Doherty has not been a regular first-class player for the Tigers in recent years and his national call-up came in the 50-over format, but he proved he has plenty to offer in the longer version as well with his best bowling since 2004-05.Doherty finished with 5 for 83 and was largely responsible for giving Tasmania a strong chance of collecting first-innings points as Victoria ended the day at 8 for 261. Rob Quiney was on 51 and Darren Pattinson was on 23, but the Bushrangers need some serious tail-wagging in order to overhaul Tasmania’s 326.Doherty collected both openers, the left-handers Michael Hill and Chris Rogers caught at short leg, and followed with three more victims. Luke Butterworth was the only other Tasmanian bowler to claim a wicket, while Ben Hilfenhaus enjoyed a lengthy if unsuccessful stint ahead of the first Ashes Test.Quiney, who batted at No. 7, reached his half-century late in the day after Aaron Finch (41) had been the leading scorer among the top order. The Tigers began the morning with one wicket in hand and the final pair added a further 11 before Peter Siddle grabbed his second wicket to complete the innings.

Celtic: Greg Taylor was disappointing

Celtic moved six points clear at the top of the Premiership table as they beat their rivals 2-1 in the Old Firm clash on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou may have been fearing the worst when the home side took the lead in the opening minutes of the match, as Aaron Ramsey fired past Joe Hart to make it 1-0 at Ibrox.

The Hoops rallied quickly and soon found themselves level as Tom Rogic followed up on a save from Allan McGregor to make it 1-1.

A scrappy sequence of play in the box from a cross then resulted in Cameron Carter-Vicker smashing the ball past the veteran Scot to make it 2-1 just before half-time, with Celtic able to see out the three points in the second half.

One player who let Postecoglou down badly was left-back Greg Taylor as the defender looked well off his best form on the day.

On the ball, he was not a reliable option for his teammates. As per SofaScore, he gave possession away 17 times as he only completed 64% of his attempted passes. He failed to complete a single long ball or cross in his 71 minutes on the pitch, whilst completing zero dribbles to get his team up the pitch.

This allowed Rangers to intercept his passes and regain possession from his mistakes. He found himself incredibly lucky as the home side were unable to make the most of the attacks that he gifted them, with Carl Starfelt and Carter-Vickers producing colossus displays at centre-back to keep them at bay.

Defensively, he was sloppy. Ally McCoist, in the Sky Sports commentary, dubbed his defending as “very poor” and the statistics back that up. Via SofaScore, he lost four of his five ground duels and only made one tackle in the match, whilst being dribbled past once.

This shows that Rangers were able to get the better of the full-back on the physical side of the game. He was too weak in his individual battles and, again, was lucky that Gio van Bronckhorst’s side did not punish him for it.

Postecoglou will now be hoping that he will be able to turn in a better display against St. Johnstone next time out in the Premiership. This performance was not good enough, defensively or offensively, and he will know that he must up his standards if he wants to keep his place in the starting XI.

Villa transfer latest: Rodrigo Bentancur

Sky Sports have provided a live TV update on Aston Villa’s pursuit of Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

The Lowdown: Bentancur or Kamara?

Villa are seeking a holding midfielder before the month is out and have seemingly moved on from Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma after a £25m bid was rejected.

Bentancur appears to be the club’s main target, although according to Fabrizio Romano, Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara is also on the list.

The latter is primarily a defensive midfielder whereas the former, who has won nine trophies at club level, has mainly been used as a central midfielder, and an update has emerged regarding Bentancur.

The Latest: Sky Sports update

Sky Sports provided an on-air update regarding Villa’s attempts to sign the Juventus beast on Monday.

Relayed by Football Daily, ‘some breaking transfer news’ was shared, with Villa yet to make an official bid for the Uruguayan.

A ‘significant’ sell on-clause inserted by Boca Juniors may impact a possible transfer, with Juventus valuing Bentancur at ‘over’ £16m.

The Verdict: Move for Kamara?

Should a deal for Bentancur prove complicated, then perhaps Johan Lange should move on to Kamara with just six days remaining in the transfer window.

