

Muzumdar: Prabhsimran has come through the grind of U-19 and U-23 cricket

A special century from Prabhsimran Singh knocked Delhi Capitals out of IPL 2023 and pushed Punjab Kings up to sixth place, well within reach of a playoff spot.In demanding batting conditions, the Punjab opener, who had begun the season with a highest IPL score of 16, found ways not just to survive but to keep scoring quick runs in a way nobody else managed to. It felt like a coming-of-age innings. How it startedWhen there is pace in the pitch, it’s easy to hit through the line and keep scoring runs steadily. When it is not there, it’s hard to even get the ball off the square. So you get your runs in fits and spurts.Kings suffered 22 balls for no runs in the powerplay, but hit seven others for 32 runs (5×4 and 2×6).A lot of this work was the result of Prabhsimran’s enterprise. His role in the team is to do whatever is necessary to maximise the field restrictions. And he performed admirably, switch-hitting spin for sixes and moving around all over the batting crease, just to throw the bowlers off their plans. But then his role changed. From being the guy who could not place any price on his wicket, he became the guy who simply could not get out. So he settled in. Got used to the pitch. And by around the 11th over or so, he was finding ways to hold his shape and exert complete control over his shots.Prabhsimran was 53 off 44. Then he was dropped on 68. Then he was 102 off 61.Prabhsimran Singh soaks in the applause as he walks back after his ton•BCCIThat’s 49 in 17 balls. On a pitch where none of his team-mates crossed 20, and only two others managed to score at better than run-a-ball. This was a spectacular display of perseverance, even if he did have a tiny bit of help.In conditions where the ball isn’t coming onto the bat, all you have to do is take pace off, hit a hard length and, most importantly, target the stumps. Do not let the batter free his arms.Prabhsimran though was basically invited to free his arms. According to ESPNcricinfo’s data, a majority of the balls he faced (33) were either outside off stump or worse, wide outside off stump. And he took 60 runs from them including seven fours and three sixes.Capitals should have known better. The chance they created – the catch that Rilee Roussouw dropped – was the result of a mis-hit to a ball that arrived in line with this body. They didn’t learn. And they were punished. How it endedCapitals had a great start to the chase. They came out knowing 168 was a tricky target, and that they had to knock off a significant portion of it within the powerplay. David Warner helped them accomplish that goal, taking them to 65 for 0 in six overs. He cruised to a 23-ball fifty, scoring 42 of those runs in boundaries. But the thing is, Capitals only faced six balls of spin in that period. It didn’t make sense why Kings would have let any of that happen on a pitch where the ball was both stopping on the batters and turning more than a fair bit.Eventually, Shikhar Dhawan turned to spin and the game changed.Cornered by Harpreet Brar (4 for 30) and Rahul Chahar (2 for 16), Capitals lost three wickets for two runs between the ninth and the 11th overs. ESPNcricinfo’s forecaster quantified this swing in momentum – in a mere eight balls, Kings went from a lowly 20% chance of winning this game to 78% favourites.By the end, Capitals needed seven players to combine just to reach the total they allowed one batter to get. These were not the conditions to give away a century.

