Swann out for two weeks with knee injury

Graeme Swann will be out of action for up to two weeks after picking up a knee injury against Australia

Andrew McGlashan in Hobart19-Jan-2011Graeme Swann will be out of action for up to two weeks after picking up a knee injury against Australia. He sustained the problem during the first Twenty20 in Adelaide and played on over the weekend in Melbourne but was forced to leave the field during the first one-day international.”He’s got a slightly strangely formed knee cap on his left knee,” Andy Flower, the England team director, said. “He got hit and it is badly bruised and quite painful so he won’t be playing in the next game and might have to rest for 10 days to two weeks.”Swann was the pick of England’s bowlers at the MCG taking 1 for 42 from his 10 overs as the visitors failed to defend 295 with Shane Watson hitting an unbeaten 161. His absence will be a major blow for England, who are already without James Anderson and Stuart Broad, as they aim to level the series because their one-day cricket is heavily based around the duel spin attack of Swann and Michael Yardy. Although, in the long run, a short break for the No. 1 spinner in the world may not be the worst thing after the exertions of the Ashes series. If England decide to retain two spinners in Hobart it will mean a chance for James Tredwell, the Kent offspinner, to add to his two ODI caps. Whoever makes up the bowling attack will have to come up with a way of stopping Watson who finally converted his consistent form into a matchwinning innings in Melbourne.”The standout performance was Watson, who played an incredible innings,” Flower said. “I thought we had periods of some very good cricket and then the odd occasion where we let slip the advantage and the momentum we had gained in the game. That’s both with bat and ball. Early wickets are always important in 50-over cricket and that’s what we will be aiming for.”In the absence of Anderson and Broad, the pace attack is light on experience with a lot of pressure on Tim Bresnan who went for 71 at the MCG. Anderson is due back in Australia at the weekend when the tour moves to Sydney and will be available for selection for Adelaide on January 26. Broad, who has been out of action since the second Ashes Test with a stomach injury, is flying back with Anderson but isn’t expected to take part in the series.”We don’t anticipate Broad playing in this series,” Flower said. “It would be a surprise if he got up to speed in time to do that but it’s better for him to be out here with us rather than in the middle of an English winter back home.”

India’s captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has been named as captain of the ICC’s Test Team of the Year, an honour he also claimed in 2009, in a line-up that also includes two other players, Sachin Tendulkar and Dale Steyn, from last year’s selection.Five countries are represented in the 11-man line-up, which includes three Indians in Tendulkar, Dhoni and Virender Sehwag, two Englishmen in Graeme Swann and James Anderson, three South Africans in Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn, two Australians in Simon Katich and Doug Bollinger, and one Sri Lankan in Kumar Sangakkara. Steyn is the only player to have featured in three consecutive years, having first been picked in 2008.Clive Lloyd, the chairman of the awards selection panel, said: “This year’s Test team has an extremely strong batting line-up that I think would set a suitable challenge to the world’s best bowlers and coupling with the superb batting skills, I feel we have selected a bowling attack which could dismiss its own batting line-up.”Lloyd was joined on the panel by former Australia batsman Matthew Hayden, former England bowler Angus Fraser, former Zimbabwe player and England coach Duncan Fletcher and former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri. Statistics were available as a guide but were not necessarily the overwhelming factor in the choices made.ICC Test Team of the Year 1 Virender Sehwag (Ind), 2 Simon Katich (Aus), 3 Sachin Tendulkar (Ind), 4 Hashim Amla (SA), 5 Kumar Sangakkara (SL), 6 Jacques Kallis (SA), 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Ind, capt & wk), 8 Graeme Swann (Eng), 9 James Anderson (Eng), 10 Dale Steyn (SA), 11 Doug Bollinger (Aus).

