"Unique" Arsenal player no longer in Arteta’s plans and could go on loan

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta appears set to axe a “unique” player from his squad in January, and there is a real possibility that he could head out on loan.

Arsenal's rumoured transfer plans for 2025

While the Premier League title hopefuls attempt to finally beat Man City to domestic glory, after just missing out on number one spot in each of the last two seasons, sporting director Edu Gaspar and his transfer team continue their work on upgrading Arteta’s options.

£40m star who "dreams" of joining Arsenal now "hesitating" on new contract

He’s apparently reluctant to extend.

Rumours have circulated recently linking Arsenal with a new striker in 2025, despite Edu and Arteta ultimately deciding not to sign towards the end of the summer.

After missing out on RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko earlier in the window, with an Arsenal offer rejected by the player, it is believed the Gunners could still go back in for Slovenia’s rising star.

Arsenal have already made contact over Sesko, as they plan a potential swoop for him next year, according to some reports, but he is by no means the only striker on their agenda. As well as Sesko, reports claim Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram, Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres and Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush are other strikers linked with moves to Arsenal.

Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran was a reported target for north London chiefs too, but the Colombian’s new deal could make a transfer that much more difficult to do, especially in January.

As well as potential new additions, the winter window represents an opportunity to offload players and make space. One player who seems destined for the chopping block is left-back Kieran Tierney.

Loan on the cards with Tierney "no longer" in Arsenal's plans

As per reliable journalist Charles Watts, writing via his Dailybriefing, Arsenal could allow Tierney to go out on loan in January once he recovers from a hamstring injury, which has kept him sidelined since Euro 2024.

“Had that injury not happened, I’m sure Tierney would have been playing for another club right now,” said Watts.

“That was certainly the plan anyway, following his loan spell with Real Sociedad last season. But the injury put an end to any chances of a move and the focus now is on the left-back getting himself back fully fit ahead of the January window.

“He’s not in Mikel Arteta’s plans anymore. That’s been clear for a long time and Tierney accepts that. There is no animosity there. He knows the club has moved on and that his qualities as a left-back are not what Arsenal need in the system that they play.

“He has been included in Arsenal’s Premier League squad for the season so he could play once fit, but I struggle to really see that happening. He will hope to get a move in January, probably on loan.”

Called a “unique” player by Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, the writing appears on the wall for Tierney, especially with Oleksandr Zinchenko, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber all capable of playing in his position.

Emery’s next Saka: Aston Villa want "one of the best players in the world"

Yesterday was a momentous day for Aston Villa as the club found out their opponents for the upcoming Champions League campaign.

Boss Unai Emery has transformed the club since his appointment back in November 2022, leading the club to the Europa Conference League last season, before finishing in the top four of the Premier League last season.

The Villans will face the likes of Bayern Munich and Juventus in the competition this season – an unthinkable feat before the appointment of the Spaniard a couple of years ago.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

The club have been in the market to strengthen the squad to cope with the added fixtures, with Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen the two highest-profile additions during the transfer window.

However, Emery’s side may be about to add another top talent to the first team, with rumours about a potential big-money addition arriving at Villa Park before the deadline at 11pm tonight.

Aston Villa transfer news

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke for Football Insider, Aston Villa are interested in signing Barcelona’s Brazilian winger Raphinha in an attempt to further improve the forward line.

Raphinha Barcelona

The 27-year-old arrived in Spain back in 2022 from Leeds United, but there have been rumours about his future all summer despite his impressive form last season that saw him register 21 goal contributions in all competitions.

The report states that the Villans could take advantage of the LaLiga side’s financial issues, with Raphinha considered as a replacement for Moussa Diaby, who departed for Saudi Arabia earlier this summer.

He’s previously been touted with a £50m transfer during the ongoing window, but is yet to receive an official proposal for his services, with any bid for the Brazilian star set to be a signal of intent from Emery’s side.

A move for the former Leeds star could allow the Villa boss to sign a new version of a player who has set the Premier League alight in recent years.

