Manchester Utd: Fabrizio Romano reveals Martin Dubravka agreement

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

The Lowdown: Antony in the building

The Red Devils are finally making inroads in the transfer window late on, with Ajax’s Brazilian winger Antony set to follow countryman Casemiro to Old Trafford.

United have agreed on an £85m deal to sign the forward, who is already at Carrington after footage leaked on social media. The 22-year-old looks like he’ll become the club’s fifth summer signing, and a sixth isn’t far off either, seemingly.

The Latest: Dubravka next…

Fabrizio Romano revealed on Twitter in the last 24 hours that United have reached a “full agreement” with Newcastle for Dubravka.

The transfer expert stated that the goalkeeper will join on an initial loan deal with a £5m option to buy next summer, with the Slovakian set to undergo a medical today.

The Verdict: Needed

Although a move for Dubravka might not get United fans as excited compared to a mega-money deal for Antony, it still appears to be a shrewd piece of business.

The 33-year-old, who has been labelled as ‘top class’ by journalist Josh Bunting and dubbed a leader by The Chronicle’s Mick Quinn, has plenty of Premier League experience under his belt during his four-year stay at St James’ Park.

Therefore, he should provide adequate cover for David de Gea, with Erik ten Hag’s side also having Europa League football in their schedule this season.

Failing to bring in another goalkeeper would have left Tom Heaton as the only senior alternative to De Gea, so this transfer is definitely needed.

Spurs have talks scheduled for player exit

Tottenham Hotspur have scheduled a new round of talks with Valencia over the sale of winger Bryan Gil, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown

After a busy summer in the transfer market, managing director Fabio Paratici is now looking to offload players who are excess to Antonio Conte’s requirements.

The likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Joe Rodon have all left the club on loan, whilst Steven Bergwijn and Cameron Carter-Vickers also sealed their permanent exits from Hotspur Way earlier in the summer.

Elsewhere, attention has now turned to Gil, who has been receiving interest after spending the second half of last season on loan in La Liga.

The Latest

Romano has shared an update on the Spaniard’s position at the club, revealing details of a possible move away from north London.

Taking to Twitter, the reliable journalist claimed: “Tottenham and Valencia have new round of talks now scheduled for Bryan Gil deal. Negotiations in progress as all parties want to get the deal done next week. #THFC”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict

Having arrived at Spurs last summer in a deal worth £21.6m, with Erik Lamela heading the other way to Sevilla, the 21-year-old has failed to establish himself as a core member of the Tottenham first-team.

The Spain under-21 international has played just 20 games for the Lilywhites, only nine of which have come in the Premier League (all off the bench), totalling a meagre 85 minutes in the division.

Having made 17 appearances for Valencia during his short stint at the club, a return to Spain seems to be in the best interests for the youngster, who has been dubbed a ‘very exciting’ player by ESPN editor David Cartlidge, as he has a lot of potential to fulfil.

Therefore, with game-time looking scarce under Conte (he’s yet to feature this term), this could be the ideal scenario for Gil’s career.

Cody Gakpo can be Arsenal’s next Henry

Arsenal have received an update on mooted transfer target Cody Gakpo this week…

What’s the word?

According to Italian transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Eredivisie outfit PSV Eindhoven are looking for around €40-45m (£33-37.5m) to let the Dutch winger leave during what remains of the summer transfer window.

“At the moment, despite some speculation involving Arsenal, the situation is quiet around Cody Gakpo,” he told CaughtOffside.

“He has always been on the list for Leeds United, but not in the first position, just after Luis Sinisterra, who was a priority of the club.

“PSV Eindhoven are hoping to keep him and his price tag has always been around €40-45m (around £33.5m to £38m).

“He may be a name to monitor in the coming weeks as a big opportunity for many clubs.”

Arsenal’s next Thierry Henry

After missing out on moves for Raphinha, who opted for a dream transfer to FC Barcelona, and former youngster Serge Gnabry, who signed a contract extension at Bayern Munich, Gakpo could emerge as a viable option for technical director Edu Gaspar and co.

