Tottenham chiefs make first pre-summer move for £13m England youth star

Tottenham have made an early move to land one of their transfer targets this summer, according to reports.

Werner's Spurs future in doubt

Tottenham are keen to add some more firepower to their attack this summer, and one easy way to achieve that would be to sign Timo Werner to a permanent deal.

The German is on loan at the north London club from RB Leipzig, and is proving something of a success on the left-hand side for Ange Postecoglou's side. In his 13 Premier League appearances since arriving in January, the 28-year-old has found the net twice and grabbed three assists.

And it would be an easy deal to make permanent too, with there being a pre-existing option to buy the player in the loan deal.

Timo Werner scores for Tottenham

The option, believed to be in the region of £17m, has to be activated before EURO 2024 kicks off in Germany, giving Tottenham just six weeks to decide whether or not to retain the former Chelsea man and hand him a long-term deal in north London.

"In terms of his future, like most players, the decisions will be made at the appropriate time," Ange Postecoglou explained when quizzed on the situation earlier in the season. "I think he's been a great signing. He's been a really important part of our structure and I think he can also improve."

But at 28-years-old, there may be concerns about handing him a long term deal, especially in the wider context of Tottenham's new-look transfer policy that largely targets players with their prime years firmly ahead of them. With that in mind, an alternative option is seemingly being worked on.

England youngster looks North London bound

Now, reports in Italy have revealed some insight into Tottenham's transfer plans. That comes courtesy of Tutto Juve [Via Sport Witness], who report that Tottenham have "come forward" for Juventus talent Samuel Iling-Junior as Daniel Levy and Johan Lange kick-start their first move of the summer for Ange.

Spurs have been linked with a move for the 20-year-old previously, and with just 12 months left on his contract in Turin a departure this summer looks likely.

A regular scorer across England's youth teams, the winger has started just two Serie A games under Max Allegri this season and is seemingly surplus to requirements.

Now, he is being linked with a move back to the Premier League, with Spurs and Brighton both hot on his trail. Though a winger by trade, Iling-Junior has also operated at wing-back and could well provide an excellent alternative to Destiny Udogie, who did similar during his final season with Udinese.

He is valued at just 15m euros (£12.9m) by Juventus, which would make him a cheaper and younger alternative than Werner, who could potentially provide a much greater upside and versatility in the future than the German.

Now reportedly "closer to farewell" than ever with the Old Lady, could he be the perfect summer addition for Tottenham?

Upon returning to England, Bright and Co. will play another friendly against Feyenoord on September 7 before starting their WSL title defence against Aston Villa on September 20.

Aston Villa’s 9/10 star was as good as Watkins & McGinn vs Lille

After breezing past Ajax with ease in the previous round, Aston Villa welcomed Ligue 1 side Lille to Villa Park on Thursday night.

Unai Emery’s side set out with one mission in mind: to go to France with a lead, and they certainly achieved that, defeating the visitors 2-1.

The Villans could not have gotten off to a better start, opening the scoring in the 13th minute, and just before the hour mark, they had a two-goal advantage.

Unai Emery

It looked set to be the perfect night, however, a late Lille goal did spoil the party slightly, making it all to play for in the second leg.

But in truth, the outcome could have been much worse if it weren’t for one star who was even better than John McGinn and Ollie Watkins.

McGinn and Watkins’ performances vs Lille

As usual, Villa lined up in the Spaniard’s 4-4-1-1 formation, with the attack being led by none other than Watkins, with the support of McGinn just behind him.

Both players combined brilliantly for the first goal of the game, with the England attacker meeting the Scot’s inch-perfect corner kick to power the ball home via his head, scoring his 25th goal of the campaign.

After the break, Villa’s second goal once again heavily involved McGinn, as the provider turned goal-scorer, placing the ball into the bottom corner from outside the box with a controlled first-time finish.

To add further context to just how influential the dangerous duo were on the night, the number 11 was handed an 8/10 match rating by Birmingham World, while the 29-year-old was given an impressive 9/10, but they still weren’t the most important on the field.

Emi Martinez statistics against Lille

The Villa faithful may already believe that Emiliano Martinez is the best goalkeeper in the world, hence their common chant, but he truly showed his quality yesterday.

The Argentine is an extremely important player to Emery’s side, not just because of his ability to keep the ball out of the back of the net but also because of his elite mentality, which will prove to be vital throughout the rest of the tournament.

