Qalandars win from 50 for 7 thanks to Raza fifty and Rauf three-for

By the end, they laid claim to the record of joint-lowest total successfully defended in a PSL match in Pakistan.

Sikandar Raza laps one during his unbeaten 34-ball 71•PCB

Defending champions Lahore Qalandars staged a magnificent recovery from 50 for 7 to win by 17 runs at Gaddafi Stadium and keep Quetta Gladiators rooted to the bottom of the PSL table. Sikandar Raza was their hero with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 71 from 34 balls, before the Qalandars attack recovered from a poor start to comprehensively throttle the chase, led by Haris Rauf’s 3 for 22. By the end, they laid claim to the record of joint-lowest total (148) successfully defended in a PSL match in Pakistan.Qalandars were in deep trouble after being inserted, but were given something to bowl at by Raza’s first PSL half-century. The Zimbabwe allrounder struck eight fours and three sixes in a stunning counterattack, putting on an eighth-wicket stand worth 69 off 6.3 overs with Rashid Khan and helping to set Gladiators a target of 149 despite being bowled out early.Gladiators were seemingly cruising as they reached 53 for 1, with Yasir Khan falling to Rauf from the last ball of the powerplay. Will Smeed had struck six crisp fours in 32 off 25 balls to help get his side ahead of the asking rate, but after he fell lbw to Rashid in the seventh over, Gladiators began a slow-motion collapse that saw them add 11 runs in five overs while losing three wickets. It got worse for Gladiators when Martin Guptill launched David Wiese down the throat of deep midwicket, with the required rate crossing 10 per over. Odean Smith and Mohammad Nawaz were dismissed by Rauf as the home side took control, conceding just five boundaries in the second half of the innings and ensuring the victory was all but secure with an over to spare. For the first quarter of the match, it seemed nailed on that the Lahore fans would go home disappointed. Qalandars lost a wicket in the opening over of their innings, Umaid Asif marking his Gladiators debut with a direct hit that caught Fakhar Zaman short; Umaid’s night then got better when he struck with his third ball, taking a simple return catch after Mirza Baig top-edged a pull. Naveen-ul-Haq struck twice in as many overs as Qalandars limped to 29 for 4 at the end of the powerplay.Qalandars’ attempts to disrupt the flow involved sending the captain, Shaheen Shah Afridi, out at No. 6 – he had never previously batted higher than No. 8 in a T20. It was a partial (and relative) success, as he outscored the rest of the top six with 16 off 16, before running himself out looking for a non-existent single in the ninth over. With Abdullah Shafique and Wiese falling to Nawaz either side of Shaheen’s dismissal, Qalandars were seven down at halfway. But Raza hit his sixth ball, from Nawaz, for six, added another in the next over from Umaid, hit Naveen for three fours in five balls and took a brace of boundaries off Naseem Shah as the recovery partnership swelled past 50. Even with Raza’s efforts, Qalandars were unable to bat their full 20 overs – but it turned out the league leaders had more than enough for a fifth win in six.

Cavalcante alleged that Luiz suggested having a 'threesome' with her and a friend, with one purported message between the two saying she would be 'serving the lord' if they got together. Now, the Brazilian has responded to these allegations.

