Jermaine Beckford buzzing after "exciting" Leeds update shared by the 49ers

Former Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford has been left buzzing after an “exciting” update was shared by the 49ers Enterprises.

Leeds summer signings and upcoming fixtures

The Whites and manager Daniel Farke were busy over the summer, bringing in eight new additions after losing a number of important players, including star trio Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter. Joe Rodon, Largie Ramazani, Jayden Bogle, Ao Tanaka, Isaac Schmidt and Alex Cairns all arrived on permanent transfers, whereas Manor Solomon and Joe Rothwell joined on loan.

On the pitch, Leeds are currently two points better off than they were at this stage last season, with Saturday’s 2-0 win at Cardiff City seeing Ramazani score and shine on what was his first start for the Whites.

Farke’s side currently sit in the playoff positions, but after last season’s Wembley heartbreak against Southampton, will be keen to earn automatic promotion this time around.

The games come thick and fast for Leeds over the coming months, but away from the pitch, plans are seemingly in place from the 49ers Enterprises when it comes to expanding Elland Road.

Leeds announce Elland Road plan to increase capacity

On Monday, Leeds revealed their next steps to enhance Elland Road, looking to take the capacity from 37,645 to around 53,000. The club stated the key ambitions for the stadium upgrade on their official website:

Modernise and improve stadium capacity from 37,645 to c.53,000 seats Significant increase to general admission seating, which at present would make Elland Road the seventh largest club stadium in the country A core architectural design objective is to maintain and enhance the unique atmosphere Phased approach to construction to minimise loss of seating capacity during the project Bring Elland Road in line with UEFA Category 4 status, to be amongst the elite in European stadia Expert team, combining global stadium experience with local specialist knowledge, assembled to deliver artist’s impressions and planning submission

Chairman Paraag Marathe said: “We recognise how important Elland Road is to the Leeds United fans and the wider community. The opportunity to refresh a century-old stadium, coupled with the legacy of Leeds United, is unprecedented.

“Our plans reinforce our commitment to the long-term success of the club and I am excited that we are going to be able to welcome thousands more supporters to every game, in a stadium that retains the unique atmosphere of Elland Road. We look forward to sharing our plans with supporters and the local community for their input.”

Reacting to the news, former forward Beckford was upbeat and took to X to say: “This will be exciting! Imagine the atmosphere when 50k+ are singing at full pelt! I can’t wait!! MOT”

Lost the ball 8x: Arsenal star just dropped a 4/10 display for his country

After an unbeaten start to the new Premier League season, Arsenal didn't particularly need an international break to get in the way of things. Nor did many top-flight teams saying that.

The Gunners began their conquest for glory with wins over Wolves and Aston Villa but Brighton halted them in their tracks courtesy of Declan Rice's controversial red card.

Rice will, of course, now miss the big clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon. With Mikel Merino also missing after suffering a shoulder injury during his first training session, it's safe to say Mikel Arteta is going to have to rustle up a cunning plan to defeat Arsenal's fierce rivals.

They will, however, be buoyed by a new option for their attack. Following his deadline day loan move from Chelsea, Raheem Sterling has had nearly two weeks' worth of training to get used to the style of things in the north side of London.

It's unlikely he's given a start straight from the off but we'd all love a derby day debut goal, wouldn't we?

That said, they will have to try and achieve that without skipper Martin Odegaard.

The latest on Martin Odegaard's injury

On Monday evening Arsenal fans across the globe sat there rocking back and forth. The unthinkable had happened; a big injury blow during what has to be described as a rather pointless international break.

We're being a bit petty here, but for Odegaard to pick an injury ahead of a vital week of action for Arteta's side is incredibly frustrating.

They face Spurs on Sunday, then get their Champions League quest underway in midweek before facing Manchester City the weekend after.

So, what's the prognosis on the Norwegian? Well, during his nation's win over Austria early this week he was on the end of a rough challenge that resulted in the midfielder's ankle twisting nastily.

Initially thought to have a 50/50 chance of making the game it's now unlikely he'll play any part with suggestions that he could be absent for the next three to four weeks of action.

That's according to Norway team doctor Ola Sand, who said: "Such ankle injuries often take at least three weeks. Anything other than that is just a bonus and then it can take longer. What we have so far obtained from the MRI examination in London is that there is probably no fracture in the ankle.

"Arsenal are almost certain there is no breach, but this may still take some time. In the event of a fracture, we are talking about being out of action for six weeks plus."

So, it's not great news over the international break, really. Rice may have scored against the Republic of Ireland but with Riccardo Calafiori also nursing a knock, Arteta is unlikely to be too pleased.

There was also a slightly concerning display from Brazil's Gabriel Magalhaes.

Gabriel's 4/10 performance for Brazil

Now a mainstay at the heart of the Brazilian defence, as well as for his club side, the centre-back is slowly but surely making himself a major part of his nation's team.

However, an unconvincing display during the South American country's 1-0 defeat to Paraguay is unlikely to do him too many favours in the battle to impress supporters.