Why Raphinha could be Emery’s new Saka

During his time as Arsenal boss Emery handed winger Bukayo Saka his first-team debut at the Emirates, with the Englishman going on to achieve big things in North London.

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka

The 22-year-old enjoyed his best campaign in England’s top flight last season, registering 25 goal contributions in his 35 appearances – undoubtedly making him one of the most threatening attackers in the division.

However, a move for Raphinha – who Xavi dubbed "one of the best players in the world" – could allow the 52-year-old to have a new version of the England international, with the Brazilian a similar player to the Arsenal star, as per FBref.

When delving into their respective stats from 2023/24, the comparison is understandable, with the Barca star equalling or even bettering Saka in numerous key areas.

The “world-class” talent, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, may have registered fewer combined goal contributions last season, but he did manage more shots and shots on target per 90 – showcasing that he still has the ability to cause chaos in the final third.

He also completed more take-ons, whilst also matching the Arsenal star with his pass accuracy – demonstrating the talent he possesses with the ball at his feet in attacking areas.

Although £50m would be another huge fee spent by Villa, it would demonstrate the ambition of the club, with Emery able to attract an elite-level star to the West Midlands.

He could undoubtedly be an upgrade on the current crop of players in wide areas, allowing the club to have the greatest chance possible of replicating their successes from last season.

24 y/o Sunderland ace also unavailable for selection alongside Abdullahi

Another Sunderland player is set to miss his side’s Championship clash with Plymouth Argyle this weekend, according to manager Regis Le Bris.

Sunderland suffer Abdullahi injury blow

The Black Cats are looking to continue their pre-international break form on Saturday afternoon, as they make the trip to lowly Plymouth. Another win would make it five victories in a row for Le Bris’ side, which would further suggest that they are genuine promotion contenders this season.

Ahead of Sunderland’s long trip to the south west, they have been dealt a blow with the news that summer signing Ahmed Abdullahi will be out for the foreseeable future, potentially even missing as much as three months of action.

Le Bris himself has given an update on the situation, saying: “Ahmed is different because he will have surgery. He will probably have ten to 12 weeks off the pitch. It wasn’t so clear when we signed him. We need an expert to understand exactly what the problem was. Now, we know. The diagnosis is clear and it will be solved after this surgery.”

Sunderland will know the importance of keeping players fit throughout the season, with fitness woes having the potential to derail any campaign, and another individual is now also confirmed to be unavailable for the Plymouth game this weekend.

Sunderland also without Salis Abdul Samed vs Plymouth

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Thursday [via Sunderland AFC News], Le Bris said that new loan signing Salis Abdul Samed also won’t be available for selection for another week or 10 days, despite returning to training. “Salis is now training in the first part of the sessions, and he will be available for selection in eight or ten days.”

It makes sense for Le Bris not to rush Samed into the team too quickly, as he searches for full fitness in training, but it’s still a shame not to have him in contention to feature this weekend, even if it was from the substitutes’ bench.

The 24-year-old has the potential to be an important signing for Sunderland, coming in on a season-long loan deal from Lens, looking to give them an extra spark in midfield. He is a 19-cap Ghana international, which immediately stands out when assessing his pedigree, and he has also made 91 appearances in Ligue 1, showing that he can perform in one of Europe’s big five leagues, while Ghana manager Otto Addo has said of him:

“The way Abdul Salis was running and how he controlled the game was really, really impressive. But all the others did well too. To hold them with ten-men in their half and pin them was a massive thing. We had good possessions; we helped and supported each other in the right timing, especially Abdul Salis.”

Sunderland could soon sell “wonderful” ace for more than Jack Clarke

Hopefully, Samed’s debut won’t be too far away, perhaps coming at home to Middlesbrough next weekend (Saturday, 12.30pm), should he show enough progress in training in the coming days.