Jamie Smith backed for England after Surrey go clear at top of Division One

Champions require just 39 minutes on the fourth morning to see off Warwickshire

Matt Roller13-May-2024Jamie Smith has the necessary “grounding” to become a “high-quality international” according to his Surrey coach Gareth Batty, who encouraged Smith to be “a dreamer” as he enters the conversation to become England’s Test wicketkeeper this summer.Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes struggled with the bat during England’s 4-1 loss in India earlier this year – neither scored a half-century in the series, both averaged in the low-20s – with Rob Key and Brendon McCullum making clear since that the position is up for grabs ahead of July’s Test series against West Indies.Smith, 23, has been involved in England’s pathway since Under-19 level and made his international debut in last September’s ODI series against Ireland. He started the County Championship season with half-centuries against Somerset and Kent but was Surrey’s match-winner against Warwickshire, hitting 155 off 179 balls to set the game up for their bowlers.”He’s coming on very nicely,” Batty said. “I thought last year was his big coming-of-age season, turning potential into output. There were some wonderful knocks for us, and I suppose now with international stuff coming along soon, how well he’s played in this game will be on everybody’s lips. The good thing with Jamie is that it’s not just this innings, it’s been over a period of time now. He has that foundation or platform behind him.”He’s the modern-day player. To be a high-quality international, you have to have the old-school grounding. He has that, and he’s prepared to do the hard work. He has a solid defence but we also see his expansive nature. We also see what he can do in white-ball cricket, and what he did here against a tiring attack. It’s all down to the individual now.”Surrey have backed Smith to bat at No. 4 this season, despite the arrival of Dan Lawrence – England’s spare batter on their India tour – from Essex, who has found himself down at No. 6. Foakes has been their first-choice wicketkeeper, but Smith deputised in last week’s victory over Hampshire and kept tidily, despite only being involved in one dismissal.Batty declined to comment on Smith’s Test aspirations, unsurprisingly given Foakes’ own hopes to remain involved in the England set-up. But he encouraged him to be ambitious, saying: “Everybody’s a bit of a dreamer, aren’t they? I don’t think you should play sport if you’re not going to dream.”There’s a stable base behind the wonderful stuff that we see out there, which hopefully prepares you for the unexpected. People are saying very nice things… we’re trying to produce a level group, and Jamie is just one of that group. It’s nice that people are saying nice things – we want that, of course – but he has earned the right.”Surrey took 39 minutes to wrap up their nine-wicket win on the final day, chasing down their target of 89 without breaking sweat. Rory Burns fell chipping Jacob Bethell to mid-on, but Dom Sibley guided them home with a calm, unbeaten 46. Ollie Pope struck the winning runs, working Rob Yates’ offspin into the leg side and coming back for three.”We fought hard throughout the game to get the win and it was a very good team performance,” Batty said. “Our bowling was actually a bit clunky at the start of the match, after a bye week last week, but we got better and better and really turned the screw later in the game and showed just what a wonderful bowling unit we have.”Warwickshire were without several first-choice bowlers in this match – Chris Rushworth (calf) and Liam Norwell (back) are injured, Hasan Ali was unexpectedly called up to Pakistan’s T20I squad and Chris Woakes has been at the IPL – and lost Craig Miles to an ankle injury while he was celebrating his fifth wicket on the second day.”We’ve done a lot right, but we haven’t been good enough,” their coach Mark Robinson said. “It’s aspirational for us as a big club like Warwickshire to get up level with them [Surrey] – at the moment, they’re Man City and we’re not. You need a few things to go your way to give yourselves the best chance… we’ve got four frontline bowlers who are unavailable, so that doesn’t help.”

No Fortaleza, ele ‘ganhou a chave do departamento’ e revolucionou o futebol do clube nordestino.

Khaled Mahmud unhappy with role as Bangladesh team director

Former Bangladesh captain says he had no input to cricketing decisions during the tournament

Mohammad Isam03-Nov-2023Khaled Mahmud has said he regrets taking up the role of Bangladesh team director for the World Cup since realising he wouldn’t be allowed to provide any technical or cricketing input during the tournament.Mahmud’s role, which in his words is now limited to travelling with the team and maintaining discipline, had come under scrutiny after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed S Sriram as technical consultant shortly before the World Cup. It meant that the team had, in addition to the five specialist coaches, three heads in Mahmud, head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, and Sriram, who was Bangladesh’s head coach during the 2022 T20 World Cup.Earlier in Dharamsala, Hathurusinghe had said he was fine with the make-up of the management, but Mahmud felt differently three weeks later in Delhi.Related

Bangladesh face possible all-round overhaul after forgettable World Cup

Bangladesh reset their batting, but it's come too late

“I am performing only the role assigned to me by the BCB,” Mahmud said. “I don’t have the decision-making role as I have had in previous tours as a selector. Previously, I tried to keep myself involved with the team. This time, I don’t have a cricketing role. Firstly, I don’t want to be in this role like this. I have cricket in my blood. Coaching is my profession. But I am not involved with coaching with the Bangladesh team.”I had a technical role even at the last World Cup when I could speak to players. But this time, I am keeping myself away. I am definitely not enjoying this role as the head of the delegation. I am just roaming around, playing the role as a guardian to the players. I am taking care of discipline, but this is not really my work. If I knew this was my role, I wouldn’t have come to the World Cup.”Mahmud pointed to Bangladesh’s series against New Zealand in Dhaka (Mirpur) prior to the World Cup to suggest their preparation was not well planned. Bangladesh had played most of their ODIs in 2022 and 2023 in Chattogram and Sylhet to get used to good batting conditions, but then went to Mirpur just before the World Cup.”I don’t know what I was thinking when I said before the World Cup that we’d play the semi-final,” Mahmud said. “Maybe I had seen the boys’ body language and playing style. I honestly thought they would do well in Indian conditions. I had great expectations. But I am feeling very bad that we just don’t have a fighting mentality.

