West Indies threaten boycott of fifth ODI

Cricinfo staff28-Mar-2009The possibility of a boycott of the fifth and final ODI between West Indies and England in St Lucia looms large with the West Indies captain Chris Gayle indicating that his team may not take the field on Friday if outstanding issues with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) remain unresolved.Only two days ago, Gayle said that the pay dispute wouldn’t affect the remainder of the series and West Indies’ forthcoming tour of England, with the hope that it would be resolved. However, speaking ahead of the fourth ODI in Barbados on Sunday, Gayle admitted his disappointment with the way the negotiations had unfolded between the board and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA).”I can say straight up that a boycott is a real possibility,” Gayle toldreporters on Saturday. “I am not going to go all around the world. I amgoing to say it plainly, ‘we need to have these matters resolved before theend of the series’, so we can forget about all of these disputes.”The WICB and WIPA had a two-day meeting earlier this week in Barbados to settle a number of issues including outstanding payments to the players from previous overseas tours. This happened after Dinanath Ramnarine, the WIPA president, quit as a director of the WICB, stating his position had become untenable due to the ongoing dispute.Gayle said the fourth match will proceed as scheduled but the fate of the fifth will depend on the developments over the next few days. “I am disappointed with the way things have been handled. I think they (WICB) arestill trying to bypass WIPA, and it is we, the players, that are instructingWIPA about what we want at this point in time,” Gayle said.”This is not a case, where WIPA goes off on its own and introduces thesesorts of things. We, the players, have asked for these changes, so basicallyfrom a contractual point of view, WIPA are the ones to sort them out, but Iam disappointed from what I hear.”There was a lot of speculation before the [third ODI] about whether thegame was going on. I know that I said I was looking forward to the game and so on and so forth. I would like to point out that I had not spoken to Ramnarine before attending the news conference [on Thursday], and when I got the feedback [from him], I got some disappointing news. It is not too good.”There are a lot of rumours out there, and they want to make WIPA look bad,and WIPA is not a bad thing, so we are very disappointed and will play thisgame on Sunday and see what happens in the next couple of days after this.”He also expressed his disappointment at reports in the media that five senior players were considering skipping the tour of England for the IPL in South Africa. It is understood that up to five players are upset that the tour clashes with the IPL and the WICB reacted saying a statement will be issued soon regarding their availability.”The players have come to me and are disappointed to see their names outthere in the media tarnished,” Gayle said. “It is not good. It is not right.”The arrangement was that there was to be no comments regarding thenegotiations, but we see these comments coming out, trying to get the publicagainst us, which I think will not happen. But we are all big men and we allhave to make our own decisions.”Up to this day, no one has really come to me about playing inthe IPL. But there is word on the street that there is a two-week window, and I could then fly to England.”

Aston Villa: Fans react to Preece’s post on Grealish

Birmingham Live reporter Ashley Preece gave his thoughts to Jack Grealish’s recent comments on his Aston Villa exit on Friday.

And a number of Villa supporters have reacted to Preece’s story on social media.

Grealish, who completed a £100m move to Manchester City in the summer, started for England in their 4-0 win over Hungary on Thursday.

However, prior to the game, ITV shared an interview with the 25-year-old where he reacted to his £100m release clause in his Villa contract.

Preece gave his thoughts to the interview and referenced Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips, England’s Player of the Year, when Grealish admitted that he needed to be playing Champions League football to enhance his international career.

Preece labelled the interview as a shocker that lacked class, with the Birmingham Live reporter’s story available to view in full here.

Villa fans react

He posted a link to his story on Twitter on Friday morning, and although Grealish himself has disputed the piece, these Villa fans were all in agreement, with one describing the report as ‘fantastic’.

“Ashley Preece, take a bow son. Brilliant article! It’s 100% spot on. The reason why I and others have lost any respect and love we had for a player we all once idolised. ”