Report: Everton could complete £20m signing of "special" player this week

Everton could reportedly complete the signing of a "special" £20m player as soon as this week, although his current club are still holding firm.

Everton transfer news

Kalvin Phillips has emerged as a possible addition at Goodison Park this summer, with a replacement for Amadou Onana likely to be found as the Belgian closes in on a move to fellow Premier League side Aston Villa.

In fact, Phillips has even been endorsed by teammate and former Blues hero John Stones, who has waxed lyrical over the Englishman's ability on the ball being an underrated asset, saying: "Easily his range of passing and how he’s always in the right place on the pitch, his positioning and some of the passes he plays [are] outrageous."

West Ham midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Meanwhile, Colombia midfielder Richard Rios has also been linked with a move to Everton in the current transfer window, although Leicester City are reportedly ahead of them in the race, acting as a nuisance to Sean Dyche. He could join Napoli winger Jesper Lindstrom as another addition, in what could be turning into a positive summer.

In fact, the latter has emerged as someone to come in alongside Leeds United youngster Wilfried Gnonto, who the Blues have seemingly shown interest in all summer long.

Everton could sign "special" player this week

According to a fresh update from TEAMtalk, Everton could now complete the signing of Gnonto from Leeds as early as this week, with three new additions potentially even on the cards.

The Italian remains keen on joining the Blues having failed to earn promotion from the Championship last season, and they are willing to pay £20m for his services. That being said, Leeds are holding out for £25m, so it may not be easy to get a deal over the line.

However, it is thought that talks are progressing well, while it has been stated that a deal where an extra £5m is payable through add-ons could be what Leeds require to shake hands with Everton.

Gnonto may have been outshone in many ways by Crysencio Summerville last season, with the Dutchman being named the Championship's best player, but the former is an excellent young talent in his own right – one who already has 13 caps to his name for Italy, which is no mean feat at the age of 20.

Meanwhile, former Leeds coach Michael Skubala made it clear what he thinks of the young winger in the past, saying: "He’s a great lad, he’s a special player. He’s a credit to Leeds, he’s a credit to himself and he’s a really nice player to work with."

Should the Whites hold out for £25m, Everton could still get a good deal given Gnonto's age and the fact that he could be worth far more than that over time, giving Dyche a hugely exciting young player in his ranks in the process.

He is still a raw footballer, so Blues supporters would have to accept that his end product could remain erratic to begin with, but he has already shown that he can handle the Premier League, registering six goal contributions in 24 appearances.

Offer ready: Arsenal target perfect Saka rival in "extraordinary" £42m ace

Two games in, and it would be fair to say that Arsenal's pre-season preparations are going rather well thus far.

A team full of youngsters drew and then beat a nearly full-strength Bournemouth side on penalties last week, and then a slightly stronger team ran out 2-1 victors against Manchester United in the early hours of Sunday morning thanks to goals from Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.

While a good portion of the squad are now back together, a number of the Spanish and English contingents, including club poster boy Bukayo Saka, are still on holiday due to their run to the final of the Euros.

The Hale End superstar has barely had a moment's rest over the last few years, so signing some genuine competition is a priority this summer, a priority that, based on recent reports, Edu Gaspar and Co are tackling.

Arsenal transfer news

According to the Sunday edition of Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness, Arsenal have reignited their interest in Barcelona ace Raphinha.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

The report claims that the Gunners are prepared to make an offer worth around €50m – £42m – for the Brazilian winger this summer. However, the report also reveals that Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal have already made a €65m offer, which converts to about £55m.

Yet, the good news for the Gunners is that the winger has no interest in moving to the Middle Eastern league at the moment.

Raphinha Barcelona

Getting the former Leeds United star out of Barcelona this summer could prove costly, but given his talent and Arsenal's need for a Saka rival, it may well be worth it.

How Raphinha compares to Saka

So, if Arsenal are going to splash north of £40m on Raphinha to be the perfect competition for Saka this summer, he'll need to be able to come into the side and maintain a high level of performance on the right, even if there is a slight drop-off.