Primarily a left winger, the 23-year-old gem is capable of playing anywhere across the frontline, having also played on the right flank, as a centre-forward and as a no.10, as per Transfermarkt.

Last season was a breakthrough season for Gakpo as he delivered a whopping 21 goals and 15 assists across 46 appearances, even captaining the side on several occasions.

Reports in the past suggest that the Gunners may well see the PSV man as a potential option up top but his versatility opens up substantial depth to manager Mikel Arteta.

He could even look to repeat Arsene Wenger’s masterclass with Thierry Henry, who started out on the wing before becoming one of the Premier League’s most lethal marksmen.

In fact, the Arsenal legend was a player that gave Gakpo inspiration early on in his career. “Everybody wants to play one time in the Prem. I don’t favour one team but I like Arsenal a lot,” he once told The Sun. “I looked up to Henry when I was younger because he was a tall guy who played on the wing.”

Also compared to Tottenham Hotspur sensation Heung-min Son, it’s clear that Gakpo is a presence that could add plenty of goal contributions to the Gunners’ squad, wherever he plays along the frontline.

The 6 foot 2 dynamo, dubbed “special” and “phenomenal” by scout Jacek Kulig, must be targeted by Edu and Arteta heading into the final month of the window.

A deal worth around £38m could be a worthwhile investment indeed.

Wolves given green light for Gini Wijnaldum

Wolves were linked with signing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum earlier in the summer transfer window, and it seems as if Bruno Lage has now been given the green light to swoop for the former Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder.

What’s the word?

The Old Gold were among a host of Premier League clubs linked with signing the Netherlands international, who looks to be surplus to requirements in Paris after just one season with the Ligue 1 champions.

His time with Les Parisiens almost certainly seems to be up, as it was confirmed on Friday that he has been left out of their squad for the pre-season visit to Japan, as there is a strong belief that he will be moved on.

It was also reported on Saturday morning that the 31-year-old is being offered out by his current club, with AC Milan one potential destination for the Dutchman.

Lage would love him

If Wolves could bring in a player of Wijnaldum’s quality this summer, they would undoubtedly look a lot better in midfield next season.

The Old Gold have only made one new signing so far this summer, as Nathan Collins joined from Burnley, and supporters will surely be desperate for further additions ahead of their season opener against Leeds United in a few weeks’ time.

Wijnaldum proved himself to be a top player during his time in England, making 217 appearances in the Premier League with Liverpool and Newcastle, in which he contributed 27 goals and 16 assists.

The Dutchman was a big part of Jurgen Klopp’s team’s success in recent years, with his memorable brace from the bench instrumental in the Reds’ famous 4-0 comeback win against Barcelona in the Champions League in 2019.

While Lage has a lot of quality in his Wolves midfield, with Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho looking likely to line up alongside each other again next season, neither of the Portuguese maestros offer the same goal threat as Wijnaldum, who could add more potency to the Old Gold’s midfield. That would be very much appreciated by supporters, given Wolves’ struggles in front of goal over the last two seasons.

Therefore, given that the experienced Dutch midfielder now seems available for transfer, Wolves should act upon their apparent interest and bring him to Molineux, as he is surely the sort of player that Lage would love to have in his ranks.

Newcastle plot Broja & Diaby masterplan

Newcastle United have a plan in place to complete the exciting double signing of both Armando Broja and Moussa Diaby, reports The Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson.

The Lowdown: Diaby and Broja links

The chase for Diaby has been fairly well documented in recent weeks, with the Magpies identifying the Bayer Leverkusen winger as their number one target to reinforce the wide attacking position in Eddie Howe’s squad.

Broja has popped up as a target more recently after the Albania starlet was left out of Chelsea’s pre-season squad, with reports in recent days detailing interest from Tyneside, Everton and West Ham.

According to Wilson, Dan Ashworth and Co. have now set up a clever plan to secure both signings.

The Latest: Ashworth’s masterplan

The reporter writes on Twitter that ‘Newcastle want’ to secure a loan-to-buy deal for Broja, thus saving funds to put towards a deal for Diaby.

The France international is valued at £54m by Transfermarkt, has three years left on his contract at the BayArena and has Champions League football on offer with his current employers, so it’s fair to say Ashworth will need every penny he can get from the Magpies hierarchy in order to get a deal done.