“I was not in favour of playing against New Zealand in Mirpur before the World Cup. Why did we have to play on those spinning pitches? Why did we want to win that series?”Khaled Mahmud

“I was not in favour of playing against New Zealand in Mirpur before the World Cup. Why did we have to play on those spinning pitches? Why did we want to win that series? We should have played in Chattogram and Sylhet. We lost the series despite New Zealand not bringing their main players. We should have been more serious, well before time, about the World Cup.”Bangladesh have lost the last six of their seven matches so far in the World Cup, and were the first team to be knocked out of contention for the semi-finals.”We have to play our best cricket in the next two matches. We must beat Sri Lanka,” Mahmud said. “Our players aren’t in a great mood. They have to do everything as they do, but they also are hurting. We had high expectations. We haven’t done well as a team. They [the players] feel that they have failed. The dressing room has become very quiet. We came here as a good team but we couldn’t perform as a team.”Bangladesh are currently in ninth place at the World Cup and need to finish in the top eight to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Their last two matches are against Sri Lanka in Delhi on November 6, and against Australia on November 11.

Harbhajan Singh wants Suryakumar Yadav in India's World Cup playing XI

“What he can do at that position, neither Virat can do, nor Sanju or Rohit Sharma”

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Sep-20232:08

Should India have resisted the ‘temptation’ of picking Suryakumar Yadav?

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh feels Suryakumar Yadav should be in the starting XI come the World Cup because he can do in his role what even Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma can’t.Harbhajan feels the selectors and team management were right to pick Suryakumar in the World Cup squad ahead of Sanju Samson, who was also in the running for a middle-order role for India.”I feel Suryakumar Yadav is a complete, complete player,” Harbhajan said in a chat organised by Star Sports. “I don’t think the selectors have been harsh on Sanju Samson. I do feel Sanju is a very very good player, a quality player. But you can only select fifteen players. But picking Suryakumar over Sanju is the right call.Related

Suryakumar Yadav: No shame in admitting 'really bad' ODI record

“Because the game that Suryakumar has in the middle over[s], I don’t think Sanju has that game. Even he goes for big shots from the first ball, but the reliability Suryakumar gives you – he can score big. Sanju I feel plays the kind of cricket where there is a lot of chances that you get out. Whereas Suryakumar, I know a lot of people ask what has he done in ODIs, but what he has done in T20s, if his innings is only going to be that long then I feel in that position, there isn’t a better player than Suryakumar in India.”What he can do at that position, neither Virat [Kohli] can do, nor Sanju or Rohit Sharma. Because what he does it’s a difficult job, batting at [No.] 5-6. What [MS] Dhoni has done, what Yuvi [Yuvraj Singh] has done.”Suryakumar Yadav averages 24.33 after 24 ODI innings•Getty ImagesSo far in his career, Suryakumar hasn’t found a way to translate his success in T20 cricket into the 50-overs format – an issue he has himself acknowledged. He averages 24.33in ODIs, with only two half-centuries in 24 innings.Harbhajan, however, feels Suryakumar has the game to shine in the challenging middle-order role in ODIs.”Because batting there is the toughest,” Harbhajan said. “Opening in [one-dayers], you know where to score runs. You have a lot of time. But when you go in to bat after 20-25 overs, you need the game to know where you can find gaps to get boundaries and I don’t think anyone in the Indian team can do that better than Suryakumar. And if it was up to me, I would play him in the team. Because when he is in the team, it increases the pressure on the opposition. Whether he fires or not. Because till the time he is at the crease, there will be pressure because on any day he can play a match-winning innings. He can hit 50-60 runs in 20 balls.”So you have to play a player like this. You can’t waste him by keeping him out. So that ends the debate on whether Sanju should be in the team ahead of Suryakumar or not. Whether Sanju is in the team or not, Suryakumar Yadav should be in the XI.”Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal – India’s two big misses?Harbhajan also feels India should have picked left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh for the variety he brings to the pace attack, as well as legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal, whom he dubbed a “proven match winner”.”I think there are two people missing from the team. One is Yuzvendra Chahal and the second is Arshdeep Singh. Because I think if a left-arm seamer can bring the new ball in [to the right-hander] at the start, it makes a huge difference in the game,” Harbhajan said. “Because if he can get two early wickets… It’s not like a right-hander can’t do that but left-arm seamers get a natural angle.”You would have seen players like Shaheen Shah Afridi or Mitchell Starc, they have a huge impact. When Australia won the World Cup [in 2015], Mitchell Starc had a huge impact, dismissing Brendan McCullum first [third] ball. So incoming ball at that speed coming in to a right hander is always a challenge.Yuzvendra Chahal did not make India’s squad for the World Cup•BCCIIndia have picked Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav as their spin options for the World Cup, with the first two offering a similar angle of attack as left-arm orthodox spinners. Harbhajan would have liked more variety in India’s spin contingent. With no offspinner in India’s squad, Harbhajan would have preferred another wristspinner who can turn the ball in both directions.”The second [notable miss in the squad] is Yuzvendra Chahal,” he said. “Proven match-winner. Someone who has taken more number of wickets than any other spinner. If he was playing for any other country, he would have thought he would make the playing XI every time. After proving so much, he should have been there in the team.”Because we have picked two left-arm spinners and they both won’t play the same game together. And it may be so that when the opposition is packed with left-handers, Jadeja may not bowl his overs as you would want someone who can take the ball away from the left-hander.”I think if you have to play three spinners you should have a left-arm spinner, a legspinner and an offspinner. And if you are picking a legspinner then maybe it’s still okay if you don’t pick an offspinner. But you didn’t pick a legspinner or an offspinner and picked two left-arm spinners, that’s a bit shocking.”