As mentioned, his natural position is a defensive midfielder who can also play at centre-back if required, and he has plenty of experience for his current employers.

Kamara is out of contract at the end of the season, with Marseille seeking just £10m for a January switch. Villa have already spoken to his agent, so should a move for Bentancur fail to materialise, the 22-year-old could be an excellent alternative.

Celtic: Bitton back early ahead of Rangers

Celtic’s Nir Bitton has left the Israel camp early and returned to Parkhead ahead of the Glasgow derby next weekend.

The lowdown

Israel manager Marco Balbul had called up the 30-year-old for his nation’s friendlies against Germany and Romania, and Bitton played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 defeat against Hansi Flick’s side on Saturday.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They host Romania in Netanya on Tuesday night, but the Hoops ace has already turned his attention back to club football.

Celtic travel to Rangers on Sunday looking to open a six-point lead over their arch-rivals at the top of the Premiership.

The latest

Digital journalist @CraigCelt relayed the news on Bitton via Twitter on Sunday evening.

He said that the 30-year-old had been ‘allowed to return’ to Celtic’s Lennoxtown training facility ‘earlier than planned’ in order to prepare for the potentially season-defining game at Ibrox.

The verdict

The £14,000-per-week midfielder will surely be among those considered by Ange Postecoglou for selection against Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s outfit.

He played the full 90 minutes in the Hoops’ last top-flight away match against Livingston on 6 March and delivered an ‘absolutely outstanding’ performance, in the words of Chris Sutton.

His ability to operate as both a centre-back and a defensive midfielder may boost his chances of making a 12th league start of the season next weekend.

This is certainly positive news for Postecoglou, and Bitton isn’t the only player who may be fresher than expected for the Glasgow derby. Greece are apparently planning to rest striker Giorgos Giakoumakis, while Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic has hinted that Josip Juranovic may also be given a night off.

Those developments will surely be music to the Celtic manager’s ears.

Newcastle transfer news: Lingard & Carlos

Alex Crook has now revealed a big Newcastle United transfer twist involving both Jesse Lingard and Diego Carlos.

The Lowdown: Looked unlikely

Both Lingard and Carlos have been heavily linked with moves to St. James’ Park throughout the January transfer window so far, but have begun to look increasingly unlikely as the window progresses.

Sky Sports journalist Pete Graves has recently doubted the likelihood of Lingard moving to the North East, while Sevilla club chief Monchi believes that Carlos will now stay at the La Liga club.

However, anything can happen in the next couple of days, and deals should not be completely ruled out at this stage.

The Latest: Twist

As per talkSPORT journalist Crook, the Tyneside outfit are now ‘back in talks’ to sign Lingard, while a deal for Carlos ‘might not be totally off the table’ either:

“As just discussed with @JimWhite @talkSPORT are hearing #NUFC are back in talks with #MUFC over Jesse Lingard and Diego Carlos might not be totally off the table either.

“Gonna be an interesting end to the window at SJP.”

The Verdict: Get them in!

If there is any hope remaining that both Lingard and Carlos can still be signed, then the Magpies need to get them in as soon as possible.

Described as ‘sensational‘ while on loan at West Ham last season by Arsenal and Premier League legend Nigel Winterburn, Lingard has already shown what a difference he can make to a team, with his nine goals and five assists a major factor in the Hammers securing UEFA Europa League football for this term.

Meanwhile, Carlos would be a real asset to the Toon’s backline, as he has been dubbed as a ‘real leader at the back’ (The Daily Express) by European football expert Andy Brassell, and he is nicknamed ‘The Beast‘ himself, suggesting that he would be right up for the relegation fight.

Leeds United must unleash Cody Drameh

Off the back of two successive agonising defeats – and both for different reasons – Leeds United face the daunting task of games against Arsenal, Liverpool and a resurgent Aston Villa before the end of the year.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were hammered 7-0 by Manchester City in their latest outing, and host Arsenal knowing that they are firmly in that battle to beat the drop.