Moeen Ali departs after leading Birmingham back to winning ways

Ashes-bound spinner takes 3 for 16 as Bears edge past Northants in low-scorer

Birmingham Bears returned to winning ways in the Vitality Blast with a 30-run victory over Northamptonshire Steelbacks in a low-scoring contest on a turning track at Edgbaston.Spinners dominated as the Bears, having chosen to bat, were bowled out for 137 in 18.5 overs after left-arm wristspinner Freddie Heldreich continued his excellent Blast campaign with a career-best 4 for 27. Heldreich took a wicket in each of his four overs as only Sam Hain (35 from 31 balls) and Alex Davies (32 from 18) passed 15 for the home side. The Steelbacks reply was then even more emphatically smothered – 107 for 9 from 20 overs – by the four-pronged home spin attack. Dan Mousley took 3 for 14 and Moeen Ali 3 for 16 to help his side to their first win in four attempts under his leadership before he now leaves to join England’s squad ahead of next week’s Ashes opener.Davies supplied the Bears with a punchy and, it was to prove, priceless start despite quickly losing two partners. Rob Yates lifted Tom Taylor to deep square leg and Moeen’s unproductive batting return to the Bears was completed when he skied David Willey to mid-off. The England player departs for Test duty on the back of 48 runs in four Blast knocks.Davies perished in pursuit of his third six when Saif Zaib took a well-judged catch on the rope in front of the Hollies Stand off Heldreich. That was the spinner’s fourth ball – he struck another big blow with his tenth which Glenn Maxwell, having hit the previous ball into the Hollies, chipped tamely to extra cover.Heldreich’s 17th delivery inflicted further damage when Mousley missed an attempted pull and fell lbw and when his 19th ousted Chris Benjamin, to another well-judged catch by Zaib at deep mid-wicket, the Bears were 93 for 6. As so often, the burden of responsibility fell on Hain and when he was bowled, making room to cut Zaib, a moderate total was assured. The Steelbacks found the going even tougher against the twirlers, notably Mousley who took two crucial wickets for eight in his first two overs. The 21-year-old bowled Chris Lynn and Josh Cobb either side of taking a fine catch in the deep to remove the dangerous Emilio Gay off Maxwell.Moeen then struck twice as Willey edged behind and Lewis McManus heaved to deep midwicket where the effervescent and ubiquitous Mousley took the catch. After ten overs, the Steelbacks had stuttered to 50 for 5 with 88 needed from the last ten.Scoring at that rate in such conditions was out of the question. Zaib and Taylor nurdled 29 from 30 balls but Mousley returned to the attack to have Taylor caught at extra cover and Danny Briggs hit James Sales’ middle stump to collect his 249th T20 wicket.A quest for 63 from the last five overs was hopeless. Zaib (25 from 29 balls) was bowled behind his legs sweeping at Moeen and the Steelbacks subsided swiftly under the shimmering mosaic of pinks, oranges and ochres in the dazzling iridescence of a Birmingham sunset.

Ashes omens everywhere you look as Steve Smith helps Sussex steal a march

Robinson bags Labuschagne as Neser serves reminder of qualities too

Ollie Robinson trapped Marnus Labuschagne lbw at Hove•Getty Images

Sussex 221 for 4 (Smith 68*, Haines 58, Coles 50*) lead Glamorgan 123 (Robinson 4-29) by 98 runsHow many pre-Ashes blows is it possible to land in one County Championship match? That is not merely a rhetorical question, given the number of international head-to-heads as Sussex took on Glamorgan at Hove. Ollie Robinson unequivocally landed the first of them, trapping Marnus Labuschagne lbw third ball as part a four-wicket haul, and the day ended with Steven Smith (for now Robinson’s team-mate) recording the first half-century of his three-game stint with Sussex.Does that somehow make it England 1-1 Australia? If only it were that simple… Michael Neser, the in-form allrounder who is pushing for a place in Australia’s Ashes party, also fell cheaply to Robinson, but then claimed two wickets and a catch to prevent Sussex from completely running away with the contest. One of his victims was Cheteshwar Pujara, who made the first duck of his Sussex career. Pujara is Smith’s captain here but will line up against Australia for India in next month’s World Test Championship final. Are you still following?Neser also bent his back trying to dislodge Smith for the Glamorgan cause. His first ball was left, his second blocked and third thrashed dismissively through cover for the first of Smith’s nine boundaries. As the day drew to a close, Labuschagne’s work-in-progress offbreaks were called upon in final attempt to ruffle Smith. Virtually everywhere you looked there was a potential Test match stramash.Accordingly, the air of excitement was palpable as 1500 fans took their places for the start of this match at the 1st Central County Ground – and not just because these two teams lie second and fourth in Division Two as we approach the midpoint of the season (yes, it’s true). The weather appears to have turned, The Sussex Cricketer has reopened – or at least been reincarnated beneath the development of flats on Eaton Road – and there are few finer places in the world to be than Hove on a sunny day.Temporary stands were in place, though not necessarily because of the weight of demand for tickets to see Smith bat in his only home appearance for Sussex. The T20 Blast starts in just over a week, by which time Sussex will hope to have made good on their first-day dominance over Glamorgan and risen to the top of the table – albeit having played a game more than fellow promotion-chasers Durham.Steven Smith works the ball to leg during his innings for Sussex•Getty Images