Australia's fast-bowling back-up earn central contracts, Marcus Harris also gets deal

Todd Murphy is also part of the expanded list but Peter Handscomb and Matt Renshaw miss out

Andrew McGlashan06-Apr-20231:39

Like any player, Warner at the mercy of selection – George Bailey

Australia’s back-up fast bowlers are the major winners in the expanded men’s central contract list for the next 12 months with Lance Morris, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott all earning deals.Offspinner Todd Murphy has also been offered a contract after his outstanding start to Test cricket in India. Legpsinner Mitchell Swepson is the one active international player to lose his deal alongside the retired Aaron Finch.Perhaps surprisingly, opening batter Marcus Harris has earned a place on the list despite not playing Test cricket since the 2021-22 Ashes while Peter Handscomb and Matt Renshaw, who have both featured this year, have been overlooked.Related

Bancroft's case for Test recall could prove hard to ignore

Handscomb impressed on his return to Test cricket in India, especially on the three difficult surfaces in Nagpur, Delhi and Indore. It would now appear that Harris, who was the reserve batter throughout the home summer before being leapfrogged by Renshaw in Sydney when the selectors had an eye on the India tour, has the frontrunning to be included in the Ashes squad and be next in line when a vacancy arise at the top of the order. The questions over David Warner’s form mean that could happen during the team’s time in England. Harris came into the side during the 2019 Ashes as a replacement for Cameron Bancroft but, like Warner, was picked apart by the around-the-wicket line of England’s quicks although in county cricket, where he is about to start another spell with Gloucestershire, he averages 47.62 with six hundreds.”Looking ahead, back in England and another home summer then some Tests in New Zealand, we certainly rate Harry’s ability in those conditions,” national selector George Bailey said. “[He has] a really, good strong record in England as well. One of our criteria when doing the contracts is past performance, but certainly one is an eye to the future as well so perhaps gives an indication of where we hold Harry.”Under the new MoU which was signed earlier this week, the selectors were able to offer up to 24 contracts instead of the previous limit of 20 and all the slots have been used. The group of players has been picked with a specific focus on Test and ODI cricket with the upcoming World Test Championship final and Ashes followed by the World Cup in India.Marcus Harris now appears to be at the front of the queue for an Ashes tour spot•Getty Images”We have chosen a group of players we expect will form the majority of those two campaigns and we know that we will need a squad mentality to achieve success,” Bailey said. “As we find each year now, there is a lot of cricket in the next six to 12 months and our depth will be tested. The six Test matches during the winter are in relatively short succession and we have a busy period of white-ball cricket leading up to, and post, the ODI World Cup.”Alongside the regular Test fast-bowling attack – Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Scott Boland and, if fit, Josh Hazlewood – Australia will likely need to make use of the depth on offer during the England tour.Morris, the Western Australia quick, has been around the squad since the past home season without yet making his debut. Neser played the Adelaide Test against West Indies and could be an ideal fit for conditions in England.Richardson, who was dropped from last year’s list, is currently recovering from another hamstring injury but remains highly regarded by the selectors and may come into plans for the ODI World Cup, as could Abbott who earned an upgrade to a contract during the previous season having played enough matches.”We’ve been very fortunate in the longevity and robustness of our best fast bowlers and for the most part they’ve played multiple formats as well,” Bailey said. “Clearly we’ve seen over the last 12 months, and we expect going forward, through nothing else than the sheer weight of cricket, that we needed a squad of fast bowlers.”We need to ensure we have a clear pathway and a bit of succession plan as well. Offering contracts to some players gives us the opportunity to sit down and have a really strong conversation around what the next 12 months will look like for them.”Players not awarded contracts as part of the initial squad of 24 can earn upgrades throughout the year by accruing 12 upgrade points. Players receive five points for a Test match, two for an ODI and two for a T20I.Cummins will remain Australia’s highest paid cricketer with earnings up to AU$3million for the year when captaincy bonuses are factored in. The average contract is worth AU$951,000 under the new MoU.Australia men’s contracts Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Lance Morris, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa
