Quinton de Kock returns to top ten after big runs against West Indies

Quinton de Kock’s 96 in the first innings of the second Test, after he scored 141* in the first, against West Indies has put him back in the top ten – at No. 10 – in the Test rankings for batters. He was last in the top ten back in December 2019, but after top-scoring with 237 runs in the two-Test series, which South Africa won 2-0, he has moved above Babar Azam and Dimuth Karunaratne.Related

Rassie van der Dussen was a distant second to de Kock in the run-scorers’ list, with 125 runs, while Jermaine Blackwood was third with 88 and Dean Elgar fourth, with 87, and the three of them made gains on the table too: Elgar was up one spot to No. 19, van der Dussen up 31 spots to No. 43, and Blackwood one place behind him at No. 44, a rise of 12 positions.Jason Holder started the series as the top-ranked allrounder in Tests but average returns – 34 runs in four innings and six wickets (four of them in the first, which was before the period used in the latest rankings) – have pushed him down to second place behind Ravindra Jadeja, who is currently playing the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in Southampton.Kagiso Rabada was the player of the match in the second Test for his haul of five wickets, and moved up one place to sixth as a result, while Keshav Maharaj’s seven wickets, including a hat-trick, helped him go three places up to 28th. Lungi Ngidi also picked up three wickets in the game, and went up three places to No. 41.Kemar Roach was by far the best West Indies bowler on show, returning 3 for 45 and 4 for 52, and that took him close to the top ten for bowlers, as he finished at 12th place.

Essex rise from 182 all out to take control against Durham

Hosts fluff their lines in response to meagre first innings as 16 wickets fall in a day

David Hopps27-May-2021It was the last ball of the day that really rubbed it in. A ball that said that Essex would take some beating from here. A ball that said their Championship defence was growing in intensity. A ball that said that Durham might be about to suffer more anguish after their heartache in the same fixture last month.David Bedingham had been Durham’s highly-fancied representative in the race to be first to 1,000 runs before it became apparent that the only winner would be a sour-faced English Spring. And when Sam Cook shaded a delivery away from him to strike his off stump, and held out his fists in exultation, it already had the makings of a decisive moment.Sixteen wickets fell on the first day and with Durham resting on 58 for 6, Essex’s 182 suddenly looked indomitable. Massive credit for that goes to Michael Pepper, whose previous three first-class matches had brought 61 runs at 10.61, but who stood in for England-bound Dan Lawrence with such alacrity that he posted 92 and must have had visions of his maiden first-class century when he fell lbw.Related

Bedingham’s wicket – Cook’s third – had added impact because he actually hit the stumps. As many as 11 batters fell leg before as the ball nipped around, including all five of the other Durham wickets to fall, which has only been surpassed on the first day of a Championship match on one occasion – an extraordinary day at Luton in 1995. It can all become a bit repetitive, especially if somebody close to you wants to discuss the intricacies of the lbw Law. On days like this, umpires deserve double pay.You couldn’t argue with any of them, but people do. Durham’s captain, Scott Borthwick, appeared to contest his even though replays suggested Cook had him bang to rights, and emerged from his crouch to gesture at the umpire. He appeared to be suggesting the ball had done too much (it hadn’t), but he could have been signalling “can you bring me the bill please?” – a practice gesture perhaps for the evening ahead now that the restaurants have reopened. Most lbws on first day of a Championship match

13: Northamptonshire v Essex, Luton, 1995
11: Gloucestershire v Sussex, Bristol, 2010
11: Durham v Essex, Chester-le-Street, 2021

