Newcastle United: Craig Hope reveals Martin Dubravka injury

Craig Hope has revealed on his official Twitter page that Martin Dubravka may be out injured for six to eight weeks, according to the coach of Slovakia.

The Daily Mail journalist has confirmed the “huge blow” to Newcastle United, who may also be without strikers Dwight Gayle and Joelinton for the start of the new 2020/21 season.

However, the likely absence of Dubravka at least for the first few games will surely hurt Steve Bruce and the members of the Toon Army.

The goalkeeper was voted as the Tyneside club’s player of the year after a relatively impressive 2019/20 campaign that saw him rack up 11 clean sheets in 39 matches in all competitions, including playing in every single minute of the Premier League term, as per Transfermarkt.

It means that the Magpies will now have to rely on Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie as the only ‘keeper options available to Bruce, with the latter a new signing from Scottish team Motherwell (via the website) and will surely need time to settle in and adapt to life at St. James’ Park.

Whether this means that the English manager will now go in and try to get another player between the sticks as cover is another question, but the injury to Dubravka has certainly not helped his plans going into the next season.

The 31-year old very much established himself as Bruce’s number one by playing in every minute of the top flight in the last campaign, and by winning the player of the year award, the Slovakian international cemented himself as an important part of the side.

Watford: Lazio interested in signing Hornets youngster Luis Suarez

According to Italian media outlet Corriere della Sera [via Insidefutbol], Watford could lose young striker Luis Suarez to Serie A side Lazio and, given his form on loan at Real Zaragoza this season, the Hornets should be hopeful that this move doesn’t come to fruition in the summer.

Corriere della Sera added [via Insidefutbol] that Suarez is one of many attacking options that the Italian side are looking to pursue and minor discussions have gone on between Lazio and Watford’s owner Giampaolo Pozzo. However, as it stands, the forward will return to the Premier League side.

Suarez has yet to play for the Hornets but clearly has an eye for the net as he is currently enjoying his spell at Real Zareagoza in the Spanish second tier, for whom he has scored 17 goals whilst also picking up three assists in 30 appearances, per Transfermarkt.

The Colombian is only 22 and is currently getting some great experience abroad, and with Watford’s two main strikers Andre Gray and Troy Deeney 28 and 31 respectively, the club need younger strikers like Suarez to be part of the team in the future.

It would be a big risk to let the player go, with a good finisher being very expensive in today’s transfer market, and so the Premier League side should look to keep him for now, especially if Serie A title contenders Lazio are interested in the player.

Leeds vs Huddersfield could be decided by this one key battle

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds United have a Yorkshire derby to look forward to this weekend as they prepare to face Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

On paper, this should be a routine win for the Whites as they face the Terriers who have failed to win any of their previous four games as they sit 19th in the division.

However, that doesn’t mean that Huddersfield aren’t a threat as they have one of the division’s deadliest strikers amidst their ranks, and with Leeds having to play a slightly weakened side due to Kalvin Phillips’ suspension they may struggle to deal with the threat he poses.

Can you get full marks on the Ultimate Leeds Quiz? Test your knowledge below…

Huddersfield’s talisman

If Danny Cowley’s side are going to take any points off Leeds this weekend then they’ll be looking towards Karlan Grant to carry them over the line.

The striker is fourth in the scoring charts in the Championship this term, and he’s been a shining beacon of hope in what has been a miserable season for the former Premier League side.

Normally, you would say that Leeds’ defence will have things under control as they’ve conceded just 11 goals in 19 league games this term, but a suspension to Kalvin Phillips may mean that Gaetano Berardi has to start, and Grant may be able to take full advantage of that.

Key battle.

The WhoScored stats show that this will be an interesting battle.

As you can see, Grant is absolutely clinical as he’s scored 11 goals this term despite only averaging 2.2 shots per game.

Berardi will have to make sure he doesn’t allow him a sight at goal, and with just 0.5 blocks a game from the Swiss defender he may not be up to the task of stopping the striker from finding the net.

One area in which the centre-back will have the advantage is when the ball is in the air as he wins over twice as many aerial duels as Grant.

Of course, playing out from the back is key for a Bielsa side, but Grant’s pressing may cause problems.

The striker makes 0.5 interceptions per game, and while that doesn’t sound all that great that’s a decent tally for a striker. In comparison, Patrick Bamford is often praised for his pressing, yet he hasn’t made an interception all season.

That means that Berardi will be under pressure to make sure his passing is at its best against Huddersfield, and his pass success rate of 83.2 per cent suggests that there’s a chance for Grant to take advantage of any wayward balls from the defender.

In other news, Phil Hay has named a PL striker as a potential replacement for Eddie Nketiah.

Michail Antonio could be the key to unlocking Sebastien Haller’s potential

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Sebastien Haller has scored 4 goals and got 1 assist this season, as per WhoScored, but the feeling remains that West Ham United can get more out of him.

The main issue that has been cited so far is the lack of support he has had on the pitch, with Tony Cottee telling Football FanCast: “I think at times he’s been a little bit isolated up front, so he could do with a little bit of help, but I’ve been impressed.”

A solution will need to be found for how to deal with this, and there is hope that the answer to the problem is already on the club’s books.

It has been indicated by The Athletic that the feeling within West Ham is that their club-record signing could improve once Michail Antonio returns from injury.