In which case, how does he compare to the Englishman? Well, when it comes to their output last season, the Hale End superstar predictably comes out on top. However, the Brazilian's numbers are still impressive and suggest he'd be able to perform at a high level for Arteta when needed.

For example, in his 47 appearances for the North Londoners last season, the Ealing-born gem scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.38 games – simply world-class.

In comparison, the "extraordinary" Barça ace, as dubbed by former manager Xavi, scored ten goals and provided 13 assists in 37 appearances for the Blaugrana, equating to a goal involvement on average every 1.60 games.

So, with it clear that the former Leeds star wouldn't be a dramatic downgrade in terms of pure output, how does he hold up when we look at their underlying numbers?

Interestingly, while the Porto Alegre-born dynamo once again comes out a close second, he does emerge victorious in several important metrics, such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, shots and shots on target, passes into the final third, shot and goal-creating actions and successful take-ons, all per 90.

Ultimately, given Saka's incredible ability, mentality, and consistency, it will be tough for Arsenal to find another rightwinger who is good enough to seriously challenge him for a place in the starting lineup. However, based on his output and underlying numbers, Raphinha might well be the club's best bet for a winger who could get close enough.

Virat Kohli on farmers' protest: 'Briefly discussed it in team meeting, everyone expressed their opinion'

He was asked whether farmers were finding space in conversations in India’s dressing room

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Feb-2021A day after India’s cricket establishment joined a Twitter conversation on the ongoing farmers’ protest in the country, captain Virat Kohli said the issue has been discussed within the India team. He said everyone had, in a team meeting, “expressed their views” on the issue, which has dominated national headlines for several weeks.Kohli, speaking to the media before the first Test against England, did not disclose details of the conversation. “We briefly discussed it in the team meeting. Everyone expressed their opinion, that’s about it,” he said.Kohli, and many of India’s leading cricket figures – including Sachin Tendulkar and team coach Ravi Shastri – tweeted on the issue on Wednesday, and his statements on Thursday were in response to a question on that. He was asked whether, given those tweets, farmers were finding space in conversations in the dressing room. The tweets, which were all posted within a few hours of each other on Wednesday evening, had a common theme of calling for unity among Indians. Most of the tweets, and those at the same time by Bollywood actors and other celebrities, bore common hashtags: #IndiaTogether and #IndiaAgainstPropaganda.

They followed a tweet by the singer Rihanna, who had linked to a CNN report on the farmers’ protests and asked, “Why aren’t we talking about this?” It sparked off a widespread response in India, the theme of which was that outsiders had no place in the national political discourse. There were two kinds of tweets; those by Tendulkar, Shikhar Dhawan, Gautam Gambhir – now a BJP member of Parliament – and Anil Kumble, among others, essentially called for “external forces” to keep out of an internal issue. Tweets by Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shastri referenced farmers and their importance in Indian life. Some cricketers took a sharply different line. Bengal and India batsman Manoj Tiwary’s tweet was one of the sharpest, with a visual of a hand pulling strings and the caption: “When I was a kid, I never saw a puppet show. It took me 35 years to see one”.

Also taking a different perspective was the Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad bowler Sandeep Sharma. His tweet – subsequently deleted – used a screenshot criticising the reaction to Rihanna’s comments and added his own comments. “By this logic”, he said, “no one should care about each other because every situation is someone’s internal affair.”Former India allrounder Irfan Pathan referred to the outrage in India over the death of George Floyd last year, with the hashtag “justsaying”.BCCI president Sourav Ganguly retweeted Tendulkar’s and Kumble’s tweets.

The farmers’ agitation has been on for several months, after the federal government passed a set of laws last September that would change some of the mechanisms of procurement and minimise government involvement in favour of private or corporate traders. The protests were originally located in the northern states of Punjab and Haryana, seen as the country’s granary; for more than two months, though, thousands of farmers have been protesting in campsites around New Delhi, the national capital. The protests – largely driven by farmers’ unions – have evoked sharp reactions from both sides: the government and its supporters, and those who sympathise with the farmers’ cause. The issue has also attracted global responses, from Rihanna, the environmental activist Greta Thunberg, and the government of Canada, which has a large population of expats from this region.