According to Wilson, Newcastle are prepared to pay Chelsea’s loan demands in order to ‘divert more financial resources’ and lock up Diaby on a permanent deal.

The Verdict: Perfection

While there was plenty of excitement surrounding the arrival of Sven Botman, it’s fair to say this would be Ashworth’s finest work yet. Diaby ranked in the 91st percentile for non-penalty goals amongst attacking midfielders/wingers in Europe’s top five leagues last season, also hitting the 94th percentile for assists (FBRef).

Dubbed an ‘amazing player’ by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, the Frenchman would add the end product that his compatriot Allan Saint-Maximin has often lacked from the wing.

Broja meanwhile managed nine goals on loan at Southampton last term, a smart return for a player in his first full Premier League campaign, drawing praise for his ‘incredible pace and strength’ from Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp.

Valued at nearly £20m by Transfermarkt, signing the Blues starlet permanently now would take a massive chunk out of the transfer kitty, so a loan-to-buy deal, delaying the big payments until 2023, could be seen as a true master-class from Ashworth and the owners.

Rangers eyeing Tyrhys Dolan

An update has emerged on Rangers and their attempts to bolster their squad at Ibrox in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

talkSPORT reporter Geoff Peters has revealed that Rangers are one of the clubs in the race to land a talent from south of the border in the market.

Ross Wilson is plotting a swoop for the English attacker and will need to pay up to £3m to bring him to Glasgow in the coming weeks.

Peters Tweeted: “Blackburn’s highly rated Tyrhys Dolan is attracting serious interest north and south of the border. Celtic and Rangers are both keen as are newly promoted Nottingham Forest. The England Under 20 striker has two years left on his #brfc contract. Fee could be around £2m-£3m.”

Ianis Hagi 2.0

By securing a deal to sign Dolan from Rovers, Wilson can land the new Ianis Hagi for the Light Blues in the sense that he is a talented, young, attacking midfielder who can be developed in the coming years

Like the Romanian, he is often deployed out wide on the right but is also capable of playing through the middle. This means that Gio van Bronckhorst can use him in a multitude of ways; playing on the right of a front three, as a number 10, as a striker in a 3-5-2, and in any other ways he can think of to utilise the gem’s talents.

In the 2021/22 campaign, Dolan managed four goals and three assists in 20 starts. This is a solid base for the 20-year-old to build from as he has plenty of room to add consistency to his end product, given that he is at the start of his career.

His former boss Tony Mowbray previously said he is “like a wasp” and lauded his attitude earlier this year, saying: “Tyrhys Dolan is a shining beacon for any kid who’s released from any football club. When he gets left out he works even harder on the training ground. He doesn’t sulk, he just gets to work on the grass.”

This shows that he will put the work in to improve and hone his skills to help him fulfil his potential. He will, therefore, be an investment for the future as he can develop over time and grow in influence on the pitch by scoring and assisting more goals.

The young talent has shown signs of promise in the Championship and can now explode with regular minutes in Scotland. Therefore, much like Hagi – 23 – is, Dolan would be a player van Bronckhorst can work with on the training pitch to turn him into a crucial player for the Gers.

Sunderland set for Nathan Broadhead talks

A major Sunderland update has emerged regarding their interest in Nathan Broadhead heading into the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Kristjaan Speakman has confirmed that the Wearsiders will be holding talks with the 24-year-old’s parent club Everton with a view to bringing him back for another spell at the Stadium of Light, after spending the 2021/22 campaign on loan from the Premier League outfit.

The Black Cats chief told The Northern Echo: “We will have a conversation with Everton this week, to see where they are at with it and where we are at with it, and see if that’s aligned.

“We have to respect the fact that he is an Everton player. We have seen him as our player for the year, because we had to get the best out of him but now that the season is finished he unfortunately goes back to being an Everton player.”

Alex Neil will be excited

The Sunderland head coach will surely be left feeling excited by these quotes from Speakman, as Broadhead returning next season would be a huge boost for the 40-year-old.