A poll on Sussex’s YouTube page suggested that most of those watching remotely, at least, were there for Smith, and they would have ended the day satisfied as the Australian produced an innings full of trademark leaves, trademark fidgets and trademark run-gathering. It was probably as fluent as Smith gets, full of the usual ticks and foibles, but probably not evidence in isolation that Sussex have significantly damaged England’s chances of regaining the urn.For encouragement on that front, English fans will look to Robinson’s 4 for 29, which followed a career-best 14-wicket haul at Worcester a couple of weeks ago. Robinson has confidently talked up England’s Ashes chances this summer – “I really feel like we could get one over on them, and give them a good hiding,” he said in March – and he delivered on the mind games in this advance skirmish. Labuschagne saw off two deliveries from Ari Karvelas, the first via a Smith-esque lightsabre leave, before facing up to Robinson, who rapped him peremptorily on the pads to send Australia’s Test No. 3 back to the Glamorgan dressing-room.Labuschagne lingered momentarily, perhaps replaying the delivery in his head, but it looked a straightforward call for umpire Rob White – the ball nibbling back and maybe staying a little low, going down the slope from the Cromwell Road End, as Robinson tore off in a manner that England fans will hope is to be replicated at Edgbaston in just over four weeks’ time.Trailing slightly towards the back of the celebratory huddle was Smith, who admitted on arrival that Robinson had knocked him over third ball in the nets and was perhaps just starting to cast his mind forward to the first Test – or at least to meeting up with Labuschagne for Australia’s training camp ahead of the WTC final at The Oval. The wicket of Labuschagne was Robinson’s sole success from his opening spell, but it struck at the heart of the Glamorgan batting. Karvelas had produced the first breakthrough, finding some extra bounce to clip the shoulder of Ed Byrom’s bat – Oli Carter holding on this time having dropped Byrom in Karvelas’ opening over – and Fynn Hudson-Prentice claimed a wicket with his third ball as Sam Northeast jabbed a thick outside edge to third slip.Robinson returned with Glamorgan five down and took only three balls to make it six, Kiran Carlson misjudging another nip-backer that travelled unimpeded into middle and off stumps. Neser fell in Robinson’s next over, pinned on front trying to work across the line, and the England man had a fourth shortly after when Timm van der Gugten was squared up and edged into the cordon. That dismissal meant Glamorgan, having been inserted on what looked a decent day for batting, had stumbled to 79 for 8 inside the morning session, Tom Haines chipping out the other two with his mediums. Zain-ul-Hassan, on first-class debut having been recruited by Glamorgan via the South Asian Cricket Academy, played tidily for 22 only to nick off playing forward – Carter grabbing the chance at second attempt – and Billy Root then left one that shaded back enough to clip off and dislodge the bails.Karvelas wrapped up the innings after lunch, Smith taking both catches, and Sussex then began their reply in a hurry as the opening pair put on 76 at more than a run a ball. Neser was twice cracked dismissively back down the ground by Ali Orr (more Ashes points-scoring?), who reached his highest score of the season before becoming the third batter on the day to be bowling leaving. Neser then pinned Tom Alsop and Pujara in front in successive overs, but Haines moved steadily to fifty in the company of Smith, a feat matched later by James Coles in the final over of the day.

Ange may have found the club’s next Bale in "frightening" Spurs star

They might not have had the trophies to show for it, but Tottenham Hotspur have been blessed with some incredible players over the last decade and a half.

For example, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were arguably the best strike partnership in the Premier League for large parts of the late 2010s, while the likes of Mousa Dembélé and Toby Alderweireld helped to make Mauricio Pochettino’s greatest team an absolute nightmare for opposition attackers.

However, in going back even further, you come to the utterly sensational Gareth Bale, who, in his pomp, had a claim to being the most dangerous attacker in the country.

The Welsh icon was a goalscoring force of nature for the Lilywhites, and in some ways, Ange Postecoglou might have his own version in the squad today.

Bale's Spurs career

Tottenham completed the £10m signing of Southampton’s 17-year-old Bale in May 2007, and while he was a highly-rated youngster tipped for greatness at the time, it took a while for that to happen in North London.

For example, early on in his Spurs career, the Cardiff-born dynamo suffered a ligament injury in his ankle, and when he returned to the fold around eight months later, nothing went right for him.

In fact, the then-full-back famously didn’t win his first game with the Lilywhites until the 25th attempt, and it became such a talking point that Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly told Harry Redknapp to drop him from the team because he was a bad-luck charm.

Gareth Bale for Tottenham.

The Englishman didn’t listen to the Manchester United boss, and on top of sticking by the young talent, he opted to move him up the pitch from left-back to left midfield and left-wing part way through the 09/10 campaign, which, as we all know today, was an inspired decision.

