Lavender calls for 'customer-friendly schedule'

Despite a push that took the game into the last hour, Somerset couldn’t force a win over Nottinghamshire

Despite a push that took the game into the last hour, Somerset couldn’t force a win over Nottinghamshire. The game was hindered badly by the weather and, with the ECB launching more consumer research into the domestic game, attention among members turned to the makeup of the fixture list in the future.A healthy crowd was in to enjoy the sunshine, highlighting Somerset’s good membership and the support for Championship cricket. The county also boast a big following for Twenty20 and the balance between all the competitions gives the chief executive, Guy Lavender, plenty to ponder for his wishes of the schedule.”We’re lucky here; we’re extremely well attended for County Championship cricket,” Lavender told ESPNcricinfo as Notts batted out for a draw on the final afternoon. “We’ve got a very strong membership base and we attach importance to the Championship as the premier competition. But there are different views about it around the country so there are certain things we have to do to make the structure more sustainable.”Number one: the fixture list has to be easy to understand; number two, it has to be interesting; and number three, it has to be at a time where people can come and watch the games. If we just descend into ‘how many matches’ or ‘how many counties’, it misses the point. You don’t need detailed debates, we’ve got to say, ‘What works? What type of structure is attractive to the customer?’ That is what drives the game.”When the counties decided more T20 would drive the game there was a general downward trend in overall profit. Somerset were one of few that thrived. They can make more matches work and saw takings fall back this season with the reduction in games.”We’d like to see the number of T20 games increase,” said Lavender, who wasn’t pleased to see the Morgan Report rejected. “As a club we have the capacity to increase the number of fixtures and not only make them pay but make them good experiences for the supporters. We would have a preference for matches to be spread out across the course of the season because it provides the best opportunity for more people to come and watch. If you schedule T20 at the right time – as with CB40 – then people will turn up. It’s not rocket science.”But finding regularity in the calendar is hampered by broadcasting demands, with Sky keen to screen a match every night of the week – reducing the capacity for T20 to be staged on a regular evening and the scope for matches to be spread out.”Of course there are broadcast demands but I don’t think that drives all of the decision-making about the schedule,” Lavender said. “If we want cricket to thrive then we have to give people the best opportunity to come and watch and I think there is recognition from the ECB and Sky that that needs to happen.”With the Gloucestershire T20, because of the rivalry and locality, that match will sell out whenever it is played but others won’t. So we need to provide something that, perhaps as a not-as-keen follower of Somerset, you can go to every other Friday. It creates regularity and it fits into the way people live their lives and I think that’s really important. And that holds true for other formats of the game.”The problem is every county is looking at the structure of the game through their own lens and it’s the responsibility of the ECB to work for the greater good of the game.”That greater good is being worked out through further consumer research. What it should find – given the backlash the proposed cuts received from players and supporters – is that the County Championship is just fine; and at Taunton both teams lost ground to Warwickshire in the title race that has four more rounds to produce another thrilling climax.Nottinghamshire will be the happier of the teams from this draw. They keep Somerset at arm’s length and survived what could have been a tricky afternoon on a pitch that began to show signs of invariable bounce and some turn. Pete Trego was also getting some deliveries to tail into the right-hander – it was an inswinger that ended James Taylor’s attractive 46. He also had Michael Lumb superbly caught one-handed by Jos Buttler – keeping wicket in place of Craig Kieswetter and suggesting Somerset have enough depth to stay the distance in search of a first County Championship success. They have hung on to the title race despite a host of injuries, their squad so depleted they had to cancel a second-XI match earlier this season. But they now have the chance to make another run for a maiden title and three of their remaining four matches are at Taunton, against Sussex, Surrey and Worcestershire.

SA struggle to find value in tri-series

An unofficial tri-series in Harare, involving two sides they have beaten soundly in the past means Hashim Amla’s side don’t have too much of a challenge ahead