The PCA Stadium in Mohali has been confirmed by the ECB as the venue of the second Test between India and England, to be played from December 19-23. The announcement follows two days of inspections by board officials, including Reg Dickason, its security advisor.Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, ended the speculation over the shifting of the match to another venue by saying they were “very satisfied” with the security arrangements.”Reg Dickason has been here for two days now and we rely on him as far as security is concerned,” Morris said. “We have received fantastic cooperation from not just the officials, but from the local security authorities as well. We are also satisfied with the security plans that have been put into place and we are looking forward to the second match being played here.”The safety of both the management and the team is of paramount importance to us, so we just wanted to make sure that everything is in place when our team arrives. The response from the local authorities and police has been very good.”The terror attacks in Mumbai a fortnight ago cut short the seven-match ODI series and cast doubts on the two-Test series, the second of which was originally to have been played at the city’s Brabourne Stadium. Ahmedabad, which had witnessed serial bomb blasts three months ago, was the original venue for the first Test but subsequently ruled out given its proximity to Mumbai.A revised itinerary saw the BCCI proposing Chennai and Mohali as possible replacement venues for the two matches. Chennai was given the go-ahead for the first match, beginning Thursday, after security inspections by Dickason. The ECB had asked for a southern Indian venue instead of Mumbai for the second Test, possibly because it would have a lower threat perception from a security point of view.Mohali presented different problems for security experts and the fans. One perceived drawback was its proximity to the border with Pakistan. The other was its lack of an international airport – the nearest is in New Delhi – which meant that, with the match due to finish on December 23, England fans travelling to Mohali would face difficulties finding a connection to get them home in time for Christmas

Celtic preparing Aurelio Buta bid

Celtic may have their first win of the Ange Postecoglou reign under their belts but they cannot neglect the need to bring more new faces to Paradise.

Joe Hart and James McCarthy became members of the Hoops family last week but there is still plenty of work to be done.

On the chalkboard

Anthony Ralston has performed admirably this season after coming in for scrutiny that he wasn’t good enough for Celtic.

Those claims made sense considering he played just once for the Bhoys last term. However, he’s been ever-present since Ange Postecoglou took charge and even scored a wonderful goal against Hearts last weekend.

Ralston collected the ball from Odsonne Edouard before dancing beyond several defenders and then planting the ball past Craig Gordon from inside the area.

He also scored against Dundee on Sunday afternoon in their 6-0 thrashing to continue his mightily impressive campaign.

Though, if Celtic are serious about advancing in Europe and contending for the title again, they will need to sign an improvement.

That’s why supporters should be delighted that they are in discussions to sign Royal Antwerp defender Aurelio Buta.

He’s been on Celtic’s radar for a number of weeks now but Sky Sports reported last Friday that a bid of £4.5m was now being prepared.

If they can lure him to Paradise, it would be an almighty upgrade on Ralston.

The Glaswegian side haven’t replaced Jeremie Frimpong since he left for Bayer Leverkusen last January but Buta would help them significantly.

He is a tackling machine and is equally adept in forward phases of play. Dubbed “very gifted” by journalist, Aster Nzeyimana, the 24-year-old completed 1.2 tackles per match in 2020/21.

That’s a tally that would have equalled Frimpong’s success rate in a Celtic shirt from the same season.

Hailed as one of the best full-backs in the Belgian top-flight, Buta would be an exceptional piece of business by Postecoglou and co.

They have needed a permanent full-back for the best part of eight months now and thus, fans should be excited at the idea of signing him.

Ralston has enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign but he is still relatively unproven in the Premiership over a prolonged period of time.

AND in other news, Bye-bye Edouard: Celtic can boost title hopes by signing “wonderful” 19-goal beast…

Crossley would like to see Johnson stay at Forest this summer

Former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Mark Crossley hopes that Brennan Johnson stays at the City Ground this summer.

The 20-year-old has featured in all four of Forest’s opening Championship fixtures providing an assist for Lyle Taylor on the opening day of the season against Coventry.

The youngster spent last season out on loan at Lincoln City and was in fantastic form, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists and helped Lincoln reach the play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

His performances have captured the attention of Premier League newcomers Brentford but the Athletic reported that Brentford had been unsuccessful with their latest bid for the attacking midfielder and said that Forest value Johnson at around £10m, but the Bees’ bid fell considerably short of that figure.

Crossley hopes that Johnson stays at the City Ground, telling The Transfer Tavern: “I’d like to see him put pen to paper, sign a new deal. His career is more important moving forward rather than instantly going to a Premier League club where he probably wouldn’t play on a regular basis.

“I’d like to see him stay at Forest because I really like him, I think he’s an excellent talent and for Forest to do well they need to keep hold of the talent that they’ve actually got.”

With just a week to go in the transfer window, will Nottingham Forest be able to stave off interest in Johnson and keep him at the City Ground?