USA and Italy secure promotion to Division Three

USA and Italy qualified for the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 to be held in Hong Kong next year after both registered their fourth win of the tournament.Unbeaten hundreds from Rashard Marshall and Aditya Thyagarajan followed by a dominant bowling performance enabled USA to crush Argentina by 196 runs in Pianoro. The huge victory meant USA topped the table with four wins and a net run-rate better than Italy’s.Electing to bat first, USA lost openers Sushil Nadkarni and Orlando Baker in the first over bowled by Gary Savage. Agustin Casime got Steve Massiah and Carl Wright in the second over, and USA were reduced to 3 for 4. Steven Taylor followed in the fifth over, and half the side was back in the pavilion with 17 runs on the board.Lennox Cush and Thyagarajan began the fightback, adding 84 runs for the sixth wicket. Cush fell after making 58 off 54 deliveries with the score on 101. This brought Marshall to the crease and his arrival totally changed the tempo of the innings. He added 205 runs off 173 deliveries with Thyagarajan, cantering to 122 off only 84 deliveries with 11 fours and six sixes. Thyagarajan remained unbeaten on 102 off 146 with 14 fours as USA closed on 306 for 6.Argentina crumbled under the pressure of the huge chase, struggling at 30 for 6 at one stage. Only two batsmen reached double figures as they folded up for 110 in 27.2 overs. Kevin Darlington, Usman Shuja and Adrian Gordon picked up three wickets each.In Navile, Italy, too, notched up their fourth win of the tournament, thrashing Tanzania by 167 runs and sealing a place in the final against USA.Peter Petricola led a strong batting performance, making 89 off 100 deliveries with seven fours and a six. He shared useful stands with Nic Northcote, Damian Crowley and Hayden Patrizi. Patrizi remained unbeaten on 49 off only 33 deliveries, hitting four sixes as Italy finished on 259 for 7.Dilan Fernando reduced Tanzania to 33 for 5, picking up 4 for 28. Petricola then followed up his batting heroics by snaring four wickets as Tanzania were bowled out for 92 in 27 overs. Kassim Nassoro was the top-scorer for Tanzania with 34 off 39 deliveries.Nepal made short work of Cayman Islands in Medicina, bowling them out for 69 and then knocking off the runs for the loss of only three wickets. The big win was not enough for them to make the final though, as they finished third behind USA and Italy.Amrit Bhattarai and Mahaboob Alam struck early to leave Cayman Islands struggling at 25 for 5. Bhattarai had figures of 7-2-8-3. Basanta Regmi then cleaned up the tail, finishing with 4 for 13 of 9.5 overs. Only Ryan Bovell resisted, remaining unbeaten on 31 off 86 balls.Nepal faced no problems during the short chase, reaching the target of 70 in 17.2 overs and will take on Tanzania in the third-place playoff.Cayman Islands and Argentina will clash in the playoff for fifth place.

Tait replaces injured Hauritz in ODI squad

Shaun Tait is set for a surprise return to Australia’s ODI team and Steven Smith could be in line for his Test debut after Nathan Hauritz was sent home from England with an injured foot. Hauritz was troubled by pain in his left foot during the first two defeats to England and he is flying back to Australia to recover, which places him in serious doubt for Australia’s upcoming Tests against Pakistan.”While the pain was manageable in the first game, it became more severe during the second game,” Alex Kountouris, the team physio, said. “The pain is likely to be related to a previous foot injury and we have decided the best course of action is to withdraw Nathan from the current tour to allow sufficient time for it to recover. His return to training will be determined in the coming weeks.”Given that Australia’s Test series against Pakistan begins in less than three weeks, that means the legspinning allrounder Smith is likely to be elevated to Test status. Australia have few other spin options, with Jason Krejza having had hip surgery during the off season and Jon Holland also having been sidelined by injury. In the meantime, the one-day squad will welcome Tait, who has been playing Twenty20 cricket with Glamorgan and was therefore in Cardiff as Australia lost the second one-day international on Thursday, where they were without Ryan Harris due to a groin injury. Tait will travel with the squad to Manchester for Sunday’s third encounter and if he plays, it will be his first ODI since February 2009.Although he has given up on first-class cricket due to the strain on his body, Tait has remained a powerful Twenty20 strike weapon for Australia. He has kept playing 50-over cricket for South Australia but hasn’t had quite the same success, and in last summer’s FR Cup he collected 10 wickets at 44.50 with an economy rate of 6.26.”In view of the injury to Nathan Hauritz and some concerns about the injury to Ryan Harris, the national selection panel (NSP) has made the decision to add Shaun Tait to the ODI squad for the remaining one-day games against England,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. “Shaun is still very much in the thoughts of the NSP for the upcoming ICC World Cup and these games present Shaun with a great opportunity to again represent Australia in one-day cricket.”Assuming Tait’s body can handle the workload of ten overs, he will add an x-factor to an Australian attack that has struggled for penetration in the opening two games. On an Old Trafford pitch expected to help the fast men, England’s batsmen might not like the prospect of facing up to a man who during the Australian summer broke the 160kph barrier. The team’s medical staff will continue to monitor Harris in the lead-up to the third game at Old Trafford. He was Australia’s best bowler in the opening match but reported soreness in the groin area after the game.