Firdose Moonda18-Jun-2012You would be forgiven for thinking it strange that Hashim Amla sounded like a man going to war when South Africa departed for Harare. For one, Amla rarely sounds like anything but a man coming from an ashram. Then of course, there are the facts to consider. South Africa’s Twenty20 squad are going to play in an unofficial tri-series in Harare, involving two sides they have beaten soundly in the past and will likely continue to beat in various formats almost all of the time.Nothing to get too excited about, except that only victory will justify their inclusion in this competition. “We are kind of expecting that [to win],” Amla said. “But in the T20 format, teams that are not so well known can perform really well too. But, we are expecting to perform well.”It is almost unnaturally bullish talk from the stand-in skipper ahead of what is increasingly looking like a meaningless contest. There’s certainly no prize at stake – Zimbabwe Cricket could barely afford to host the event – neither is there much recognition for the team who wins, no rankings points and surely no bragging rights to take into the World T20.The only benefit it could have is that of preparation but even that is starting to look dubious from a South African perspective. Their players will spend two months in England before the ICC tournament even crosses their minds and will have far more pressing issues at hand. The Test squad will be concerned with wresting the No.1 ranking from England, the ODI squad with not fading as dramatically as they did after the Test series victory four years ago and only then will twenty-over cricket become an issue worth pondering. From a timing perspective, this week probably comes too early for it to be called a camp for the World T20. Johan Botha alluded to it when he said he thought it was “too far out” for him to be worried about missing out through injury, because he will play enough cricket between now and September to be ready. When South Africa requested the fixtures, they asked for five matches in five days, a schedule that would create intensity. The inclusion of Bangladesh in the event changed it to four matches in six days, with the additional possibility of a final. While that is not drastically different to what South Arica initially wanted, their attitude seems to have changed.Instead of using the week to fine-tune tactics and strategies with a squad that closely matches to the men who will travel to Sri Lanka, South Africa have opted to rest captain AB de Villiers and their frontline pace bowlers Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn. Given these players workloads, it made sense to leave them out, although it does mean South Africa will field teams in Zimbabwe that do not look like the XIs who will play in Sri Lanka, particularly not on the bowling front. It’s a concern that Amla hinted at when he said ultimate specialisation is not the way to go. “It does seem that that’s the trend these days, to have specialised players but I guess the ideal would be to find a good balance; where the team doesn’t change a lot and there’s a good core of players and other guys just fit in,” he said. This series will be more of a case of the latter. Opportunity will be present for a relatively unknown bowler like Chris Morris to make an impact, for Wayne Parnell to come full circle after his comeback from injury over a year ago and for Marchant de Lange to show his last over heroics in New Zealand were no fluke.Of greater concern though will be the batting. South Africa’s 14-man squad is loaded with middle-order batsmen, none of him have nailed down a spot as their own. Colin Ingram, Justin Ontong, Farhaan Behardien and Dane Vilas will all have the chance to perform but given the experimentation that is likely to take place, none of them can count on a sustained run in Harare. The player who may be particularly concerned about where he will fit in is Faf du Plessis. Although considered an integral part of the ODI squad, du Plessis has yet to play in T20 for South Africa but forced his way into the squad through his showings in the IPL. Du Plessis was asked to open the batting by Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming and did so with some success, scoring three half-centuries and ending the tournament as his franchise’s second highest run-getter.Du Plessis’ promising form led to speculation that he may open the batting with Richard Levi, a position currently held by Amla, who has not had much to show for the eight T20s he has played. Amla left space for juggling the batting order, which should give Du Plessis at least one look in. “We know in T20 format, very seldom does a team get bowled out. So you can afford to have guys opening the batting who don’t normally open the batting to get them in as quickly as possible.”Du Plessis could also challenge Amla on the captaincy front. Having been named captain of the A side, du Plessis may have to step in if Amla is left out for a game for the sake of testing combinations. Amla was a reluctant leader during last year’s ODI and T20 series against Australia and was only named captain for this week when Botha was ruled out. For him, this series will also be an opportunity to have another shot at the task. “I always understood as vice-captain that sometimes AB [de Villiers] won’t be around and I will have to do it.”

Dilshan puts onus on fast bowlers

Tillakaratne Dilshan has said the future of Sri Lanka’s bowling lay in the hands of the fast men, and not spinners who have been their traditional strength.”In the past 20 years or so we have depended on the spin of [Muttiah] Muralitharan for our success,” Dilshan said before the team left for the UAE to meet Pakistan in a series of three Tests, five ODIs and a one-off Twenty20 International. “Murali is a bowler who can take six-eight wickets in an innings, we have still not found anyone who can do it consistently as him.”The future for our success lies with our fast bowlers. In the spin department only Rangana Herath has proved himself a top-quality bowler. If we hope to win Test matches we will have to have the support of the other spinners as well.”Sri Lanka suffered a blow when one of their most promising young fast bowlers Shaminda Eranga was ruled out of the tour with a shoulder injury to his bowling arm. He has been replaced by allrounder Kosala Kulasekara.Sri Lanka are taking five fast bowlers and two spinners to the UAE. Dilshan said that he was not duly worried that Sri Lanka had yet to record a win in their previous 11 Tests. “We have lost two matches and drawn nine and that is not a bad record. We lost the two Tests to very good sides England and Australia, one of them was due to a poor batting performance at Cardiff and in the other at Galle the toss played a crucial role. If you look back on the rest of our performances I am quite satisfied.”Dilshan said that he was confident his team would be able to end their win drought in UAE. “Pakistan has a mix of experienced and young talent in their line-up. It won’t be easy beating them but it will be a good challenge. I think we can take on that challenge and beat them.”We have not played Test matches in the UAE but we have watched videos of the Tests played there by Pakistan. I don’t know what the conditions and the pitch will be like playing a Test series during this time of the year there.”Since taking over the reins from Kumar Sangakkara, Dilshan first had former Australia cricketer Stuart Law as interim coach for the tour to England and then former Sri Lanka fast bowler Rumesh Ratnayake playing a similar role in the recently concluded home series against Australia, before Sri Lanka Cricket eventually found a permanent successor to Trevor Bayliss who quit at the end of the 2011 World Cup in April.”I have captained Sri Lanka with two different coaches in England and at home against Australia and now Marsh is the third. I never had an opportunity to sit down with one coach and discuss any long-term plans for the team,” Dilshan told .”Marsh is contracted for two years and he is a respected player and coach and I hope we can build on a good partnership and carry Sri Lanka cricket forward,” he said.”I have not spoken to him at length, the way I see it I think his presence will benefit a lot of youngsters and we can get a lot out of him to develop our cricket. While working together only we can find shortcomings and overcome them.”

