Paul Walter leads Essex charge to victory at Cardiff

Visitors post second-highest T20 total at Sophia Gardens to leave Glamorgan well short

ECB Reporters Network09-Jun-2023A career-best 78 from Paul Walter set up a 51-run victory as Essex set an impressive 226 for 9 in their Vitality Blast match against Glamorgan in Cardiff. The total was the second-highest ever made at Sophia Gardens with only the Surrey total made here on Wednesday above the Essex effort in this match.Essex lost wickets regularly but kept on coming at the Glamorgan bowlers. The innings had just one stand of more than 50 runs but there were important contributions throughout.Glamorgan started well in their chase but fell away as they looked to keep up with the rate. Colin Ingram top scored with 48 but no Glamorgan batter made a half-century as they were bowled out for 175 with Peter Hatzoglou unable to bat. This is Glamorgan’s second home defeat in a row to leave them with a record of four wins and three losses. Essex now go ahead of Glamorgan in the table with five wins and two defeats.Essex got off to a flying start having won the toss and elected to bat. After the first five overs they had reached 67 for 1 with Timm van der Gugten’s return from injury greeted by the Essex batters smashing him around the park. Van der Gugten’s first two overs went for 38 runs as Robin Das, Feroze Khushi and Michael Pepper all took the attack to Glamorgan. It looked as if Essex could have a truly remarkable score at the end of their six over Powerplay, but the last over of the fielding restrictions from Ruaidhri Smith was a double-wicket maiden. Smith had Khushi dismissed when he drilled a ball hard and low to Colin Ingram at mid-on and claimed a second wicket from the last ball of the Powerplay when he had Josh Rymel caught at point.Walter was the next man in and he, along with Pepper, continued to attack, with the rate rarely dropping below 10 an over throughout the Essex innings. Pepper made 42 from just 19 balls when he was trapped lbw by Hatzoglou. It was Walter who was the star as he made the highest score for Essex, 78 from 34 balls that contained six sixes. He was dismissed when he drove a ball from Hatzoglou to long-off and Ingram took a simple catch.Despite the regular wickets, Essex still kept coming hard and their lower order, led by Daniel Sams, took them well past 200 to give Glamorgan a target that would be a record chase on this ground.Glamorgan began their pursuit of the 227-run victory target with a very impressive performance inside the Powerplay. Kiran Carlson and Sam Northeast took the score to 65 without loss inside the first six overs and shared a stand of 76 before Carlson was well caught off the bowling of Matt Critchley for 40 from 18 balls.Northeast followed up his 76 against Surrey on Wednesday with a well-made 46 in this match before he also fell to Critchley, bowled while using his feet to get down the track. That wicket brought together Glamorgan’s in-form pairing of Ingram and Chris Cooke. The issue was the same as in the game against Surrey, they needed something record-breaking to get their team over the line. With 118 needed from just 53 balls when their partnership began Glamorgan needed one of these two to be batting at the end of the match. As it was they both made decent starts but failed to kick on.Ingram was caught on the boundary by Critchley off the bowling of Snater for 46 and Cooke was caught and bowled by Walter. When Billy Root was dismissed the next ball, also caught and bowled by Walter, Glamorgan were five down and needed to score at 16 runs an over.Wickets tumbled at the end to leave Glamorgan a long way short of their victory target as they went from 158 for 3 to 175 all out. And with Hatzoglou not coming out to bat it seems if their extensive injury list has got longer.

It's not Isak: Chelsea now racing to sign "outstanding" £100m EPL striker

Chelsea are now involved in a four-way transfer race to sign a “outstanding” Premier League striker, with Enzo Maresca keen to bring in a forward capable of challenging for Nicolas Jackson’s starting spot, according to a report.

Blues stepping up striker pursuit

The Blues have been left short on options at striker over the past few weeks, with Jackson and Marc Guiu both sidelined due to injuries, which has meant Pedro Neto has been given the nod in the unfamiliar role of centre-forward.

As such, Maresca has now started to step up his pursuit of a new striker ahead of the summer transfer window, and there is believed to be strong interest in Lille striker Jonathan David, who will be available on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

Strasbourg’s Emanuel Emegha is one of the lesser-known targets, and the west Londoners’ relationship with the French club could give them the edge in negotiations for the striker, who is also wanted by Everton, West Ham United and Aston Villa.

Newcastle Unitred’s Alexander Isak, on the other hand, is one of the most sought-after strikers in world football, and Chelsea are expected to enter talks to sign the Sweden international, who could command a fee of £120m.

However, Isak is not the only Premier League striker on the shortlist, with a report from The Boot Room revealing the Blues are now keen on signing Brighton & Hove Albion’s Joao Pedro.

Pedro could be brought in to challenge for Jackson’s starting spot, but he will not come cheap, with reports from elsewhere stating Brighton value the Brazilian at £100m.

There may also be fierce competition from within the Premier League, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United said to be keen on a deal.

"Outstanding" Pedro starring for Brighton

The 23-year-old is Brighton’s top scorer this season, netting eight goals in 23 appearances in the Premier League, during which time he has also displayed his ability to set up his teammates, providing six assists.

Creating chances is one of the Brazil international’s finest qualities, and he ranks very highly on a number of other key attacking metrics over the past year compared to his positional peers.

Having also been lauded as “outstanding” by analyst Chris Kearney, the Brighton star is clearly a top forward, but the only concern will be the fact he is not exactly the most prolific in front of goal.

Pedro places in just the 19th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90, given that he clearly thrives in other aspects of the game, so it may be unwise for Chelsea to shell out £100m on a striker who does not guarantee goals.

Two goals within a 60-second span for AC Milan helped them to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Genoa on a rainy Monday evening in Serie A action. Mexico international Santiago Gimenez recorded an assist on the opening strike, scored by Rafael Leao in the 76th minute, who responded nearly instantly with an assist himself to force an own-goal less than one minute later.

U.S. international Christian Pulisic started the match and played 77 minutes, until USMNT compatriot Yunus Musah replaced him to close out the contest.

With the three points, the moved up to 57 points on the season, and trail sixth-placed Lazio by just six points with three Serie A matches remaining.

With a constant pour of rain all evening, the left it late, but secured all three points for their third-straight match across all competitions. Pulisic, in his time on the pitch, completed 92 percent of his passes, while being one of their primary attacking threats all evening long.

He created two attacking chances, registering one shot on target. He registered 51 total touches on the ball, with six of them coming in the opposition's box. His total xG on the day was .52.

Musah, meanwhile, made his first appearance for Milan in a month, with his last showing coming on April 5.

The take on Bologna on Friday in Serie A action as they search for their fourth-straight win across all competitions.

'He's not developing anymore, he's the guy' – Even as expectations rise, USMNT's Diego Luna keeps surpassing them at Real Salt Lake

The USMNT midfielder has found the spotlight for RSL, and he continues to shine with goals and assists for the MLS club

Pablo Mastroeni isn't easily impressed, and he doesn't cut slack even to those who do catch his eye. There's no superstar treatment at Real Salt Lake, no leeway. The expectations are laid down for everyone equally, from the highest-paid player to newcomers.

Praise from Mastroeni doesn't come cheaply; it has to be earned – and not just by goals or assists, and definitely not with fancy flicks or highlight-reel skills. Effort, energy, commitment – these are the currencies that buy smiles from Mastroeni.

It's what makes what the RSL boss says about Diego Luna all the more pertinent. Fans and pundits have labeled Luna a rising star, one who could make a huge impact both in MLS and with the U.S. men's national team. You can count Mastroeni among the believers, as well.

“I don't think we can talk about Diego developing anymore. He's the guy," Mastroeni told reporters after Luna's two-goal performance in RSL's win over San Diego FC. "He's the guy that plays with the chip on his shoulder. He's one of our best defenders. He's obviously the guy that's putting the ball in the back of the net. He's doing it all for our group."

For those who have followed Luna, his white-hot start to the MLS season isn't a surprise. His breakout, in truth, happened last season, when he won MLS' Young Player of the Year award before riding that wave right into a USMNT opportunity. Luna hasn't looked back. His game has continued to advance.

"For me, it doesn't change what I'm doing on the daily or what I'm trying to do for myself and the career I'm trying to build for myself," Luna said of Mastroeni's praise. "He's my coach, so, of course, he's up there, right? But it's just like anyone else talking or anyone else saying something."

Luna may not be changing, but the expectations and perceptions of him sure are as he continues to shine. If he's already become "the guy," how far can Luna really go from here?

  • Getty Images

    The breakout

The midfield wizard affectionately known as "Moon Boy" made his Real Salt Lake debut in 2022. He scored seven goals in all competitions in 2023. But 2024? That was a different type of year. That was the definition of a breakout season.

By the end, Luna had helped lead RSL to the postseason behind eight goals and 12 assists, earning himself Young Player of the Year and MLS All-Star recognition. Luna hadn't just established himself as a top young player in MLS; he'd quickly become one of the top players in general. Few players in the league were creating at his level and, in his mind, he was just getting started.

"A lot of people outside or in the media, they made this year seem like an amazing year for me, and that I was unreal," he told GOAL.. "There's so much more than I can do. I believe that this was average for myself. This is the baseline. I think that I should be scoring 10 goals a season easily. That's the type of standard that I have for myself.

"I need to be better this year, and there were a lot of moments where I could have been better, and that's what I'm striving for. That's the type of mentality that I have, because it's not good enough. I always want more. I always want more goals, more assists."

It's all translated to the USMNT, too. Luna famously earned a "big balls" compliment for Mauricio Pochettino in January after providing an assist as blood poured down from his broken nose. He stepped back into the spotlight during the team's CONCACAF Nations League run, setting up Patrick Agyemang for a goal in the third-place game against Canada.

Many of the USMNT's top stars were criticized for a perceived lack of effort and energy in those two matches. Not Luna, though. His effort and skillset were on full display.

"That's just my style of play, right?" Luna told GOALafter the match. "I like to be creative. That's what's gotten me here. I'm not the tallest, not the fastest, not the strongest, right, but it's the creativity and the risk-taking that's gotten me here."

The 21-year-old's creativity remains on full display in MLS, where he's established himself as an MVP contender early on in the season.

    Taking responsibility at RSL

Heading into this 2025 MLS season, Luna knew all eyes would be on him, and it's not just because of his achievements last campaign. RSL's roster decisions sent a clear message: Luna was going to be the focal point this season.

Striker Chicho Arango was sent to San Jose, which meant RSL was losing one of the league's more consistent goalscorers. Winger Andrerson Julio was gone, too, as he was traded to FC Dallas. The club, meanwhile, pursued striker Robert Bozenik right up until the deadline, only to see that fall through due to reasons outside of their control. In the end, the club ended up bringing in a pair of veterans, Willy Agada and Johnny Russell, to help to fill the gaps.

Even before transfer season really got going, though, Luna admitted there were new pressures on him.

"You don't sugarcoat these things," Luna told GOAL. "Like there is pressure there, that's what it is, that's how life is, that's what this job is. For me, it's exciting, it's something that you like. That's the type of sh*t that I want. I want to be this guy that people are relying on and make them know they're right."

Luna's response has been just about perfect.

Even with that Nations League trip in the middle of it all, Luna already has five goals and two assists in the first nine games of the MLS season. The goals have come in bunches, too, as he scored twice each in wins over San Diego and the LA Galaxy. In total, Luna has contributed to seven of his club's 11 goals on the season, showing just how influential he is as a creative force.

It's not just goals and assists, though. There's more to Luna's breakout.

    The little things

Luna is a No. 10 at heart. He loves creating and making things happen. He loves the feeling of doing something wild, something that makes fans get out of their seats.

But, early on in his young career, he realized that the role of a No. 10 has changed. In many ways, players in that position also need to be the first line of defense. They need to be willing to do the work that everyone else around them does, too.

"It makes the team stronger mentally because it just allows everybody to trust each other," Luna said, "and it gives trust in me and gets me the ball, more people are enjoying playing with me more. It's a bunch of things."

Luna's defensive work and, as importantly, overall effort is what has earned the praise from his coaches.

"The hunger that he shows is what we want," Pochettino said after Nations League, "and that's not to say anything against the rest of the players. It's just an example. When I told him that he was going to play, he was ready. Whether you're playing well or not well, scoring, assisting or not, that is what we want to see. That is the example that we need to take."

That praise has been echoed by Mastroeni, who continues to drive home the point that Luna is doing more than just assisting.

"I think what Diego has been able to do year after year has been to really dig deep and continue to reinvent himself," Mastroeni told FOX13. "He came here as a really technical player; now he's very much a cerebral player with a lot of bite. These players are rare, especially when you have the type of play that Diego has. I couldn't be more proud of his growth and his commitment to his craft. The sky is the ceiling for him."

    Looking ahead

Luna's life is already starting to change. The "Moon Boy" label has been shed as fans are now calling him "Moon Man", illustrating how much he's grown. Off the field, the recognition is coming, as are the opportunities. Luna recently met both Travis Scott and, some would say, the other Diego Luna, star of the Star Wars series Andor. With success comes attention, and the attention of American soccer is all on Luna right now.

Those overseas would be mistaken to not keep their eye on him, too. European clubs are surely taking notice, but Luna doesn't really care about any of that at the moment.

“For me, it’s all just talks and whatever. I always tell my agents and people around me that I don’t want to hear anything about what’s going on unless I have to make a decision,” Luna told . “Unless it’s something where it’s right there, at that moment and we need to look in this deep, I try to tell them to keep that stuff away from me because it’s all just talk and, as you know there’s people that talk good, talk bad and it’s everywhere so I kinda like to stay away from that.

“ I think for me it’s just naturally just chilling, playing soccer and working hard, providing for my family and whatever comes from that and whatever comes from performing, we’ll talk about it.”

A World Cup is around the corner. A Gold Cup is coming before that. There are big games and big moments ahead for RSL, too, as the club counts on Luna to be, again, "the guy" for their team. It's a role that Luna is settling into perfectly as he continues to seize opportunity after opportunity.

Steven Smith: 'Best I've felt in about six years'

A buoyant Steven Smith has proudly announced his superb one-day innings against England was the best he has felt batting in six years. The bold claim from one of the country’s greatest batters will strike fear into West Indies and South Africa ahead of the Australian Test summer.Smith belted an unbeaten 80 from 78 balls at Adelaide Oval on Thursday to help Australia secure a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against world champions England.”[It] was probably the best I’ve felt in about six years,” Smith told reporters. “I was just in really nice positions and I felt really good, I honestly haven’t felt that way in six years or so. It’s been nice to score some runs in that time and we’re always looking for perfection, and for me yesterday was as close to perfection as I will get.”Smith credits a year-long process to help rediscover his best stance and technique which now sees him not taking the pronounced jump across the crease and staying more side-on to the ball.He scored a century in his previous ODI innings, against New Zealand in September, but said that his latest effort felt a world away.”[It was] much better yesterday,” he said. “In Cairns on a slow wicket I still felt a little bit rushed and wasn’t quite happy with the positions I was getting in whereas yesterday I just felt, a couple of the cover drives I hit, I know I’m batting really well when I’ve got my weight going through the ball.”Smith was left out of all but one game during the recent T20 World Cup campaign but in ODI cricket has been able to retain a remarkable record. Since returning from his ban at the 2019 ODI World Cup, he has averaged 54.84 in ODIs, which goes up to an even more impressive 66.13 since the start of 2020.The six-year timeframe mentioned by Smith since he last felt so good at the crease includes his remarkable 2019 Ashes in England where he averaged 110.57. And over the last six years, since 2016, he has averaged 61.77. However, for his lofty standards, Smith has experienced a lean period in the Test arena with just two centuries since the 2019 Ashes.”I’ve been working on a few things, it’s almost been a six-month or 12-month process,” Smith said. “The start of last summer, I tried to get my hands back to where they were in 2015.”I feel like I’m staying a bit more side-on now and I’ve got my feet and hands in sync together. [Thursday] was probably the first time I’ve actually had extended time in the middle with that change.”It’s hard to base something on one innings but it felt as though things clicked for me like they did at the WACA in 2013. Hopefully it’s the start of a big summer.”Smith is averaging 60.00 from 87 Tests with 28 centuries ahead of a jam-packed 12 months for Australian cricket. After two Tests against West Indies and a three-match series with South Africa, Australia will head to India in February to battle for the Border-Gavaskar trophy. If they gain enough points in those series there will be a World Test Championship final in early June before the Ashes series in England.

England, South Africa meet with one eye on fine-tuning T20 World Cup plans

Big picture

Right, we are on to the stuff that matters. After an ODI series that not even the weather wanted to be completed, we are entering the T20I season with all eyes on the World Cup. England have a whopping 13 fixtures before the tournament; South Africa have only eight matches, the bulk of which are in the next ten days, and without regular captain Temba Bavuma. You may think that puts England in a more stable place to prepare from, but they are at the tail-end of 12 white-ball matches in 24 days and will have to be careful to avoid flagging at the end, especially as they have only just entered a new white-ball era. These T20Is are Matthew Mott and Jos Buttler’s final opportunity to win a white-ball series at home after they lost both rubbers against India, and shared the spoils in the ODIs against South Africa.Even if the results don’t matter “Things do get a little bit crazy and frantic out there, but it’s just about having your clear plans and staying as calm as possible.”

Imagine him & Cunha: Wolves have easy chance to sign “magnificent” PL star

Vitor Pereira’s honeymoon period as Wolverhampton Wanderers boss came to a crashing halt last time out versus Nottingham Forest, as Nuno Espirito Santo humbled his former employers 3-0 at Molineux.

Now, it’s a Saturday midday trip for the Old Gold in the FA Cup away at Bristol City, with Pereira praying that a minor cup upset isn’t on the cards and that his Wolves side get back to their best versus the Robins.

Wolverhampton Wanderers managerVitorPereirareacts after the match

Between now and that weekend trip down to Ashton Gate, however, more transfer rumours will no doubt appear, with Wolves allegedly offered this seasoned Premier League performer recently.