West Ham submit bid to sign Duran alternative who’s better than En-Nesyri

It has been pleasing to see West Ham United show proactivity in the transfer market this summer, instead of biding time and being forced into reactive moves after one disappointing development or another.

Technical director Tim Steidten clearly held some positive talks at the maiden stage with Julen Lopetegui, who has replaced David Moyes, for teenage winger Luis Guilherme has been signed for £25.5m and centre-back Max Kilman has been welcomed to the rearguard for £40m.

Wolves captain Max Kilman celebrates

More is yet to come. The fact remains that signing a striker is the east London outfit's most pressing concern, and if reports are to be believed, the transfer cannon has been levelled in that direction.

West Ham bid for new striker

West Ham have submitted a bid to sign FC Metz striker Georges Mikautadze, who was one of the standout performers for Georgia during their impressive Euro 2024 campaign.

It was Football Insider with the reveal, though they do stress that interest is thick and it would take an offer of €25m (roughly £21m) to convince the Ligue 1 outfit to sell.

With a throng of suitors eyeing up the dynamic striker, Steidten better kick on with negotiations to ensure that Mikautadze moves to the London Stadium.

The Georgian isn't the only striker the Irons could bring to the capital this summer, however, with Aston Villa's Jhon Duran a player said to be on their radar. Fabrizio Romano has even suggested that personal terms have been agreed with the player.

What Mikautadze would bring to West Ham

Rumour has it that Danny Ings is heading back to Southampton, with the respective Premier League sides currently haggling over a £6m figure. The 31-year-old hasn't exactly been brilliant for the Hammers, scoring four goals from 52 appearances.

Danny Ings for West Ham

Moreover, Divin Mubama has left the club after his contract expired and Michail Antonio is now 34, starting just 21 Premier League matches last year as he battled against injuries.

Mikautadze, 23, would be a brilliant addition to shape the frontline with fresh clay, ranking among the top 11% of centre-forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries and the top 4% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

The Georgian ace was in prolific showing in the French top flight last year, scoring 13 goals and supplying four assists across just 20 appearances, averaging 1.1 key passes, 2.1 dribbles and 4.3 successful duels per game to boot, as per Sofascore.

If there have been concerns in the past concerning how the nimble star's skills would translate to life on the major stage, he has dispelled such notions with his talismanic efforts in Germany over the past month, hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig as the "living legend" of his nation.

Georgia, a nation with less than half the population of London, earned the loftiest of laurels during their historic run to the round of 16, defeating Portugal to rise from the group stage for the first time in their history. They achieved this illustrious feat not through regimented pragmaticism, but through the breezy, free-flowing football of an awe-inspiring side.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia deservedly takes the plaudits as Georgia's prized possession, but Mikautadze proved that he is a figure of similar importance, notching three goals and an assist across four outings.

It might not be the easiest of deals to engineer, with Monaco pressing to complete a deal and a host of further suitors lingering, but West Ham will hope that the allure of the Premier League and the promise of a starring role as the Irons spearhead could tempt the 5 foot 9 forward to make the move to London.

Given Mikautadze's athletic ability, he must be prioritised as the top target to fight for a place as United's focal frontman, and Lopetegui must discard interest in Sevilla's Youssef En-Nesyri to get the move over the line.

How Mikautadze compares to En-Nesyri

As per Spanish reports in June, West Ham have been considering a swoop for their long-term target, who has been transfer-listed for an affordable €20m (£17m) by the Spanish club with his contract set to expire in one year.

Sevilla strikerYoussef En-Nesyri.

The 27-year-old has been described as a "pure goalscorer" by Kulig and indeed would arrive off the back of a sharp scoring season, posting 20 goals across 41 fixtures in all competitions.