Borthwick has had a lean time with the bat since he made a century against Essex at Chelmsford – all to no avail – but he has supervised a sturdy Durham recovery which even if they lost here (players must not give up, but journalists are obliged to forecast) would still leave them in contention when the final two rounds take place in July. There has been no finer recovery in this Championship season than Essex’s victory over Durham in that fixture in mid-April. Blown away for 96 and 163 runs adrift on first innings, they still triumphed by 43 runs. Durham, as hard as they tried to block it out, endured the creeping realisation for several hours that all would not turn out well.Six weeks on, and Group One remains in the balance. Without that victory, Essex would have been out of contention. Despite that defeat, Durham have proved a resilient bunch. Essex, who began three points ahead of them in second place, but who have only three matches left to Durham’s four, have reached a pivotal point in their Championship defence – and they have the leaders, Nottinghamshire, up next.Scourge of Durham in that first meet-up was Simon Harmer, whose match return of 10 for 136 suggested that once more county batters would collapse before him. But a decidedly cold April has been followed by a markedly wet May. Now the seamers hold sway and everybody is expected to be permanently menacing. Half an hour without a wicket, with 20 added, is a recovery.Virtually the first warm weather of the summer sucked the dampness from the ground, the ball seamed and the relaid Riverside square is so uneven that wicketkeepers are learning the art of stopping the ball with their ankles. (Perhaps David de Gea could try it in the next penalty shoot-out). The square has been known to go flat this season, but it would be a surprise if it did so in the next couple of days.Unsurprisingly, Chris Rushworth had a say in things. Having now passed graham Onions as Durham’s leading first-class wicket-taker, he can make himself unassailable. He only took one new-ball wicket on his way to 4 for 32, but it was that of Alastair Cook, a left-hander who was lbw to a ball from around the wicket, a difficult art but not as difficult as everybody imagined before ball tracking which is why what was once a sign of desperation has become the norm.Chris Rushworth celebrates taking the wicket of Alastair Cook•Getty ImagesPepper was also a victim for Rushworth, so annoyed to be hit in front that he walked off instantly. He survived a couple of early lbw appeals, but it did not inhibit his off-side drives and cuts when the opportunity presented itself and he played all of them with a flourish. When he fell, Essex capsized, losing their last five wickets for three runs in 17 balls. If Rushworth had been around in 1659, he would assuredly have led the Rising of the North and it would probably have got further than Bramham Moor, with the Earl of Sussex imagining that he was about to emerge victorious and then being struck on the ankle by an arrow.Ben Raine did not bowl as well, but he found enough movement to finish with four cut-price wickets, including the Essex skipper, Tom Westley, who made a 14-ball duck before he – you’ve guessed it – was lbw, too. In his England days, that used to be presented as a weakness, but 11 in the day does provide a decent-enough alibi.Durham’s response was a disaster, played out over 33 overs. Michael Jones left his delivery and was aghast at his error. The most successful batter was Cameron Bancroft. There again, when you have had to suffer the nonsensical over-analysis of a guarded and thoroughly responsible answer to a rewarmed question about ball tampering the treachery of a Chester-le-Street pitch is nothing to worry about at all.

Arsenal now expected to bid for "underrated" Mikel Arteta target imminently

Arsenal are expected to bid for an "underrated" Mikel Arteta target imminently, as they plan their next summer signing after Riccardo Calafiori.

Edu and Arteta eyeing three more key arrivals for Arsenal

After securing a new option for their back line, and a very promising one at that in Calafiori, sporting director Edu Gaspar and the wider recruitment team will be weighing their next move as the latter phase of this transfer window approaches.

Edu focused on signing £60m star after previous claim he wants Arsenal move

The Brazilian is working to bring in a new striker.

Just five weeks remain for Arteta and Edu to get Arsenal's remaining top transfer targets over the line, as they prepare for a third-time-lucky attempt to win the Premier League title and get the better of Man City.

The Gunners pushed Pep Guardiola's side all the way to the final day last season, narrowly missing out on their first domestic crown in 20 years, and supporters will be keen to see Arsenal shore up the squad to go that one step further.

Calafiori, who can play both centrally and as a full-back, was announced as the club's first outfield signing of the window earlier this week – after the Italian put pen to paper on a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium.

It has been claimed that Arsenal also want a new goalkeeper, midfielder and forward through the door before deadline day on August 30. Arsenal are apparently still in talks with Wolves over Daniel Bentley for a new option between the sticks, while Arteta continues to register a serious interest in striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen has also been subject to an Arsenal approach, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, so it will be interesting to see if Arteta finally gets an out-and-out number nine through the door.

There is also the matter of a potential new midfielder, who may well act as a replacement for the exit-bound Thomas Partey. The Ghanian has been heavily linked with a move away from Arsenal this window, with clubs in Saudi Arabia showing interest in signing Partey and bringing an end to his four-year stay at London Colney.

Arsenal expected to bid for Mikel Merino imminently

Real Sociedad star and Spain midfielder Mikel Merino, who impressed on-lookers with his displays at Euro 2024, is being repeatedly mentioned by the press as a top target for Arteta.

There have even been reports that Arteta is personally trying to convince Merino to join Arsenal, with The Mirror and senior sports reporter Dan Marsh sharing an update on their chase for the 28-year-old.

They claim that Arsenal are expected to bid for Merino imminently as Edu and Arteta attempt to bring in a new midfield man. The former Newcastle star, called "underrated" by Football Analyst Ben Mattinson, made 45 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad last season – scoring eight goals and registering five assists.

A deal for Merino could cost around £25 million, with the Spaniard now in the final 12 months of his contract.

Tottenham in talks over 3-player swap deal involving Lo Celso and £50m ace

Tottenham are believed to be in talks with a three-player swap deal involving Giovani Lo Celso and a £50 million ace, coming after making a "new proposal" behind the scenes.