Injuries have derailed the Whites’ hopes of enjoying another impressive year in the top-flight, but while that is understandably a cause for concern, it can also be a blessing in disguise in other respects: namely, handing an opportunity to some of the club’s brightest young prospects.

Joe Gelhardt has already had his share of first-team football in recent weeks, and now, Cody Drameh should surely be in the frame for a starting spot.

Jamie Shackleton occupied that right-back slot against City before being taken off, and when you consider Bielsa ought to be putting square pegs in square holes, Drameh must figure into the equation for that role going forward.

Indeed, The Athletic’s Phil Hay has even suggested that the 20-year-old could well be the long-term heir to Luke Ayling.

He said: “The point about Drameh was that he could be a natural successor to Ayling, who still has time left but is clearly not in his first flush of youth. Drameh is well thought of and I do feel like he’s got a serious chance here if he’s patient.”

While naturally much of the excitement of Leeds fans will be surrounding Gelhardt, Drameh is another from the U23s group who could really make a name for himself at Elland Road.

At just 20, the versatile ace has got plenty of time to grow and develop, but first-team minutes could be more on offer now that the Whites find themselves in such an injury crisis.

Eredivisie scout Xander Wilkinson was quick to rave about his potential and how good he is already, saying: “Defensively so impressive! His mind works quicker than most right-backs I’ve seen in a naturally defensive mindset. Tactically very aware of what is being asked of him, times his engagements well, needs to add a little more unpredictability going forward.”

Meanwhile, LUTV commentator Tom Hill described the 20-year-old as a “box of tricks” after an impressive performance against Sunderland at U23 level, and that bodes well for his future as a more adventurous full-back.

With the busy festive schedule taking its toll on Leeds’ players, Drameh could finally be unleashed by Bielsa in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Leeds are eyeing a move for this South American star…

Celtic: Alan Hutton reacts to Dilan Markanday links

Pundit Alan Hutton has been reacting to Celtic’s interest in Tottenham winger Dilan Markanday, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Markanday links

Celtic already have Spurs defender Cameron Carter-Vickers on the books at Parkhead and have an option to make his loan move permanent.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-18/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, the Hoops have now been linked with a move for another Tottenham talent in Markanday. The Standard shared a story at the beginning of December claiming Celtic and Glasgow rivals Rangers are battling it out for the 20-year-old.

Markanday recently made his senior Tottenham debut and is also wanted by multiple Championship clubs, with his deal in north London set to expire in the summer.

The Latest: Hutton’s comments

Hutton, who regularly features on BBC Radio 5 Live, was talking to Football Insider regarding Markanday’s future and seemed to back a move to Celtic over rivals Rangers.

“The fact they’re in Europe, it will boil down how much playing time is he going to get.

“If he’s going to come up to Rangers, maybe sit on the bench and be a bit-part player, that’s not ideal. If he’s going to go to Celtic and play more minutes, it’s all about the player’s development.

“His plan is to come up, do well, play games to go back and be a Tottenham Hotspur player. It’s whatever’s going to suit him the best game-wise. That will be the team that he fits.

“If it’s a Championship team that is close to London, where he’s going to play week in, week out, that is better for his development.

“Better than maybe playing the odd European game for Rangers and Celtic and sitting on the bench. It’s all really going to depend on game time.”

The Verdict: Shrewd move?

Markanday is clearly highly-rated across the country with a number of sides interested and Tottenham keen for him to sign a new deal, so a Celtic swoop could turn out to be a shrewd one in the long run.

Ange Postecoglou does have six wingers on the books at Parkhead at this moment in time, but should Karamoko Dembele move on when his contract expires in the summer, he could come in to replace the 18-year-old.

Markanday would provide Postecoglou with an option on the left, right or in an attacking midfield role, and his versatility may appeal to the Hoops, who could launch a pre-contract agreement swoop in the New Year, should his situation remain the same.

In other news: Print newspaper claims European giants are willing to sell ‘explosive’ star to Celtic in January.