He's an imposing target man at 6 foot 3 but not quite the most mobile of players, and as the chart below will show, the Morocco international is one of the lowest-ranking forwards regarding his passing metrics.

[FBCharts] Youssef En-Nesyri-1

Lopetegui will strive to implement more of a passing focus at West Ham than that of his predecessor, with a balanced but flexible structure opening up fluid passing play.

Mikautadze would be the perfect player to add to the mix in this regard, not least because of his crisp and creative emphasis. The Georgia star, further to the point, is progressive and would be able to effectively influence attacking sequences through his driven, penetrative approach into the final third.

Furthermore, the electrifying support of stars such as Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and the earlier-mentioned Guilherme makes for the perfect, balanced frontline that would see Mikautadze thrive.

While West Ham have already been active in the transfer market this summer, there's no hiding from the fact that signing a new centre-forward is the priority.

Mikautadze could be the poster boy for years to come, with so much yet to give but so much already showcased. Steidten and Co need to get this one completed with dispatch.

Arsenal can forget Gyokeres by signing £75m England star

How do Arsenal win the Premier League next season? That will be the largest question on Mikel Arteta's mind this summer.

The Gunners are getting closer, reducing the gap to Manchester City from five points in 2022/23 to just two points in 2023/24. They were desperately near to ending that 20-year wait for a Premier League title.

You can look back at certain moments during the campaign and wonder what if. What if they had beaten Aston Villa during the run-in? Well, what if they'd beaten Man City during the same run of games too?

The fact of the matter is that Arsenal probably did just about all they could to win the title. They had the best defence in the land and were scoring goals at will, smacking six past West Ham, five past Burnley and another half a dozen past Sheffield United.

Is scoring more goals the answer, then? It feels ridiculous to say yes after the facts listed above but they still found the net fewer times than the might of Pep Guardiola's team.

So, how about a new striker?

The strikers Arsenal could sign

RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko was linked rather relentlessly with a move to Arsenal a few weeks ago but he is now set to stay in Germany and sign a new deal.

The next target they have moved onto is believed to be Viktor Gyokeres of Portuguese club Sporting.

Gyokeres had a wonderful campaign in Lisbon, scoring 43 goals across all competitions with some reports even suggesting the Gunners are closing in on his acquisition.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

That said, with such a hefty price tag attached to him – £76m upfront reportedly – there are questions to be asked about whether the club need a new centre-forward.

After all, Kai Havertz shone as a false nine during the back end of last campaign, contributing to 15 goals in 18 matches from that role.

So, would landing Gyokeres, someone who has never played in the Premier League before be a gamble? Indeed.

Perhaps raiding a top-flight club again, a successful tactic during the Edu and Arteta reign would be a good idea.

How does Ollie Watkins sound, everyone?

Why Arsenal should sign Ollie Watkins instead

Let's get things straight. The idea of Aston Villa selling their main man ahead of a season in the Champions League is unlikely.

However, the England international has been on the club's radar for a while now and is a self-confessed Gooner. Perhaps the stars will finally align this summer?

Aston-Villa-Emery-Watkins-Champions-League

Speaking in 2020 when he was still a Brentford player, he said: "That’s the dream, to play for Arsenal one day. But, you know, it’s a long shot."

The latest we heard on any move was back in March when reports suggested that Arsenal had made an approach to sign Watkins, a player reportedly valued around the £75m mark.

So, he could cost the same amount as Gyokeres this summer, but they'd be getting a Premier League-proven player who is in the best form of his life.

Speaking on Monday Night Football last season, presenter Dave Jones suggested that he was delivering "Thierry Henry style numbers".

Why did he say that? Well, the Villa star was as good in front of goal as he was creatively.

Via Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

Last season, Watkins ended up finishing with 19 goals and 13 assists in the league. It's not quite Henry levels but the sheer rate he was scoring and creating with was supremely impressive.

As a result, he walked away with the Playmaker Award for the most assists in the English top flight, not bad indeed for someone whose main job is to actually score the goals.

Of course, that ability to find the net with such regularity would no doubt pique the interest of Arteta but he likes his players to be able to offer more than just one skill.

Watkins' ability to feed others and act selflessly for the team is a huge plus point and someone who would certainly play into the hands of players like Bukayo Saka and even Havertz.

Indeed, it would not be unreasonable to think that the German could actually play up front with the Villa star, such are their traits.

Ollie Watkins for Aston Villa

Gyokeres may well have registered nine league assists himself last season but it would be a risk given the quality of the opponent he was facing.

That's no disrespect to the top-flight in Portugal but Watkins has already proven he can run riot against Premier League defences.

A move, of course, is difficult to see happening but wouldn't it be an exceptional capture? A boyhood Gunner leading the line for Arsenal certainly sounds nice.

Leeds must bin Elland Road dud who earns 2x more than Summerville

Leeds United know, as well as having to deal with outgoings involving their stars this summer, that the off-season also presents a great opportunity to get rid of some deadwood still lurking in the camp.

Jack Harrison looks to be nearing to a loan move back to Everton for a second successive year to the relief of everyone at Elland Road, whilst Daniel Farke and Co now turn their attention to the future of Maximilian Wober in Leeds white.

Only featuring for Leeds briefly during their relegation campaign down from the Premier League, having only been bruised by the experience slightly by joining mid-way through the season, Wober will still be one the Championship side will look to offload soon.

That could prove to be a tricky sale, however, when taking into account his recent horror-show performance against France in the ongoing Euros tournament.

What the future hold for Wober future at Leeds

Roy Keane, speaking on ITV at half-time of Austria's eventual 1-0 defeat to Didier Deschamps' outfit, was less than impressed with Wober's own-goal rippling the back of his nation's net, labelling it as 'really poor' defending, with his stock falling as a direct consequence of this bad slice of luck.

Wober was equally shaky at points during his brief spell at Leeds, only tallying up two clean sheets from the 16 appearances he managed for the West Yorkshire side, before moving on to Borussia Mönchengladbach on loan in the wake of relegation.

Wober had shone playing out in the Bundesliga last season, away from battling it out for Farke's men back in England, with two goals and three assists mustered up, but Leeds' reported asking price of £12.5m to try and make this deal a permanent one has become a stumbling block for the German side.

Leeds could do with some additional defensive reinforcements next season with Joe Rodon no longer present, meaning Wober coming back and fighting for his spot again could be handy, but his previous hefty wage for Leeds will also be a concern, with the Austrian dud earning two times more than Crysencio Summerville when playing in the Premier League.

Wober's wage at Leeds

As per Capology, Wober was earning a handsome £35k-per-week in the top-flight for Leeds during 2022/23, whilst Summerville, before his immense Championship campaign, was pocketing far less at £15k-per-week.

Wober's weekly salary during the relegation season would still see him earn more than the electric Dutchman in the here and now, who remains on a meagre £15k-per-week salary, despite the Championship Player of the Year winner amassing a ridiculous 31 goal contributions, only for his side to fall at the final hurdle in the play-off final.

3. Junior Firpo

4. Daniel James

5. Maximilian Wober (22/23)

£35k-per-week

As Summerville now eyes a move back up to the Premier League without Leeds, Wober could be staring the end of his own career at Elland Road in the face, on the contrary, with the Austrian defender only £15k-per-week off entering into the top five earners in Farke's camp, despite being pushed to one side on loan.

Harrison, who is nearing a return to Goodison Park, ended up earning an eye-watering £90k-per-week when he was still an important cog in West Yorkshire, with Leeds wanting to get him off their books permanently down the line.

Whilst Harrison moves away, Leeds could be stuck with Wober if they can't find a suitor willing to take him on, with the Austria international going down as a major flop in the transfer market for the Whites, when purchased for a bumper £11m just last year.