In Birmingham World’s player ratings article, Martinez was handed a joint-highest 9/10 rating, stating, “absolutely outstanding to get his team out of trouble so often,” and although he was eventually unable to keep a clean sheet, the World Cup winner pulled off similar heroics to the ones he displayed in Qatar against France, coming out on top in crucial moments.

Aston Villa'sEmilianoMartinez

Throughout the tie, Martinez looked confident, comfortable, and relaxed, as shown by his pass accuracy of 90% and his 40 touches in the table below, which enabled Villa to not give possession away cheaply.

However, it's clear that it was his shot-stopping ability that deservedly got him the plaudits, as he made six saves in the tie, all of them from attempts inside the penalty area.

Most impressively, the 31-year-old had a goal prevented of 1.67, which is a brilliant indicator of just how good the chances were that he was denying, and shows that Villa could have drawn or lost the game without his heroics.

Overall, without Martinez in between the sticks, there’s no way that Villa would be going to Lille with the advantage, and although the goal-scorers tend to take the headlines, the Villa fanbase will certainly know who their real hero was with his colossal display in goal.

Arsenal struck gold with a star who’d be worth more than Rice today

It may have taken a few rocky years and some sizable investments, but Arsenal are once again one of the best teams in Europe.

Mikel Arteta's side are top of the Premier League and have a real chance of winning the Champions League this year – should they finally get on over Bayern Munich, that is.

The Gunners have a team full of superstars, although it's one of the summer signings who could claim to be the most important, Declan Rice.

Declan Rice's valuation in 2024

Rice completed his long-awaited move to north London from West Ham United last July after what must've felt like a lifetime of back-and-forth negotiations for all involved.

There was a lot of pressure on the Englishman's shoulders to be the player to take the Gunners from last year's nearly men to this year's champions, and so far, it'd be fair to say he's hit those expectations if not exceeded them.

He's made 39 appearances for the side so far this season – and started 100% of league games – in which he has scored six goals and provided seven assists, becoming a key contributor in both defence and attack.

His brilliant form in red and white led to him captaining England for the first time on Tuesday night, and unsurprisingly, his valuation has steadily grown since his transfer.

According to Football Transfers' Expected Value Model, the 6 foot 1 titan was worth just €71m – £61m – in August 2023 but is now worth around €92m, which is about £79m, and while that's lower than the fee the Gunners paid for him in the summer, most fans were well aware that there was always going to be a premium upon his head should he leave the London Stadium.

However, his valuation is still significantly lower than the price that a former club great was sold for in the past, when converted to today's money.

Cesc Fàbregas' valuation in 2024

The player in question is former Spain international Cesc Fàbregas. While calling him a great of the club could be controversial given his move to Chelsea, there is no denying that when he wore the famous red and white of Arsenal, he was magnificent.

The Arenys de Mar-born phenom joined the Gunners from Barcelona as a child and became the youngest first-team player in the club's history when he made his debut in a League Cup clash in October 2003 at just 16 years and 177 days.

Over the next eight years, the "astonishing talent," as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, made 303 appearances under Arsène Wenger, in which he scored 57 goals and provided 95 assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.99 games, which, given his age, was remarkable.

However, while he was dearly loved by the club and its fans, the call to return to Barcelona was too strong.

In the summer of 2011, he finally rejoined the Catalan side for a fee that, thanks to the clever people at Totally Money, can be converted into today's money.

So, how much does it come to? Well, the £30m Arsenal received for the Spaniard in August 2011 would be a whopping £81m today, or around £2m more than Rice's current valuation.

Ultimately, while the club would surely have preferred to keep Fabregas at the club forever, the fee they received for him certainly looks generous by today's standards.

West Ham preparing for big name club to seal deal for £12.3 million talent

West Ham are preparing for a big name club to seal the signing of a "wonderful" Irons "talent" for around £12.3 million this summer, according to reports this week.

West Ham exits expected this summer

Alongside manager David Moyes as thing stand, with his contract looking set to expire at the end of this season, there are other figures at West Ham who could also depart east London.

Both Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma have been regularly linked with moves away to Saudi Arabia, while star midfielder Lucas Paqueta is rumoured to be back on Man City's radar ahead of a potential summer swoop.

There is also the small matter of expiring player contracts alongside Moyes, with a fair few currently heading into their final months as a West Ham player.

The likes of Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell appear set to bid farewell to the Hammers soon, while young defender Ben Johnson is apparently nearing a Bosman move to Crystal Palace.

“Talks with Johnson have proven unsuccessful,” stated ExWHUemployee on The West Ham Way Podcast last week.