Newcastle United: Dan Burn could outshine Bruno

What started out as a slow-moving transfer window for Newcastle United ended on a very positive note, and Eddie Howe will no doubt feel the signings his club made in January have addressed some of the desperate issues facing his squad.

Bruno Guimaraes’ big-money arrival from Lyon was no doubt the highlight, with reports suggesting that fellow Premier League side Arsenal were interested in his services.

But, while the Brazilian could be a big player for the future for the Magpies, it might be Dan Burn’s signature from Brighton that really makes the difference for the Tyneside club this season.

With the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League this year with 43 goals conceded, Newcastle were in bad need of a really dominant defender, and while Burn has predominantly played at left-back for the Seagulls this campaign, he would surely be much more of an influence by returning to the heart of defence.

The 6 foot 7 defender himself said: “I’ve enjoyed centre-back. When I was playing left-back or wing-back I was enjoying it. It wasn’t my natural position, there were some things I was limited on going forward. Now playing centre-half again I’ve realised how much I’ve missed playing there. I’ve always known I could play centre-half at this level. I’m proving to people that I can do it now.”

As per Whoscored, Burn’s average of 1.7 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game in the Premier League this season is far better than that of any Newcastle centre-back, while only Jamal Lascelles has won more aerial duels than him.

Indeed, some analysis done by The Athletic revealed: “Burn’s aerial presence could be a real advantage at both ends of the pitch. When accounting for the strength of the opponent faced in an aerial battle, you can see below how he comes out a lot stronger than Diego Carlos — he is certainly used to the style of the Premier League.”

It’s no surprise then that his former boss at the Seagulls, Graham Potter, is a big fan of the defender, dubbing him as “incredible” and saying: “Anyone that criticises someone like Dan Burn doesn’t understand football, ultimately. I wouldn’t listen to them. It’s irrelevant to me. Dan just gives his best every day.

“He’s playing at the highest level. He’s a fantastic example of what a top athlete should be in terms of it’s not going to go well every day but he recovers, he fights; he fights for the team. He’s everything you’d want from a professional footballer, so just let the ‘experts’ talk.”

As well as that much-needed Premier League experience, Burn appears to be the right kind of person mentality-wise, which is exactly what Newcastle will need in a relegation scrap.

So while Bruno’s signing is the one that might have got Magpies fans very excited, it’s Burn who could make the real season-defining impact given that he’s much more likely to hit the ground running.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are now set to make this decision…

LUFC linked with Joe Rodon transfer

After finishing in the top half of the table in their first season back in the Premier League after a 16-year absence, Leeds United’s current season has not been as smooth as most would have hoped for at the Yorkshire club.

With 18 games played, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have managed to win just three games whilst drawing seven and losing eight.

One big issue that Leeds have had to deal with this season is the fact that they have managed to concede 36 goals in those 18 games, leaving only Norwich City and Newcastle United, prior to their match against Manchester United, having conceded more.

Now that the January transfer window is set to open in a matter of days, this could give Bielsa the chance to fix some of the issues in his squad, particularly at the back, which the Whites are apparently looking to do.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from The Telegraph, Leeds are monitoring the situation of Tottenham Hotspur defender Joe Rodon who the north London club are likely to allow to leave.

The claim states he could leave “on a short-term deal” in order  “to get game time as he has struggled for minutes this season.”

Fixing an issue

Since joining Tottenham back in October last year from Championship club Swansea City, the 24-year-old has only made 13 appearances in the Premier League with 12 of them being from last season.

Leeds currently have defender Liam Cooper out through injury, meaning this could be a smart move from the Yorkshire club to bring in a capable centre-back such as the £24k-per-week Rodon, who has some experience of playing in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho once labelled the centre-back as a “perfect” player which considering he’s coached defenders such as Sergio Ramos and John Terry among many others during his managerial career, is quite the statement.

Rodon could prove to be a better option for Leeds than current centre-back Robin Koch who struggled in his first game back for Leeds in their 4-1 defeat against Arsenal after recovering from injury.

He was completely dreadful vs the Gunners, earning a woeful SofaScore rating of 5.9 and completing an uncharacteristic and measly 77% of his passes.

Keep in mind that journalist Ian Mitchelmore once dubbed him as “flawless” and it’s clear to see why he’d bring a greater degree of solidity to Bielsa’s backline.

Even though the report suggests that Newcastle United are in the lead to secure Rodon’s signature next month, Victor Orta should do all he can to sign the defender to see if he can help fix Bielsa’s issue of seeing his side concede too many goals.