The Welsh attacker was lethal in front of goal in the 2021/22 League One campaign as he produced an eye-catching 10 goals in 15 starts for the club. He averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.91, remaining consistent with his performances whenever he was available during an injury-hit time on Wearside, which illustrates the big impact he had when he was on the pitch.

The youngster has also been backed to step up to the mark in the second tier as Speakman said: “Look, he’s had some incredible moments and he’s been an inspiration in many respects in terms of some of the goals he’s scored. It has been harder for him of late because of injury but you can’t take away from the fact that he has got all the attributes to go and play at Championship level.”

Neil will therefore be excited by the prospect of working with the 24-year-old next season, as he is a talented player with the potential to improve even further. He has the scope to develop into an excellent option for the club in 2022/23, as suggested by Speakman’s comments and his form in League One, and the Sunderland manager would surely enjoy attempting to get the best out of him if the Black Cats can obtain him for another season.

This is why the ex-Norwich and Preston manager will be thrilled by the club’s efforts to bring Broadhead back to the Stadium of Light, and he will now be hoping that a deal can be agreed for the Welshman.

Leeds: Bamford attracting transfer interest

Leeds United centre-forward Patrick Bamford is attracting increasing interest ahead of the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Mail, who claim that, should the Whites go on to suffer relegation from the Premier League on Sunday, Newcastle United could make a move for the 28-year-old striker in the off-season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The report goes on to state that a new centre-forward is Eddie Howe’s priority in the summer transfer window, with it being claimed that the Magpies have a transfer budget of around £60m plus player sales to work with in their hunt for a new frontman.

Unforgivable decision

While Leeds are by no means considering the prospect of playing Championship football next season just yet, should the Whites fail to secure their Premier League status against Brentford on Sunday, the argument that selling Bamford would be an unforgivable decision by Andrea Radrizzani is an easy one to make.

Indeed, the £18m-rated forward proved influential in helping the Whites secure a return to the top flight over his 45 Championship appearances back in 2019/20, scoring 16 goals, registering two assists and creating six big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 3.2 shots and making 0.5 key passes per game.

The £74k-per-week striker then undoubtedly proved his Premier League quality over 38 outings last season, bagging 17 goals, providing seven assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.8 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

These returns saw the England international average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.01, ranking him as Marcelo Bielsa’s seventh-best player in the top-flight – with the 28-year-old playing a key role in Leeds securing a top-half finish in the league.

And, with injury having seen the Nottingham Forest academy graduate miss the vast majority of the current campaign, considering Leeds’ current record of 40 goals scored – 22 fewer than they managed last season – it is abundantly clear just how important a part of Jesse Marsch’s side Bamford is.

As such, whether Leeds survive or go down come the final whistle on Sunday, it is clear to see that cashing in on the centre-forward who Sam McGuire dubbed a “goal machine” would be a huge mistake by Radrizzani, as Bamford has proven that he can both fire the Whites up and lead his team to the higher reaches of the Premier League standings.

Celtic sweating on fitness of key duo

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is facing a nervous wait regarding the fitness of two of his key men ahead of Tuesday’s mouthwatering Champions League encounter with holders, Real Madrid.

What’s the word?

Speaking after Saturday’s thumping Old Firm derby victory over Rangers (via Glasgow Live), the title-winning coach revealed that both Kyogo Furuhashi and Carl Starfelt will have to be assessed having both been forced off in that 4-0 triumph.

The 56-year-old stated: “We’ll see how it is. It was a shoulder injury [for Kyogo]. Carl had a niggle in his knee. It’s a bit of a blow because Kyogo has been in brilliant form so far this season. We’ll assess them after this.”

The in-form Kyogo was substituted just a matter of minutes into yesterday’s 4-0 win after sustaining a shoulder injury, while teammate Starfelt was replaced by summer signing Mortiz Jenz early in the second half with a knee complaint.

Huge blow for Postecoglou

Postecoglou will no doubt be sweating on the availability of those two impressive figures, as the former Yokohama boss looks to prepare his side for what will be a stern test against the mighty Los Blancos at Parkhead in just a few days’ time.