In a previous article by the same outlet, Antonio was quoted as saying: “It’s good that we have two people up there now who can play the big man game. We can both hold the ball up, we can both run in from behind, so we’ve had a nice little partnership going.”

If Pellegrini decides to switch to a 4-4-2, with Antonio alongside Haller, then it would certainly be very intriguing to see how that partnership flourishes.

With Haller winning 6.7 aerial duels per game this term, having someone with Antonio’s dynamism around him would certainly ease the isolation he has had to deal with in a claret and blue shirt thus far.

In addition, Antonio’s running in behind could give Haller more space to exploit, rather than being the main focus of opposition defenders.

There will have to be a bit of patience, with Antonio expected to be back following the international break, but when he is back the 29-year-old could be just what Haller has needed all along.

West Brom have been gifted a perfect opportunity to play Ahmed Hegazi

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

West Bromwich Albion enter the final international break of this calendar year sitting atop the Championship table after 16 matches.

Slaven Bilic’s side have lost just one match all season and currently hold a two-point cushion over the chasing pack of Preston North End and Leeds United.

Upon their return to league action in two weeks, the Baggies’ squad depth is really going to be tested as they will face eighth-placed Sheffield Wednesday without their skipper Jake Livermore and his midfield partner Romaine Sawyers.

Both have started every single game under the Croatian, but having picked up their fifth bookings of the season against Hull City last time out, there’s now a pressing concern in a vital area.

On the Chalkboard

If there’s one area on the pitch that Albion lack numbers the most, it is in central midfield.

Gareth Barry has only just recently re-signed at the club, having battled back from a career-threatening injury, so this game may be too soon for him while Rekeem Harper appears to be out of Bilic’s immediate plans having featured for just six league minutes all season.

That leaves Chris Brunt and Filip Krovinovic as other options, but they have both played the majority of their careers in a different role.

One possible solution may be to break up a defence that has kept just four clean sheets this season by bringing centre-back Semi Ajayi into midfield.

It is a position he has played in before at his former club Rotherham United- in 22 matches, the Nigeria international has averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.06, also recording 2.7 tackles and 1.9 clearances per game.

For just one game, he would be an ideal option in the heart of midfield.

It also means that Ahmed Hegazi is given a perfect opportunity to return to defence, in a move that can only benefit West Brom’s entire season.

Given their lack of clean sheets and their ability to concede an average of over one goal per game, something has to change at the back, and the experienced Egyptian can offer some further stability.

He played 40 times last season as the Baggies made the playoffs, averaging a massive 6.3 clearances and 1.4 tackles per game.

Fans love Hegazi at the Hawthorns, so what better way to integrate him back into the starting line up following his return from injury.

He hasn’t been seen since the heartbreak of their playoff defeat to local rivals Aston Villa.

Charlton fans think Macauley Bonne should start against Derby on Saturday

Some Charlton fans have taken to Twitter to reveal that they want Macauley Bonne to start against Derby on Saturday.

The 23-year-old has had to make a big step, having been signed from the National League back in the summer, and has been a bit of a revelation after jumping up through so many divisions.

Bonne has started just three of Charlton’s eight Championship games this term, but has netted two goals in those three starts.

Impressively, the quality of the opposition he has netted against is eye-catching, and deserves praise given how many divisions Bonne has risen through.

The 5 foot 11 forward scored the winner against Leeds, and also netted a crucial goal against Fulham to help Lee Bowyer’s men to a 2-2 draw against a promotion favourite, making him a bit of surprise package this season – we doubt many fans expected their non-league signing to be bagging against some of the biggest clubs in the division.

As a result of his spirited showings, a number of Charlton fans on Twitter have called for the No.17 to start this Saturday’s game against Derby…

Manchester United would sack their manager if it wasn’t Solskjaer, pundits claim

With an alarming array of reds and yellows and barely any greens, Manchester United’s form guide makes for very, very poor viewing. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that the mesmerising flurry of form experienced by the 20-time champions of England when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was first appointed caretaker manager in December was more a result of relieving the crushing weight of Jose Mourinho’s relentless negativity than it was the former Molde manager’s tactical knowhow.Under Solskjaer, United have suffered their worst start to a season in over 30 years and are currently 12th in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone. They have not won away from Old Trafford in domestic competition since February and have failed to score more than one goal in any game since the opening day of the season, and with last term’s staunchest defenders Liverpool as their next game, we don’t see their dreadful record improving anytime soon.Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Since being appointed on a permanent basis, Solskjaer has registered a win percentage of just 24 per cent – which breaks down into five wins, seven draws and nine losses. United have also conceded 27 goals in that time and scored just 18 themselves. Boring and ineffective doesn’t quite cut it.

However, as Ed Woodward announces that patience is required as the club try to recapture their former glory, which seems a very long way off, there’s little evidence to suggest that the board will be taking the same course of action we’d typically expect when any manager underperforms. But is this right? Can we really expect a repeat of Sir Alex Ferguson’s iconic turnaround?

talkSPORT had their say on the situation…

Wolves’ Adama Traore seems satisfied after receiving FIFA 20 upgrade

“Now we are talking.”

Traore seems to be happy with fact that he’s been upgraded to a rating of 80 rather than his original 74.

There’s a lot for the winger to be happy about with his stats as well. The pace rating of 97 makes him the fastest player in the game.

It seems as if this upgrade will spur the Spaniard on to improve even further, as he says that he will keep working hard to be the best that he can be.