In all, the 35-year-old ended up scoring 55 goals and providing 50 assists in 203 appearances across his first stint with the club before adding another 16 goals and three assists in 34 games during the 20/21 campaign.

However, it was the 12/13 season that truly established the former Saints gem as a genuine world-class talent and secured his £85m move to Real Madrid, as in just 44 appearances, the 111-capped international scored 26 goals and provided ten assists, coming out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.22 games.

Overall, Bale has to go down as one of the best players Spurs have had in the modern era, and excitingly, they may have someone who can replicate some of his output in the squad today.

Tottenham Hotspur's new Bale

So, while this season has been something of a disaster for Postecoglou and Spurs, there are still several incredibly talented players within the squad.

The likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Djed Spend and Lucas Bergvall, for example, could all be key members of the next great Lilywhites team, but when it comes to their new Bale, it can be one man: Brennan Johnson.

The talented forward joined the club for around £47.5m from Nottingham Forest in September 2023, and before the pitchforks come out, we are not saying he is as talented or will ever be as talented as the multiple Champions League winner, but there are a couple of clear similarities.

Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson

The first is, as the Cardiff-born legend was, the 23-year-old is a key member of the Welsh national team and has already racked up 33 senior caps, in which he’s scored five goals and provided four assists.

The second reason is that the former Forest star also endured a slow start to life in N17, as while he didn’t need 25 appearances to pick up his first win, he didn’t score his second league goal for the club until matchweek 22 last season.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, after another slow start to this year, the “frightening” dynamo who can “make something happen,” as dubbed by podcaster and content creator HLTCO, has become a reliable source of goals and assists from the wing.

For example, in just 34 appearances this season, totalling 2211 minutes, the Nottingham-born ace has scored 14 goals and provided three assists, which comes to an average of a goal involvement every other game, or every 130.05 minutes.

Now, it seems incredibly unlikely that he will be able to match Bale’s sensational tally from the 12/13 campaign, but as things stand, we wouldn’t put it past the former Forest star to reach 20 goals in all competitions before May.

Ultimately, things might not have gone too well for Spurs this year, but in Johnson, it looks like they have an incredibly talented winger and someone who could reach another level next season should the players around him remain fit.

Farke makes teasing Leeds transfer claim after Burnley draw

The Whites remained top of the Championship following a 0-0 stalemate at Turf Moor against promotion rivals Burnley on Monday evening.

Daniel Farke’s side, like so many others, failed to get past the Clarets defence but did stretch their unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions.

Talking after the game, Farke said: “Good result for us, good point on the road. “Happy with the clean sheet, our defensive behaviour. Two of the best sides in the league, difficult game, difficult circumstances with the weather. They’re on a massive unbeaten run as well, especially at home. It was a game of few mistakes. Both teams were there without crucial mistakes, both teams were struggling to create enough chances.

“I’m pretty happy with how we controlled their processes without the ball. I wish we would have been a bit more confident and committed with the ball. Of course when a chance comes along you have to be a bit more on it. In the build-up and midfield play we were patient enough but the final decision, pass or finish could have been a bit more convincing or committed or better prepared. That’s the only thing I could criticise a little bit.”

The German also teased a potential transfer update for supporters ahead of this weekend’s Elland Road clash with Cardiff City.

Leeds and the 49ers Enterprises are yet to make a January signing, with rivals Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland all adding to their squads or the second half of the campaign.

Some late activity could be on the cards for the Whites, though, with an approach made for a new transfer target.

Leeds make enquiry for Matt Targett

According to The Athletic, relayed by MOT Leeds News, Leeds have made a late enquiry to Newcastle United over a potential transfer for Matt Targett.

The left-back, who cost the Magpies a total of £15m from Aston Villa, could be on the move from St James’ Park before the February 3 deadline, and Leeds are seemingly keen.

The 29-year-old has also represented Fulham and Southampton alongside Villa and Newcastle, winning 1-0 at Elland Road with Villa in 2021.

He’s played just 80 minutes of senior football under Eddie Howe this season, so an exit appears to make sense for all involved. Leeds have Junior Firpo and Sam Byram as left-back options, but with both out of contract at the end of the season, Targett could be a shrewd option.

As per Football Transfers, former Leeds youngster Archie Gray, who moved to Tottenham last summer after starring at full-back, has been named as a player similar to Targett, and it looks as if a late move to Elland Road is one to keep an eye on.