Spurs targeting new midfield No 6 for Postecoglou

Uncertainty surrounds the futures of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Lo Celso, with both midfield men tipped by some reports to leave N17 in the coming weeks.

Real Madrid eye another "special" Tottenham gem alongside Cristian Romero

The Galacticos have cast their eyes to N17 again.

Hojbjerg is believed to be keen on departing Tottenham, after a Premier League campaign where he was largely relegated to Ange Postecoglou's substitutes' bench. The Denmark international started just eight out of his 36 top-flight matches, and could seek to move on as a result with his contract also expiring next year.

Lo Celso is also rumoured to be unhappy with his game time at Spurs, which may result in the Argentine pushing to quit this summer. Some reports have even claimed Tottenham would be open to selling Yves Bissouma for the right offer, so Postecoglou's midfield could look pretty different next season, depending on developments.

In any case, it's been claimed that Spurs are targeting a midfield No 6 to potentially replace one of the outgoing men, but also to hand Postecoglou a new option more tailor-made to the Australian's system.

Tottenham have long been linked with a move for Conor Gallagher, as pressure grows on Chelsea to sell the Englishman before his contract expires next year. Another midfielder Spurs like is Atalanta star Ederson, with ex-managing director and unofficial advisor Fabio Paratici recommending him.

As has been widely reported by reliable media sources, Aston Villa starlet Jacob Ramsey is also a candidate for the Lilywhites midfield. Ramsey, who made 16 top-flight appearances under Unai Emery last term, is liked by Postecoglou and technical director Johan Lange is said to be pushing for the north Londoners to strike a deal (Alasdair Gold).

It will be a difficult move to pull off, though, as Villa are holding firm on their not-for-sale stance as things stand after Tottenham had an opening player-plus-cash bid of £20 million and Lo Celso rejected.

That isn't to stop Spurs from trying, as an update emerges on their pursuit of Ramsey this week.

Tottenham in talks over three-player swap deal for Ramsey

According to Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey, Tottenham are in talks over a three-player swap deal involving Ramsey and another unnamed Villa player.

This "new proposal" apparently still includes Lo Celso going in the opposite direction, but as of yet, it is unclear who the other player is who would be making the move to Tottenham with Ramsey.

Emery's side value the 23-year-old at around £50 million, with chairman Daniel Levy opting to try and include players like Lo Celso to drive down Ramsey's price

Celtic could forget about Bernardo by signing SPFL star

Celtic could use the summer transfer window, which officially opened for business last Friday, to make additions to bolster their playing squad.

The Hoops won two trophies during the 2023/24 campaign as they lifted the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup in May, beating their local rivals to both.

Brendan Rodgers, however, may want to go in search of a domestic treble, which was achieved by Ange Postecoglou the season before, next term.

In order to do that, the Northern Irish manager could need to improve his options across the park by dipping into the market before the window slams shut at the end of August.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

Whilst that could involve new additions coming through the door at Parkhead, Celtic are also looking to bring back at least one of their loan stars from last season.

Celtic's pursuit of Portuguese wizard

Portuguese outlet Record, via the Daily Record, recently reported that the Scottish giants are struggling to secure a deal to sign central midfielder Paulo Bernardo on a permanent deal this summer.

The Benfica maestro spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Paradise and the club had an option to make it permanent for a fee of £6m, but decided to attempt to negotiate a lower fee with the Liga Portugal giants.

It was stated that the Bhoys were able to clear that hurdle and, yet, a deal does not appear to be close as they have not been able to agree personal terms with the young magician.

Paulo Bernardo

The report claimed that Bernardo is on a substantial wage and is unwilling to take a pay cut to make the move to Scotland on a permanent basis, and the Hoops 'having difficulty' meeting his demands at this moment in time.

Record did not reveal how much the right-footed whiz is on per-week at Benfica but noted that it is a contract that he signed as a teenager when he was viewed as a player with similar potential to Joao Felix, which is why it is a substantial package for the Bhoys to take on.

Rodgers and Celtic could, however, ditch their pursuit of the expensive midfielder by pushing ahead with a deal for reported target Luke McCowan.

Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph recently reported that the Scottish giants have been keeping tabs on the SPFL central midfielder, whose current deal with Dundee is set to expire next summer.

The journalist added that teams in the MLS and the English Championship are also interested in the left-footed dynamo, which suggests that the Hoops are facing plenty of competition to secure his signature before the end of the window.

It remains to be revealed, however, how much Dundee would demand for their star midfielder, as his contract expiring next year means that they run the risk of losing him for nothing if they do not cash in on him ahead of next season.

Celtic can now abandon their pursuit of Bernardo and swoop to sign McCowan instead to bolster Rodgers' midfield for the 2024/25 campaign.