Ben Johnson in action for West Ham.

“He’s been linked now with an exit and Crystal Palace are leading the way. Ledley King though, who is a relative of Johnson’s, is trying to engineer a move to Spurs.

“At this stage though it appears an agreement between the player and the south London club is at quite an advanced stage, which could sadly see Johnson head south of the river this summer, after 17 years at West Ham.”

Another player who is firmly up for an exit nominee is winger Said Benrahma. The Algerian ace is currently out on loan at Ligue 1 giants Lyon, after a real bit of January deadline day drama over his move to France.

West Ham expecting Lyon to seal £12.3 million Benrahma deal

According to Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey, West Ham fully expect Lyon to sign Benrahma permanently for £12.3 million – as is the buy-option clause in his contract.

The 28-year-old is enjoying his time at Lyon and is settled after returning to France, with "sources" telling FI that Moyes' side are preparing for Lyon to trigger his buy-option after a promising start to life across the channel.

Benrahma has attracted mixed opinion during his time at West Ham, as the tricky forward could turn it on in flashes but arguably wasn't given consistent enough opportunities by Moyes. However, the former Brentford star did earn a few real admirers at Rush Green.

“At the time I thought it was stupid because there was a young player everyone was raving about in the exact same position, and they sold him and brought in Benrahma and I’m thinking really," said Frank McAvennie to West Ham Zone last October.

“But he proved me wrong, he’s a great talent, a wonderful, wonderful talent. So it just shows you David Moyes knows what he’s doing.”

The former United captain drew comparisons between his time at the club to the time under the Glazers when they saw an epic downfall. He pointed out that the feeling of being part of one big family played an important role in the success that Sir Alex Ferguson's sides achieved in over two decades.

Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS group took charge of the club as minority stakeholders, they have brought several changes to the day-to-day functioning of the organisation. One such reform was ending the work-from-home culture that prevailed at the club since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdowns. As per Cantona, employees coming back to the club will help establish the old family feeling that was lacking till now.

WHAT ERIC CANTONA SAID

Speaking to The Athletic, the 58-year-old said: "I believe in energy moving between people and they want to take that back at Manchester United, which is very important. When you meet the people, you see someone, you meet another woman and you say: ‘Hello, good morning’. It’s like family. I remember my time (at the club), we say hello to everybody. It was a big family, and the energy was all between us. Not only the players, not only the manager, not only the chairman but all the people who work at the club.

"Things changed since the Glazers arrived. Since Sir Alex Ferguson left. And it’s important to take that back. To have this energy. To have this feeling of: ‘We are part of the family, and we are here, I can speak to you, look in your eyes, I can shake your hand, looking in your eyes, I can feel you, I can get a sense of why you don’t really feel good, or why you did this or why you feel great today’. It’s important. It’s very important."

After playing two pre-season friendlies in Norway and Scotland, the Red Devils are all set to visit the United States where they will play three friendly matches against Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Betis.

After the boos, Warner returns home to love and adulation

David Warner spent most of this year’s England tour trying to ignore the verbal bile constantly directed his way. So there was not only relief but also revelation in the experience of a loud, supportive Adelaide Oval crowd on Sunday, as the exhortations of 16,268 spectators helped lift him to a first ever Twenty20 international century on his 33rd birthday. There had been queries as to exactly how Warner could be received in his first home match since the Newlands ban. Unlike Steven Smith, his public reputation hadn’t been bolstered by match-winning turns during the Ashes series. But from the moment he took to the middle, Warner was given plenty of adulation to feed off, and admitted that he had almost forgotten what it was like to get the support at home, his first appearance in more than 18 months.”It’s always fantastic to get that. You sort of sit back and watch highlights of other people’s packages and stuff, you forget how much it actually drives you when you’re out there,” Warner said. “We love the people’s support and we love the Australian crowds coming out and supporting us and we always try and put on a show for them.”But I don’t think they actually realise how much impact it has on us players while we are out there. I remember when I was supporting the [Sydney] Roosters in the Grand Final this year. When you’ve got that support behind the team or when you’re supporting someone else, it’s a massive boost, the confidence for us and for the other people out there playing.””Emotions were great. Another year older. Another game for Australia and coming out here in front of an Adelaide crowd. There’s no better place to play you know. You’ve always got a fantastic wicket, the curators are absolutely fantastic here. It’s a batting paradise. I absolutely love it out here.”The most notable element of Warner’s innings was the fact that in a T20I career dating back to 2009, he had never bettered the 89 he coshed against South Africa at the MCG on his storied international debut. More than a decade later, he was able to scamper a last ball single to go to three figures, a milestone that afforded him some light-hearted banter from Glenn Maxwell at the change of innings.Getty Images

