Warnock says Spurs were good vs Everton

Flocking to Twitter, lots of Everton fans have erupted over some punditry from Stephen Warnock.

As shared by Sky Sports Premier League on their official Twitter page, the former Liverpool player claimed that Tottenham Hotspur were ‘very very good’ against the Merseyside club at Goodison Park over the weekend, considering that it was only a week into Antonio Conte’s reign.

He also claimed that Spurs’ wing-backs caused Rafa Benitez’s team ‘problems’, despite the final score ending up 0-0.

The analysis has left several Toffees supporters baffled, given that the Lilywhites failed to record a single shot on target in the game, despite the hosts going down to 10 men after Mason Holgate was shown a straight red card (SofaScore).

In terms of their wing-backs, Emerson Royal did not record any dribbles, key passes or accurate crosses, while Sergio Reguilon was ranked as the worst player to have started the match on SofaScore, with a mere 6.3 overall rating.

Taking these individual performances from Tottenham’s defenders into account, these Blues erupted over Warnock’s punditry as it was shared on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that it was ’embarrassing’:

West Ham: Moyes must make Vlasic call

West Ham face Manchester United for the second time in four days when they head north to begin their Carabao Cup campaign.

After suffering late heartbreak on Sunday afternoon, David Moyes and his side will not only be looking to bounce back at Old Trafford but they will also be keen to better last season’s fourth-round exit.

With everyone available for selection, the 58-year-old boss has plenty to ponder before selecting his starting XI, particularly as it’s the third time they have played in a week, with a Premier League clash against Leeds on the horizon this weekend.

It could be a good opportunity for many of Moyes’ fringe and youth players to stake a claim, too.

From all of their summer signings, only Kurt Zouma and Nikola Vlasic have seen a proper run-out, meaning Alphonse Areola and Alex Kral are surely in line to start.

And Moyes may want to consider the impact of said players, including the 29-cap Croatian playmaker, who has looked pretty sub-par since his €30m (£26m) move from CSKA Moscow.

The 23-year-old, formerly of Everton, made his Premier League debut at the London Stadium on Sunday but a 6.31 rating suggests he struggled to have much of an impact – that’s the lowest of anyone to start for West Ham this term, via WhoScored.

In the absence of Michail Antonio, Vlasic was deployed out wide for the second successive game, having played in the same position for their win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League last Thursday.

Before he was hooked 22 minutes from time, the £27m-rated dynamo managed only 30 touches, which was the fewest of any starter, including goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and that’s just not what you’d expect from someone who is supposed to be a major creative outlet.

After all, he’s come in to replace the presence of loan sensation Jesse Lingard, who bagged the agonising winner at the weekend.

Vlasic himself knows that he will have to improve to keep his place in the side.

“The team was playing very well. I’ve only been here one week [after the international break] so I’m getting used to the team and the team are getting used to me,” he told the Irons’ official website.

Perhaps he needs a little bit more time to settle in before he’s handed the full reins in attacking midfield.

Recently described as “really impressive” by Moyes, Vlasic must be ruthlessly axed for the trip to Manchester United this evening. Right now, he’s holding them back in attack but expect that to change the more he settles in.

For now, the Hammers boss must make this bold call.

AND in other news, Moyes must unleash “exceptional” West Ham titan tonight, could be big in the long run…

Roberts says Spurs miss Eriksen

Graham Roberts believes Tottenham miss Christian Eriksen after the Denmark international moved to Inter Milan in January of 2020.

The Lowdown: Eriksen departure

Eriksen made the move to Spurs from Ajax in 2013 and ended up becoming one of the side’s best players, scoring 69 goals and providing 90 assists in 305 games (Transfermarkt).

However, he made it clear he wanted to depart, and moved to Inter in January 2020.

The Latest: Roberts thinks Spurs miss Eriksen

On Twitter, a Spurs fan said the club miss Eriksen.

Roberts answer was short but sweet and straight to the point. He simply said:

“Agree”

The Verdict: Never replaced

It is hard to disagree with this statement. After all, the £36m-valued 29-year-old (Transfermarkt) was an integral part of the side for seven years and even helped Spurs reach the Champions League final in 2019, which they ultimately lost to Liverpool 2-0 in Madrid.

It was after that match that he stated his desire to seek a new challenge (The Guardian).

Since then, things have not gone well for either. Spurs have only played one more Champions League campaign, while Eriksen has managed just eight goals in 60 games for Inter. Unfortunately, the Lilywhites fan favourite has not played since he suffered a cardiac arrest playing for Denmark this summer (Sky).

Perhaps a reunion of the two parties would not be the worst thing in the world if the playmaker’s health allows him to return to action.

In other news, this man has been urged to leave Tottenham.

Everton loan Nkounkou to Standard Liege

Lots of Everton fans have been left fuming as some news emerged on Niels Nkounkou.

As per the official website of the Goodison Park faithful, the Frenchman has signed for Standard Liege on loan for the rest of the 2021/22 season.

Nkounkou has played in seven senior games in total over all competitions for the Merseyside club, including an appearance in the 2-1 away win at Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup this campaign (Transfermarkt).