Paulo Bernardo's season at Celtic in numbers

The 22-year-old talent joined the club on a season-long loan from Benfica last summer and enjoyed a solid, but unspectacular, first year in Scottish football.

Celtic midfielder Paulo Bernardo.

Bernardo failed to nail down a regular place in the starting XI, with just 11 starts to his name in the Premiership, but did show glimpses of his quality when given an opportunity to shine.

The likes of Matt O'Riley, Reo Hatate, Tomoki Iwata, and Callum McGregor being on the books provide strong competition for minutes in the middle of the park, which is why the young talent did not rack up starts week-in-week-out.

In his relatively limited time on the pitch for the Premiership champions, though, the Benfica loanee did showcase his ability to make things happen at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, the Portugal youth international was directly involved in six goals in 11 starts – more than one every other start on average.

However, he also lost more duels than he won and this suggests that the young gem struggled with the physicality of Scottish football in his first, and possibly last, year with the Hoops.

Why Celtic should sign Luke McCowan

The Bhoys could forget all about their pursuit of Bernardo, though, with a swoop to sign McCowan due to his proven quality in the Premiership.

At the age of 26, he would not arrive with as much potential as the 22-year-old Portuguese starlet but is also not an over-the-hill veteran with no room to grow.

The left-footed ace should be heading into the prime years of his career and this means that the Hoops could get plenty of seasons of quality out of him, if he can adapt to playing for Rodgers at Parkhead.

His form for Dundee last season suggests that the potential is there for him to come in and offer more than Bernardo as competition for the likes of Hatate, O'Riley, and McGregor for a starting spot in midfield.

McCowan has proven his ability to score and assist goals at an impressive rate from a midfield position at Premiership level, with more than three times as many goals as Bernardo and 1.1 more key passes per game on average.

The 26-year-old ace, who writer Kai Watson dubbed "tenacious", could, therefore, provide more than the Benfica youngster in the middle of the park, due to his superior quality in the final third.

Passaram perto

Grêmio cresce no jogo

Tom Bailey takes five but Lancashire frustrated by rain

Rain forced the match to be abandoned with the points shared after Lancashire had restricted Leicestershire to 150-9 in the North Group Vitality Blast match at Grace Road.It was particularly frustrating for the visitors, who played some fine out-cricket after captain Dane Vilas won the toss and put the Foxes in.Vilas himself led the way with a hat-trick of catches, including a brilliant one-handed effort leaping backwards to dismiss Leicestershire danger man Arron Lilley, and a diving two-handed take after a sprint along along the boundary from long-off to end Ben Mike’s innings and secure Lightning seamer Tom Bailey his best T20 return of 5-17. Lancashire had arrived at Grace Road with confidence taken from the manner in which they beat Durham by a comfortable 27 runs on Thursday. Understandably, they made no changes to the side which started at the Emirates Riverside, 22-year-old left-arm spinner Tom Hartley retaining his place, while Leicestershire gave T20 county debuts to Tom Taylor, George Rhodes and Ireland international Gareth Delany, signed at short notice last week after it was confirmed South African batsman Janneman Malan would be unable to travel due to pandemic restrictions.Delany, opening the innings, did not last long, losing his off stump to Bailey in the second over, but Lilley hit both Hartley and Liam Hurt for straight sixes in going to 26 before Vilas’ athletic leap as he tried to chip a Danny Lamb full-toss over mid-on brought his downfall. It set a pattern for the innings. In the 12th over Bailey took an equally brilliant catch, one-handed low to his left at extra cover, to catch Rhodes off Hurt, and wickets continued to fall as Leicestershire tried to pick up the scoring rate, though Mike hit Lamb for consecutive sixes in the penultimate over. The rain had already begun to fall, however, and after 90 minutes umpires Nick Cook and Rob White decided there was no prospect of play resuming.”I’ve not played white ball cricket in three years, and I didn’t think I was going to play this year either, so it’s nice to have an opportunity and I’ve taken it with both hands,” Bailey said. “We’re such a strong white ball side it’s always going to be tough to get in and I’ve had to wait in the wings.”We were good in the field in our first game but we fielded so well today as a group. My catch was an absolute worldie – I’ll never take one like that again. It was the highlight of my day, better than taking five wickets. And for a 35-year-old [Vilas] to throw himself around the field like that, it’s great to see.”Leicestershire captain Colin Ackermann said: “You want to get on a roll in this format, especially when there’s only ten games, so to lose the first two to the weather is frustrating. Saying that, I thought we were about 15 runs short. They were exceptional in the field and took four outstanding catches and saved 20 runs.”It’s our first chance to bat in the comp, we’ll learn from that display and come back strong against Durham at Headingley on Monday.”