“You don’t even actually realise until you get it. It wasn’t even on my mind. You actually forget that you don’t have one,” Warner said. “Maxi reminded me and said ‘welcome to the club’ which is quite funny. It’s just one of those things to contribute, come out and play you free-flowing game from the start. Obviously the couple of balls where a little bit here and there. You don’t get to face too many deliveries back to back when someone’s going off.”For me it’s about keeping a calm head and making sure that I bide my time a little bit and try and pick the gaps as much as I can and run hard. [Last over] bat on ball and I was thinking obscure field so for me you know what you’re going to get. It’s going to wide and pretty much, I don’t lap or anything like that so whatever comes into my mind I try to get it out of my head.”It was in my head but you’ve got to try and pick your gaps. I think in Australia with those fields, you only have to hit the gap hard and it can beat the fielder and then you can run two. You’re always thinking at the start of the over about what do we need. Obviously we had plenty on the board so you’re just trying to hit gaps.”It wasn’t just Warner who enjoyed his place in the sun. Aaron Finch, Maxwell and Australia’s bowlers all responded with a combination of skill and flair that completely confounded a modest Sri Lanka, suggesting that if the Australians stay focused, they can set-up more pageants of adulation in Brisbane and Melbourne this week.”Very good from us. We all set out to come out and try be positive with the bat,” Warner said. “I think the way forward is exactly that, where we try and set the tone at the top and then Maxi coming in and doing what he does. For once the plan actually came off. Obviously starting well and then Maxi coming in and doing what he does. And yeah, someone batting through. That was all in all a great batting performance and obviously the bowlers finished it off there.”

Beale must ditch Burstow to start electric Sunderland gem with Clarke

Sunderland are in Championship action at the Stadium of Light once again as they prepare to welcome Plymouth Argyle to Wearside this afternoon.

The Black Cats have only won one of their last five matches in all competitions and will be hoping to return to winning ways against Ian Foster's side today.

Michael Beale must now work hard to get his team firing again over the coming weeks and months in order to push back up to the top six to secure play-off football.

Sunderland are currently eighth in the Championship table and one point behind Hull in sixth, although the Tigers have one game in hand over them.

Michael Beale for Sunderland.

The Black Cats were held to a 1-1 draw by Middlesbrough last time out and Beale must now make at least one change to the starting XI from that match, with Nazariy Rusyn coming in for Mason Burstow at the top end of the pitch.

He could form an exciting link-up with Jack Clarke in the final third and the Chelsea loanee should be ditched to the bench, as his performances have left a lot to be desired so far this season.

Mason Burstow's struggles this season

The 20-year-old marksman has struggled throughout the campaign and has not proven himself to be a reliable option up front for Beale, or Tony Mowbray before him.

Burstow arrived from the Premier League side as a player with potential, having scored ten goals in 25 Premier League 2 matches last term, but he is yet to realise that on the pitch for the Black Cats.

As you can see in the table above, the young talent struggled badly against Middlesbrough last weekend as he led the line for Sunderland on Teeside.

The English striker lost all six of his duels throughout the game and failed to register a single effort on goal, which sums up his season so far.

Burstow has made 15 appearances and started ten matches in the Championship so far this season and contributed with one goal, from 1.33 xG, and one assist, from 0.37 xA.

Across those 15 games, the Chelsea loanee has lost a staggering 73% of his duels. This suggests that he is a huge liability out of possession as opposition players have found it far too easy to get the better of him in physical contests on a regular basis.

Mason Burstow.

The Sunderland number 11 currently ranks within the bottom 12% of Championship forwards this season for non-penalty goals (0.12) per 90, and the bottom 30% for Expected Assisted Goals (0.06) per 90.

These statistics show that the summer signing is below average as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his teammates among his positional peers.

His lack of consistent end product in front of goal also suggests that Burstow is not providing much in possession for the Black Cats to make up for his lightweight nature off the ball.

Why Sunderland must unleash Nazariy Rusyn

Beale must now ditch the Premier League loanee in order to unleash Rusyn through the middle of the pitch, after his impressive cameo last weekend.

The former Dynamo Kiev forward came on with 23 minutes left to play at the Riverside and secured a point for his team with a well-taken goal in the second half.