His departure means that Rafa Benitez now only has one senior left-back in his current squad at the moment in Lucas Digne, leaving them awfully short in that area if he were to get injured for a sustained period of time.

Thus, it seems a strange idea to let Nkounkou go without bringing in any cover.

Everton fans on Nkounkou exit

These Toffees fumed as the exit news was confirmed on Twitter, with one Blues supporter even going as far as to claim that it is ‘disgraceful’:

We did well to keep them under 300 – Ntini

As Hayden trudged off the MCG, his favourite venue, it seemed increasingly likely that his days at the top of the order were running out, despite his declaration during the week that he had no retirement plans yet

Makhaya Ntini is not the man Matthew Hayden wants to be facing while trying to justify extending his career. When Ntini collected Hayden for 8 it was the ninth time he had picked him up in the 11 Tests they have played against each other. No bowler has taken Hayden’s wicket more times and no batsman has been dismissed by Ntini more often. It was a smart piece of thinking from Ntini, who was coming around the wicket, to lure Hayden into driving a ball that had some width and moved away a fraction. Hayden had been conscientiously leaving deliveries outside off but temptation got the better of him and histhickish edge flew to gully. It was a similar dismissal to the first innings in Perth, when Ntini angled the ball in to Hayden and nipped it away to catch the edge.As Hayden trudged off the MCG, his favourite venue, it seemedincreasingly likely that his days at the top of the order were runningout, despite his declaration during the week that he had no retirementplans yet. In Ntini’s previous over Hayden had driven handsomely downthe ground and Ntini said it showed there was a fine line between formand failure.”He’s hitting the ball very well, if you bowl like I did a bit full,”Ntini said. “Cricket has ways of … showing your downfalls, if you getfrustrated very quickly, those kinds of things are easy to show. Butif you are a hard-working person … you never know. He might come outin the second innings and score a hundred.”The early departure of Hayden brought Ricky Ponting to the creasesooner than he would have liked for the umpteenth time in the past fewmonths. Ponting has insisted all along that Hayden is striking theball well and while there are momentary glimpses of his best, thevisions are being cut short too often for an opening batsman to holdhis place indefinitely.”His results are [a worry],” Ponting said. “The way he started thismorning, he looked particularly sharp. He hasn’t got the runs that hewould have hoped for and that we would have hoped for. He’ll getanother opportunity in the second innings and then hopefully he cangrab hold of that one with both hands and make a big score.”What Hayden really needed was an attractive century, just like the onePonting delivered. His 101 was fluent but he was the only batsman whopicked up the pace of a pitch that was not offering as much bounce asexpected. Michael Clarke went to stumps on an agonising but important36 from 157 balls and Ponting said 6 for 280, on such a difficultsurface, was a good result.”We’ve had a reasonable day today I think,” Ponting said. “It’s prettyhard to gauge who’s come out on top today because the outfield as yousaw was reasonably slow so 280 to us is probably worth a bit over 300today I’d imagine.”It sounded like he was trying to convince himself as much as anyone. The loss of Brad Haddin in the penultimate over, caught at slip offNtini, gave South Africa the edge. It was a pleasing outcome for thevisitors on a day when some of their bowlers, particularly MorneMorkel, struggled to find the right length.”We had to put in a lot of hard work today because the heavy outfieldmakes a huge difference,” Ntini said. “As a batting side you alwayswant to make sure that on the first day you have to pass 300. So forus I should say we’ve done very well not to let them pass 300 on thefirst day. We will take that day as a job well done.”

Weather threatens to disrupt final fling

Intermittent rain is forecast in Napier for Tuesday’s match, increasing the prospect of the five-match series sputtering to a 1-1 score line