Indeed, he was arguably at fault for the only goal of the game. A ball came into the box from the left channel and truth be told, his headed clearance was weak and not really away from danger.

The Paraguayan's pounced on Gabriel's misfortune with Diego Gomez picking up possession on the edge of the box before bending a luscious finish beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

What did the stats say? Well, on that front it wasn't an awful night.

The media didn't really agree with that impressive assessment though with one Brazilian outlet, Zerho Hora, handing him a 4.5/10 match rating. Some people are tough to please, eh?

Arsenal fans will no doubt hope that this was a minor blip and Gabriel will be at the top of his game when he resumes his partnership with William Saliba this weekend.

Breakthrough: £100k-p/w ace "on the verge" of joining Chelsea in £43m deal

Chelsea and Todd Boehly are moving ever closer to another addition at Stamford Bridge this summer, according to reports, with the Blues having made a breakthrough over one of their targets in the last 48 hours.

Chelsea lose Premier League opener

New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was handed the toughest possible debut in the Stamford Bridge dugout as his side hosted Manchester City in their Premier League opener on Sunday.

He named a side that didn't include any of his new signings from the summer window, though long-term absentees Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku and Wesley Fofana were all handed starts.

In what was for much of the game an even fight, a first half goal from Erling Haaland was added to by former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic late on, with the Croatian running past both Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez (who Chelsea spent £230m on to replace Kovacic) before firing past Robert Sanchez to hand City a 2-0 win.

Not just Sterling: £50m star will likely now never play for Chelsea again

Raheem Sterling was not included in the Chelsea squad to face his former employers.

ByMatt Dawson Aug 19, 2024

Despite the result, it was a positive performance from the Blues and Maresca was happy with what he saw.

"The performance was good and we competed against the best team in the world. We played well and created chances. The biggest difference was inside the box and how they managed the ball at the end, they are a master. We don't like to lose games but the performance was good", he explained after the game.

"We can for sure improve many things, we've been together for just six weeks. At the same moment, we liked to analyse the game and we tried to play football and create chances. It's not easy but we did well."

Now, in the final days of the window, the Chelsea boss is set to be handed another player to try and fit into his already bloated squad.

Chelsea on the verge of signing "special" star

That comes with reports in Spain revealing that the Blues are 'on the verge' of re-signing Joao Felix on a permanent deal this summer. The Portuguese attacker, of course, has already spent time at Stamford Bridge. He joined the club on loan from Atletico Madrid back in January 2023, going on to make 20 appearances across all competitions despite being sent off on his debut.

Though he has struggled to find a permanent home in recent seasons, he remains a top talent and retains much of what caused Alvaro Morata to dub him "special" back in 2022.

"The truth is that Joao has a special talent," the former Blues forward explained after helping Atleti to a win over Getafe.

Felix still has five years left to run on his £100,000 a week deal at the Wanda Metropolitano but it was always likely he would depart this summer after falling out with Diego Simeone, and Chelsea have pounced.

According to reports in Spain [via Sport Witness], he is now "on the verge" of joining Chelsea as part of a deal that will allow Conor Gallagher to head the other way. The Blues will receive £34m for Gallagher, while the report claims that they will pay £43m to sign Felix permanently.

Should he join as planned, the 24-year-old will become yet another player for Maresca to try and fit into his squad, having notably left Raheem Sterling out of the Premier League opener and only utilising £54m signing Pedro Neto from the bench.

Shreyas Iyer undergoes surgery on left shoulder

Shreyas Iyer has undergone a scheduled surgery to his left shoulder, which he partially dislocated when he landed awkwardly after putting in a dive in the field during the first ODI of India’s home series against England last month. In a tweet, Iyer called the surgery “a success”, and promised to “be back in no time”.Once the severity of the injury became clear, Iyer had to be ruled out of the IPL, where he was the designated captain of the Delhi Capitals. Rishabh Pant has since been handed the reins of the team, which plays its first match of IPL 2021 on Saturday, in Mumbai against the Chennai Super Kings.

Iyer had also signed a deal with Lancashire to be a part of their Royal London Cup campaign, and was scheduled to join the team on June 15, after the IPL. There has been no update on that front, since Iyer’s expected recovery time isn’t known yet. The last comment on the subject from the county had come in the form of Paul Allott, the Lancashire director of cricket, tweeting on March 30, “When that [surgery] has taken place, we’ll reassess and have a much clearer idea of where he’s going to be fitness wise. But everybody’s got their fingers crossed that he’ll be available for us.”This was the third time since IPL 2020 that Iyer had hurt the left shoulder, having also hurt it during the ODI series in Australia. He was seen grimacing and rolling on the turf at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, clutching the shoulder. After brief medical attention, Iyer was rushed out for scans, which revealed he had “subluxation” (partial dislocation) of the shoulder.Indications that the injury was more serious than initially thought came when Parth Jindal, the Capitals’ co-owner, tweeted a couple of days later saying he was “devastated and gutted”, wishing Iyer a “quick recovery” as India “needs you in the T20 World Cup”.Iyer was appointed captain of the Delhi franchise (it was called Delhi Daredevils then) during IPL 2018. The team had won only one of their first six matches that season, which led to Gautam Gambhir, the captain at the time, to step down. Iyer, who was then 23 years old, was identified as his successor, three years after the franchise had bought him as an uncapped player. It has been a successful run for the franchise and Iyer since then, as the team that had gone six seasons – 2013 to 2018 – without reaching the playoffs (or even getting anywhere close to it), finished third and second in 2019 and 2020.Iyer played a big part with the bat for the Capitals in their run to the final in 2020, played in the UAE, as he totalled 519 runs from 17 innings – making him the fourth-highest run-getter in the tournament – at an average of 34.60 and strike rate of 123.27.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic did get onto the field in a game that fellow countrymen Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie and Tim Weah also graced, but was restricted to a 20-minute cameo role. He was unable to make a match-winning contribution at San Siro as the game in question finished goalless.

  • WHAT FONSECA SAID

Milan boss Paulo Fonseca was quizzed afterwards on why Pulisic was left out of his starting XI, with the Portuguese tactician telling reporters: “He came from the national team with a problem, yesterday and today we tried but he wasn’t well. I couldn’t let him play more. I took the risk. It didn’t seem like the right time to change players on the fly, we made some substitutions that didn’t have an impact.”

A bola, porém, apenas saiu perto do gol.

Georgemy agarrou e impediu.

POLÊMICA!

Fábio Alemão segue causando polêmicas no Operário.

Man City eye move for their own Rice in 5ft 11 gem who wants to move

Manchester City have yet to make a signing this summer as Pep Guardiola plots how he can get his team firing on all fronts in a bid to reclaim the Champions League trophy they won in 2023.

While winning a fourth successive Premier League crown – making history in the process – is a wonderful achievement, it is not enough to satiate the City faithful.

Could they be about to deliver another blow to Manchester United, but this time in the transfer market as opposed to on the pitch?

Manchester City eye up swoop for Barcelona star

According to reports in Spain (via Football365), Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong ‘wants to join’ Man City this summer.

Manchester United transfer target Frenkie de Jong in action for Barcelona.

It is no secret that Erik ten Hag is a keen admirer of the Dutchman, with reports from Spain (again via Football365) that the manager was lining up a swoop to bring both him and Matthijs de Ligt to Old Trafford during the transfer window in a bid to bolster his squad.

It looks as though City may now have the upper hand as they eye a swoop for the 5 foot 11 maestro, especially with Champions League football on offer at the Etihad, before the end of the window.

De Jong would be an excellent signing for the Premier League champions and could emerge as Guardiola’s own version of Arsenal star Declan Rice.

How Frenkie De Jong compares to Declan Rice

The current Arsenal sensation has gone from strength to strength since making the move from West Ham United to the Gunners last summer.

He finished last season with a 91% pass success rate while ranking first in their squad for tackles per game (2.2) and signing someone with similar sort of qualities could allow Guardiola to strengthen his midfield.

The Englishman is currently the tenth-most comparable player to the Barcelona gem via FBref and last season, they registered similar statistics with regard to shot-creating actions (3.3 vs 2.79), percentage of challenges won (42.1% vs 56.1%), successful take-on percentage (54.2% vs 45.7%) and aerial duel percentage (57.5% vs 47.6%), demonstrating how close they are across several attacking and defensive metrics for their respective clubs.

De Jong was hailed by his former manager at Barcelona, Xavi, in 2023, saying: “Frenkie de Jong is one of the best midfielders in the world right now.

“He’s at spectacular level, he’s playing at incredible level — he gives us a lot, I’m so happy with Frenkie.”

A year later, the 27-year-old currently ranks in the top 5% when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues for pass success rate (91.9%), progressive passes (8.70), and progressive carries (3.24) per 90, showing exactly what he could bring to a City team who love controlling and dictating games under Guardiola.

florian-neuhaus-frenkie-de-jong-west-ham

Much will depend on the fee Barcelona expects to receive for one of their prized assets, especially considering he still has two years remaining on his current contract at the Catalan giants.

Should he really want to move to Manchester, then the manager must go all out and bring him to England this summer to land his own Rice in the middle of the park to play alongside the likes of Rodri, Kevin de Bruyne, and Bernardo Silva across all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign.

Reports from earlier this month claimed Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned Wrexham are in discussions to enter the Welsh League Cup, alongside the likes of Cardiff City, Newport County and Swansea City. This move could open a pathway for Wrexham to qualify for Europe, as the winner of the Welsh League Cup secures a spot in the UEFA Conference League.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to the Daily Mail, the Football Association of Wales is backing the proposal. Influential members of the FAW believe that adding Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and Wrexham to the Welsh League Cup would boost investment throughout Welsh football. Wrexham, with their growing fanbase thanks to Reynolds and McElhenney's support – especially in the United States – would likely bring significant attention to the competition, increasing its visibility and appeal.

Teddy Sheringham also managed it in 1995 and only Clive Allen scored seven, although he did so in the 1980s.