Nazariy Rusyn.

Jack Clarke switched the play over to the £9k-per-week dynamo and the substitute lashed a superb half-volley past Tom Glover to make it 1-1 on the day.

He also won two of his three (66%) ground duels off the bench, which meant that the Ukrainian whiz won more duels and registered more shots in 23 minutes than Burstow did in 67.

As you can see in the table above, Rusyn has been directly involved in more goals (three) than the Chelsea youngster (two) despite having started four fewer matches in the Championship.

The electric 25-year-old speedster, who has three goals in three U21 matches for the club, currently ranks within the top 24% of forwards in the division for non-penalty goals (0.46) per 90, and the top 35% for Expected Assisted Goals (0.13) per 90 this season.

These statistics suggest that Rusyn, who has also held his own in physical contests with a duel success rate of 51%, could offer far more than Burstow in the final third.

Jack Clarke's brilliance this season

Beale must unleash the striker alongside Sunderland star Jack Clarke, who has proven he has the quality to be a difference-maker on a consistent basis.

The former Tottenham Hotspur youngster has been an outstanding performer for the Black Cats in the Championship this season, and is the perfect winger for a striker to play alongside as he can offer a constant threat as both a scorer and a creator.

As you can see in the table above, Clarke has been the main man for Beale and Mowbray with his sensational performances at the top end of the pitch, with a constant stream of goals, assists, chances created, and dribbles completed to drive his team up the table.

The English magician may be frustrated that his 11 'big chances' created and 7.49 xA has only been rewarded with four assists, as those statistics suggest that his teammates have let him down in front of goal in the Championship.

This is why Beale must unleash Rusyn from the start as the exciting marksman has outperformed his xG in the division, whilst Burstow has underperformed slightly, and could be the dream forward to make the most of Clarke's creativity, which is exactly what he did with his goal against Middlesbrough from the winger's assist.

Therefore, the head coach should ditch Burstow and unleash Rusyn and Clarke together in the final third against Plymouth at the Stadium of Light this afternoon.

Rangers could sign "unbelievable" free agent worth millions this summer

Rangers could look to sign an "unbelievable" striker who will be worth millions this summer without spending a penny, according to an update from reliable journalist Mark Hendry.

Rangers transfer news

Philippe Clement is focused on inspiring his side to Scottish Premiership glory this season, but that doesn't mean he won't also be eyeing up new signings before the summer transfer window later in the year. Rangers continue to be linked with plenty of players despite the winter window's end, with talks reportedly held with Fluminense left-back Jefte, who was strongly backed to move to Ibrox in January.

Stoke City forward Tyrese Campbell has also emerged as a potential target for the Scottish giants, being seen as a similar player to Todd Cantwell.

Rumours of a move for Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland are refusing to go away, with the Scot a boyhood Rangers supporter who could like the idea of a move there at the end of the season.

Rangers could go for Oli McBurnie

According to Football Scotland's Hendry, Rangers could look at the signing of Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie this summer, snapping him up on a free transfer.

"He's a diehard Gers fan and is out of contract in the summer. The Scotland cap is a master at scoring in the English Championship with Sheffield United even if his Premier League record isn't quite as good, but for Scotland's Premiership you'd have to think the level would suit him closer.

"Has been a big money signing at previous clubs but if Gers could land the 27-year-old for nothing they could sell him in a year for a few million."

McBurnie could be a strong summer signing by Rangers, and the fact that he would come in as a free agent takes away some of the risk element, in terms of spending big on him. The 27-year-old has been lauded by teammate John Egan: "We went long to him early on and he was winning every header so why go away from what’s working. You know, he’s a big man, he’s game and he was unbelievable up top. I don’t know if they’ve given him the goal but he celebrated like it was his anyway."

McBurnie has scored 70 goals in his career to date, netting 11 times in 88 appearances in the Premier League, as well as enjoying spells with the likes of Swansea City, Bradford City and Barnsley.

At 27, the striker is in and around his peak, rather than being a free signing who is over the hill, and there is no reason why his physicality and eye for goal couldn't make him a real handful for Scottish Premiership defenders.

Rangers' 36-goal hero of yesteryear would be a fine Dessers replacement

Our Blast from the Past strand recalls a Rangers hero from 2004 who they’d love to call upon in the present day.

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 13, 2024

Shankland would still arguably be the ideal choice this summer, considering he is enjoying a superb season that sees him top the SPL scoring charts with 17 goals, but McBurnie represents a good alternative.