The Tests and Twenty20s were shared, and now the one-day series is dexterously poised at 1-1. And – just to keep with a familiar pattern over the last six weeks – the weather stands prepared to throw a spanner into the works. Intermittent rain is forecast in Napier for Tuesday’s match, increasing the prospect of the five-match series sputtering to a 1-1 scoreline.New Zealand and West Indies will hope the forecasts are completely wrong, because both sides are frantic to grab a series in what has been a tour of stalemates. Incentive, thankfully, will not be a worry.New Zealand, ranked three places above West Indies at No. 8, face a winner-takes-all situation to defend a home record of five series wins and a draw since December 2005. Daniel Vettori, the captain, has expressed his pleasure with the majority of New Zealand’s performances, but there’s no denying the sense of authority the home side search.West Indies are chasing their first series win in New Zealand since a 3-0 scoreline in 1995. Chris Gayle has readily admitted that the catching has been poor, and he knows how important it is that West Indies return home with a win.ODI form guide (last five completed games, most recent first)West Indies: LWLLL
New Zealand: WLWWLWatch out forMartin Guptill, who carried his bat and wrote himself into the history books with an unbeaten 122 on debut at Eden Park, breaking Stephen Fleming’s record (90) for the highest ODI score by a New Zealander in his first match. Guptill was dropped three times before he reached 35, but rode his luck to guide New Zealand to 275 for 4. He hardly resembled a debutant after a scratchy start and, positively for his side, his century put in the shade the Jesse Ryder fiasco.Chris Gayle has been in good form this tour. He showed his devastating power in West Indies’ win in the Boxing Day Twenty20, and was batting on an impending match-turning 46 when rain forced the abandonment of the fourth ODI in Auckland. Back at the venue where he scored a brilliant 197 during the second Test three weeks ago, Gayle once again remains West Indies’ best shot at victory.Team newsRyder comes straight back into the team after drinking indiscretions in Wellington last week saw him being stood down for Saturday’s washed-out match in Auckland. Ryder, 24, will go back to opening with Brendon McCullum while Guptill will bat at No. 3, the spot he was initially selected for. The line-up looks strong – McCullum, Ryder and Ross Taylor should provide the explosive strokeplay while Guptill, Daniel Flynn and Neil Broom offer ballast. Mark Gillespie, who was preferred to Jeetan Patel in Auckland, should retain his spot.New Zealand: (probable) 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Jesse Ryder, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Daniel Flynn, 6 Neil Broom, 7 Grant Elliott, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 10 Tim Southee, 11 Kyle Mills.Neither Sewnarine Chattergoon nor Xavier Marshall has managed to truly grab their opportunities this series. Chattergoon has looked out of place in the ODIs, while for Marshall this tour has been riddled with low scores. Chattergoon should play, but Marshall will face competition in the middle order from Shawn Findlay. Jerome Taylor was rested for the previous match and, given the magnitude of this ODI, should play. If he is passed fit, there are two options for West Indies – play four fast bowlers and rest the left-arm spinner Nikita Miller, or overlook Edwards, who has not had a good series when compared to Daren Powell’s success with the new ball and Lionel Baker’s economical spells.West Indies: (probable) 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Sewnarine Chattergoon, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Shawn Findlay, 6 Brendan Nash, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Jerome Taylor, 9 Daren Powell, 10 Nikita Miller, 11 Lionel Baker.Pitch and conditionsNew Zealand and West Indies have carried the bad weather around with them during the one-day series and they were greeted by drizzle on arrival in Napier. The fifth ODI is scheduled for a belter of a track at McLean Park so, if the weather holds up, West Indies would hope their batsmen make good use of the conditions.Stats and Trivia West Indies have lost both their matches in Napier, both after 2000.Fifteen of 28 completed matches at McLean Park have been won by the team batting second.Daniel Vettori is the highest wicket-taker at McLean Park, with 19 victims at 33.52.Quotes”This is the ultimate must-win game. It decides the whole series, the Test matches have been drawn and the Twenty20s have been drawn. This is the real decider.”
“I’m in good form. The last innings is the one that’s going to count.”

Johnson leads clinical Australia to victory

It took Australia only 48 minutes on the fourth day to wrap up New Zealand’s final four wickets and claim a 149-run win in the first Test at the Gabba. Mitchell Johnson finished with his first five-wicket haul in Tests and Stuart Clark ended up with four victims as New Zealand’s collapsible tail lived up to its reputation and they were bundled out for 177.The match finished so early – it was not yet 11am in Brisbane – that it gave the satisfied local spectators plenty of time to head off for a Sunday brunch. They had filed into the stadium knowing that a long day was improbable but the swiftness of the finish was still rather startling.New Zealand began the day needing 184 runs for victory with six wickets down but the already unlikely scenario became completely unfeasible when they lost Daniel Vettori and Ross Taylor to Johnson for the addition of 18 runs. Vettori fell in almost identical fashion to the first innings when he drove to point and Andrew Symonds jumped to take a one-handed catch above his head.Taylor followed in Johnson’s next over when he drove at a ball that moved across him and edged behind to Brad Haddin for 75. When Clark added Iain O’Brien, who lobbed a simple chance to Michael Clarke at point, the score was 9 for 164 and the only remaining points of interest were whether Johnson would collect his fifth and Chris Martin would make his 24th Test duck. The answers were yes and no. Martin managed to squeeze a single off Clark – and then watched as Tim Southee pounded a pair of sixes straight down the ground – but his bat returned to near hologram status when he was bowled from the first straight ball he received from Johnson. The stumps rattled, Australia celebrated and it left Johnson with 5 for 39, match figures of 9 for 69, and the Man-of-the-Match award. He was perhaps fortunate to receive the honour ahead of Simon Katich, whose unbeaten 131 was a matchwinning effort on a pitch where only two other batsmen posted half-centuries. Johnson was Australia’s leading wicket-taker on the tour of India but he was still pleased to return to more familiar and friendly conditions after the lifeless surfaces he had encountered recently.”It is good to get back on a bouncy fast track,” Johnson said after the match. “I felt pretty good over in India. I just try and hit the deck as hard as I can and that’s what I did out here, so I’m feeling pretty good about my bowling at the moment.”The challenge for the fast bowlers will be greater on a flatter pitch at the Adelaide Oval, where the final match of the two-Test series begins on Friday. Australia will likely squeeze the offspinner Jason Krejza into the side while New Zealand have serious questions over their batting and could bolster the line-up by including Peter Fulton.