After a five-year absence from Europe’s premier competition, supporters will no doubt be desperate to see their side put up a real fight against the 14-time champions, as the Hoops look to carry over their sparkling domestic form against the continent’s best.

With six wins from six thus far in the Scottish Premiership for the Glasgow outfit, one man who was been integral to that sensational start to the campaign is Kyogo, with the Japan international having scored six goals in as many games thus far.

The 27-year-old – who arrived in Scotland last summer – had previously netted 12 goals across in just 20 top-flight games during 2021/22 in what was a blistering debut campaign at Celtic Park, despite enduring a lengthy stint out with injury.

Although Giorgos Giakoumakis offers a real quality alternative, Postecoglou and co will no doubt be hoping to have the former Vissel Kobe man leading the line instead, with the 15-cap gem integral to their fluid attacking approach.

As for Starfelt, while there is strength in depth at centre-back with both the aforementioned Jenz and Stephen Welsh in reserve, the Sweden international has been a solid presence in recent times, shaking off a rocky start to form an “immense” partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers last term – in the words of pundit Chris Sutton.

The former Rubin Kazan man has already been blighted by injury in the early weeks of the season, albeit while having added another string to his bow after scoring twice in the league already this term.

With loanee Jenz still easing his way into life at Celtic, it may well require the more experienced Starfelt to help contend with the likes of Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr in midweek.

It will prove a sizeable task trying to get a result against Carlo Ancelotti’s imperious outfit, with the potential absence of both the Swede and teammate Kyogo sure to come as a gutting blow for the Greek-Australian manager.

Paine's new Australia face first Test of their quality

After nearly giving up playing cricket in 2017, Paine will be at the forefront of Australia’s rebuild operation, of performance and public trust, among other things

Daniel Brettig in Dubai06-Oct-2018When Tim Paine last led Australia onto the field for a Test, in Johannesburg, they weren’t so much a team as a crater where one had once stood.Shocked and then divided by the Newlands ball tampering scandal, they were mortified to find out a tearful Darren Lehmann was resigning as coach amid the mess. Some players, like Matt Renshaw, were running on Red Bull fumes, having been flown in at the last moment. They were exhausted, mentally and physically after an Ashes winning summer had unravelled in South Africa, against an opponent showing greater expertise not only in how to bat against a reverse swinging ball but also how to bowl it.Prior to that Test, Paine’s first official fixture as full-time captain, the Wanderers had reverberated with a playlist of songs at high volume – Australian staples like by Paul Kelly, by Nick Cave, by Australian Crawl, by Crowded House and by The Triffids. If the songs were familiar, the experience of them at training was foreign, and what transpired over the next few days demonstrated that classic tunes were of minimal help to a team swimming in confusion, grief and anger.”That was a unique set of circumstances, that was something that no-one was prepared for or ready for,” Paine said when asked how far removed Johannesburg felt from Dubai. “So it’s exciting we’re back concentrating on just cricket.”Ahead of the first Test against Pakistan, the only sounds at Australia’s training were very familiar: the cracks of bat on ball, the plop of catches into soft hands and the hum of expectant conversation amongst a team that features three debutants: Aaron Finch, Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head. They have a new coach in Justin Langer, and a new approach forged out of the Newlands fallout, the requirements of Asian conditions and leadership blueprints provided as much out of the AFL as anything in cricket. This is true of Langer’s restless and ever-searching approach, picking and choosing ideas from the minds of many, as if a bower bird rather than the Kookaburra that once emblazoned his bats. It is also true of the leadership model signed off by the Cricket Australia Board, with Paine supported by dual vice-captains in Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood (absent) on the premise that neither will seek to tunnel under their leader to make their own claim to the captaincy.Getty ImagesAnd it is true of Paine’s primary influences as a football-loving Tasmanian, who views the captain less as the all-powerful figure than as the man tasked with building unity behind a shared plan. It is notable, too, that on a recent study tour of the United States, Paine and Langer visited several sporting organisations, including the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Cubs, where there is no single on-field captain. All players are expected to lead when needed.”My leadership style is, I suppose I’m more inclusive than other cricket captains have been in the past,” Paine said. “I’ve come from a footy background, so I’m a big believer in the power of the team and certainly take the value and opinions of my teammates really seriously. We’re all involved to some point in the decisions that are made and I think that’s really important when you’re trying to get buy-in and trying to get guys to play for you, I think they’ve got to be part of that process. That’s the way I go about it.”Particularly going back over a longer period of time, the cricket team was seen as the captain’s team. I’m not a huge believer in that, I think the team is everyone’s team and I’m the fortunate one who gets to lead it from the front. Yes, a lot of the decisions, most of the decisions fall back on me, which is fine, and I’m happy to do that, but I also believe when you want people to follow you, you’ve got to get their input and make them feel a part of the decision-making.”As an eloquent spokesman for the team in crisis, Paine has in many ways met his moment after nearly eight years on the fringe, beset by multiple finger fractures and then the crisis of batting confidence that followed it.His life experience at the very edge of a playing career – so much so he nearly quit the game in 2017 to take another job – has helped to inform the approach he took to the crisis of South Africa. He’ll now carry the start of a rebuild operation, of performance and public trust, that will take in this series, home assignments against India and Sri Lanka and then, beyond next year’s 50-over World Cup, an Ashes tour of England.”There’s no doubt this Test series is about winning. We’re playing international sport, so it’s the highest level and I think players will be judged on how many games we’ve won,” Paine said. “That’s certainly really important, but on the flipside of that, the image of Australian cricket is also really important to me and Justin and the rest of our team, so we’re going to be going about things in a really professional, really respectful manner and we’ll continue to do that for the foreseeable future.”There’s been a lot of talk over the last four or five months and it’s great now that we’re on a new tour, we’ve got a new group, so it hasn’t been something that’s come up a hell of a lot, the guys are really excited by the challenge that’s been presented over here. Australian teams haven’t had a heap of success over here, so it’s a really exciting challenge for this group, it’s a group that a lot of people haven’t given a huge chance to and that’s something that’s driving us and something that excites us.”There was a reassuring quality to a lot of Paine’s match eve questions. Sample this: Why did Peter Siddle get the nod ahead of Michael Neser? “We just think Sidds has been playing quite a bit of cricket, he’s in good form, and we knew he was bowling really well in the lead up.”
Did Matt Renshaw miss out for Labuschagne because he had not played enough cricket due to a recent hamstring strain then last week’s concussion? “He hasn’t had enough cricket, so the decision was made there to go with Marnus. He’s had a bit of an unlucky run, Renners, with injury, he missed a game in India and then got hit on the head, couldn’t bat in the last game.”We’re certainly picking a team that we think can win over here in these conditions and there was obviously a lot of discussion about it. But we think Marnus brings a lot to the group, he’s a really good player of spin and we think as well his leg spin will be something we can throw at the Pakistanis, they might not expect him, and they’ve really improved in the last 12 months.”Can opening bring the best out of Usman Khawaja? “Ussy has opened a little bit through his career, he opened last week for us in the tour game and right at the moment he’s in a really good spot, he’s batting really well so I don’t think it would matter to Usman where he’s batting at the moment, he’s in really good touch and I think he’ll have a great tour.”As for the difference made by Langer’s arrival, Paine spoke in terms of a partnership that would unsettle some traditionalists, but that is now vital to Australia returning to a higher standing in the game as well as the ICC’s Test match rankings.”JL and I have known each other and had a good relationship for a long time, so a lot of our thoughts are very similar,” Paine said. “We’re certainly not exactly the same, no two people are, but we’re happy to challenge each other when we need to and we have a really open and honest relationship, so it’s been fantastic to be working with him so far and we’ve gelled together really well and so has this whole squad.”One part of the effort to rehabilitate has the Australian team being documented by filmmakers on the journey from Langer’s appointment, through the home summer and into the World Cup and the Ashes next year. Those songs that rang in Paine’s ears at the Wanderers, in the midst of unprecedented chaos for the national team, would play best on the soundtrack to the Test team’s redemption tale. Dubai and Pakistan, all hot days and dry decks, is where that begins. And for all the improvement in the team’s mindset relative to the Wanderers, a fundamental question remains – how good can Paine’s side really be?