Wolves offered chance to sign £60k p/w star

As per a recent report by Caught Offside, Newcastle United are offering out on-the-fringes attacker Miguel Almiron this January to a whole host of Premier League suitors.

Wolves are just one of those clubs named in the report, with both Leicester City and Crystal Palace also keen on adding the Paraguayan to their ranks at some point this hectic month.

Newcastle United's MiguelAlmironbefore the match

A bid in and around £21m mark could be enough for any of those suitors to win their desired man, with Almiron no longer front and centre of Eddie Howe’s Magpies, despite once being a relied-upon option week in week out for the in-form Toon.

Pereira would surely love to add the £60k-per-week man to his Old Gold group, therefore, with the potential there for the experienced 30-year-old to strike up a lethal partnership with Matheus Cunha in attacking midfield to steer his new side away from relegation danger.

Matheus Cunha

What Almiron could offer Wolves

It was clear for all to see last time that Wolves lacked a creative spark against Forest from the attacking midfield spots – owing to Cunha being out with a suspension – with Goncalo Guedes in particular sticking out as below-par with zero successful dribbles tallied up on top of zero duels being won from seven attempted.

Therefore, it will be easy for the Brazilian to come straight back into the first-team fold and re-establish himself as Wolves’ biggest asset going forward, having picked up a ridiculous 14 goal contributions from 19 top-flight outings this season to date.

He could soon be joined in those attacking midfield positions by Almiron if everything slots into place, with Hwang Hee-Chan not exactly covering himself in glory either come the full-time whistle against Forest, as the South Korean failed to hit a single on-target effort at the opposition goal.

Consequently, the wantaway Magpies star might forcibly remove Hwang from the side, with the 5 foot 9 ace proving across various different campaigns at St James’ Park that he has what it takes to perform at an elite level.

The obvious standout season – when looking at the numbers above – is of course Almiron’s fruitful 2021/22, where he bagged 11 goals from 34 Premier League games, with Hwang helping himself to just one more last campaign despite often playing as an out-and-out centre-forward.

Moreover, the Old Gold target can even brag that he has scored in the Champions League for his side across his long-standing stay on Tyneside, with this instinctive effort getting his team up and running against Paris St. Germain last year.

Labelled as “magnificent” just last summer by Howe for the passion and the skills he can gift his employers, it would be a sad cutting of the ties if the Paraguayan was to leave for Molineux.

But, Newcastle’s loss would be Wolves’ immense gain, with Cunha and Almiron perhaps forming a feared duo in attack to steer Pereira’s men clear of relegation.

Tottenham now exploring January move for England int’l to replace Forster

Tottenham Hotspur are now exploring a move for a “superb” Premier League ace to replace Fraser Forster, according to a report.

Fraser Forster failing to impress

After Guglielmo Vicario was ruled out with a long-term injury back in November, Ange Postecoglou made it clear in no uncertain terms that he had no plans to sign a goalkeeper during the January transfer window.

However, it would be fair to say that Fraser Forster has flattered to deceive in Vicario’s absence, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher highly critical of the goalkeeper after his performance in the 4-3 EFL Cup victory against Manchester United, saying: “Has there been a worse performance from two goalkeepers in the same game ever?”

As such, it appears as though Postecoglou has made a U-turn and will now look to bring in a new goalkeeper to replace Forster this January, and The Boot Room have now provided an update on one of the players Tottenham could target.

According to a report, Spurs are now interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Sam Johnstone this month, given that Forster’s introduction to the team has coincided with some poor results.

The Lilywhites are now exploring a loan deal for the Wolves goalkeeper, who is expected to be allowed to leave Molineux this month, given that Jose Sa has emerged as the Old Gold’s number one this season.

The opportunity to sign the 31-year-old, who was wanted by Antonio Conte in 2022, on an initial loan deal appeals to Tottenham, seemingly as a stop-gap until Vicario returns from his ankle injury.

Paul O Keefe has since reported that Johnstone is “one of the leading contenders” to strengthen the goalkeeper area this winter.

Johnstone also struggling between the sticks

In truth, both players have not been at their best over the past year, ranking in very low percentiles across a number of key metrics for goalkeepers.

As shown, Forster is performing slightly better across the three statistics, although it must be taken into account that he has played for a stronger team, who are expected to dominate certain games and therefore face fewer shots.

There is no doubt that Johnstone is talented, given his previous involvement with the England squad, winning four caps, and he has been lauded as “superb” by members of the media.

However, there is little evidence that the Englishman would be much of an upgrade on Forster for Tottenham in the second half of the season, so it may be worth Postecoglou looking at other targets.