Mahela's MCG and bad reviews

Dileep Premachandran rewinds the Plays of the day from the second day at the SSC

Two drops in a run ocean
Mahela Jayawardene needs no invitation to score at the SSC, where he already has more runs than many manage in an entire career. To drop him once then would be unfortunate. To do it twice could only be termed masochistic. When he was on 55, Dinesh Karthik failed to hold on to a bottom edge off Anil Kumble, and he had added 38 more when Karthik fluffed another opportunity, this time after a legbreak turned enough to take the outside edge. Kumble’s anguished yell said it all.Mahela’s MCG
Between 1928 and 1948, Sir Donald Bradman scored nine centuries in the 11 Tests he played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This was Jayawardene’s 20th Test at this venue, and a single to wide mid-on gave him a share of that record. The last four times he’s walked out to bat here, he’s left the crease only after making a century. Even Bradman didn’t manage that.Sliding away
Malinda Warnapura had made just 55 when he miscued one from Zaheer Khan back down the pitch. At chest height, Zaheer fumbled but managed to hold on. It didn’t matter, because by then, a no-ball had been called. Replays showed that it was desperately close, with Zaheer’s foot landing on the line and then sliding over. Such are the margins that separate a good day from a leather hunt.Getting a bad review
We had to wait 45.4 overs for the first umpiring review. Harbhajan Singh, bowling round the wicket, got one to pitch on leg stump and straighten a touch to hit Warnapura on the pad. The third umpire, Rudi Koertzen, had enough replays to see, and after taking his advice and consulting Billy Doctrove as well, Mark Benson ruled in the batsman’s favour. Warnapura celebrated the reprieve with a superb stroke through cover.Flights of fancy
Harbhajan isn’t known for flighting the ball much, and when he gave it a go against Jayawardene, you realised why the flatter trajectory is probably wiser on a pitch such as this. Like a golfer going for a hook shot, he picked the ball up from outside off stump and sent it soaring over the boundary at wide long-on. Not a shabby way to bring up yet another half-century against India.Stand your ground
The new review system wasn’t quite India’s cup of Dilmah on the second day. Late in the evening, Zaheer Khan appealed successfully for a catch behind. Tillakaratne Dilshan stood his ground though, and after replays proved inconclusive, umpire Benson had no option but to reverse his decision.

Aston Villa: Fans buzz at Axel Tuanzebe enquiry

Aston Villa have enquired over a loan deal for Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe, according to Express & Star reporter Matt Maher.

A number of Villa supporters have been sharing their positive thoughts on the transfer update on social media.

According to Maher, Villa have registered their interest ahead of a possible third Midlands loan spell.

Tuanzebe has already made 35 appearances for Villa, two shy of his total at Old Trafford, however, concerns over playing time could reportedly be an obstacle when it comes to a potential Villa Park return.

The 23-year-old is set to depart United after the Red Devils signed Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

Newcastle also want to sign the versatile defender, but it seems as if Villa have taken the first steps to secure  Tuanzebe’s services.

Villa fans react

@villareport shared Maher’s Tuanzebe enquiry claim on Twitter on Thursday evening.

These Villa fans all seemed to be for a move, with one believing a possible loan to buy deal would be ‘unreal’, should the club manage to negotiate one.

New Zealand set for 'high-tech' makeover

New Zealand are set to try out high-tech bowlers’ trousers, specially designed to put shine on the ball, for the third Test against England at Trent Bridge. The trousers – manufactured by New Zealand-based outfitters Canterbury – were set to be used only from October, but they have been tried in practice. Also included is the micro-slide version for fielders, and the IonX BaseLayer performance underwear which is claimed to improve performance by 2.7%.Reports said several pairs were “smuggled in” during the second Test at Old Trafford, and one or two players tested the trousers with the logos covered by tape during the side’s tour match at Northampton. The trousers were developed under the supervision of Dipal Patel, a former engineering student. “When I came into cricket I was surprised to find there are no regulations about what materials you can and can’t use,” he told the .”To start with, we looked at putting two patches on the bowlers’ trousers – one to shine the ball, and one to scuff it up, in case you wanted to produce reverse-swing. But we have since dropped the abrasive patch. I’m a member of MCC, and I didn’t want to lose my membership for going against the spirit of cricket.”An MCC spokesman told the BBC that there was no issue with the trousers. “We believe they conform under law 42.3, so we don’t see a problem with them,” he said.