Shah ton keeps Essex in the hunt

Owais Shah’s century kept Essex in the hunt for a place in the Clydesdale Bank40 semi-finals as they hammered Gloucestershire by 118 runs in their Group Cmatch at Colchester

21-Aug-2011
ScorecardOwais Shah’s century kept Essex in the hunt for a place in the Clydesdale Bank40 semi-finals as they hammered Gloucestershire by 118 runs in their Group Cmatch at Colchester. Shah struck an imperious 104 from 98 balls to point the way to a total of 299 for 7, to which the visitors responded with 181 all out.It also underlined Shah’s liking for Gloucestershire’s bowling as his lastcentury in the competition was for former county Middlesex at Cheltenham 12months ago. Arriving at the crease after Mark Pettini was removed by James Fuller with thefirst ball of the match, Shah put all the Gloucestershire bowlers to the swordwith some thrilling strokes. He hit four sixes amongst his 13 boundaries before Fuller had him caught on themid-wicket boundary. Shah shared in two substantial partnerships as Essex posted their season’s biggest total in the competition. The first came with Tom Westley with whom 113 were added in 16 overs. Westleycontributed 50 from 59 balls and when he became a victim of Ian Saxelby, JamesFoster arrived to inflict further punishment with Shah. Their fourth-wicket stand produced 96 in a dozen overs. Foster eventually followed Shah back to the pavilion, bowled by David Payne for 66 that arrived from 45 deliveries and contained seven fours and two sixes.Earlier, opener Adam Wheater made up for Pettini’s instant departure with aquickfire 40 from 22 balls. He had helped himself to 34 of those runs from boundaries before he drove Fuller to mid-off. Fuller finished with three for 62 from his eight overs afterhis first two had been maidens. The visitors hopes of mounting a serious challenge soon evaporated as DavidMasters and Graham Napier inflicted early damage grabbing the first threewickets inside the opening seven overs.Kevin O’Brien and Kane Williamson, the two batsmen most capable of taking onthe Essex attack, both fell to Masters whilst Napier removed skipper AlexGidman. Chris Taylor, a century-maker 24 hours earlier in the LV= County Championshipduel between the two teams, did his best to bring a semblance of respectabilityto his side’s cause. But, having scored a fluent 47 from 42 deliveries, he was undone by a brilliantpiece of fielding by Pettini. Taylor cut the ball hard to backward point where Pettini dived full length to stop the ball and throw it back a split second later for Foster to whip off thebails after the batsman attempted to return to the crease having set off for asingle. That left the West Country side 122 for 6 and, with Jack Taylor unable to batdue to a twisted ankle suffered in the field, slumping towards defeat. Masters then took two of the remaining three wickets to finish with four for 32 whilst Napier added another in returning two for 53 as Gloucestershire were bowled out with nine overs to spare.

Stuart Clark, the former Australia fast bowler, is keen to play another season with New South Wales, despite being in contention to become chief executive of one of Sydney’s two Big Bash League sides. Clark, who will be 36 by the time the next Australian season begins, has been interviewed for the role with one of the new city-based teams. The former international coach John Dyson is also considered a frontrunner, and both men could end up with jobs, with Cricket New South Wales set to make the appointments later this month. Sydney’s two Twenty20 sides for next summer’s new competition are the Thunder and the Sixers, and Clark must decide whether he wants to take charge of one of those outfits or extend his on-field career.”I’m leaning towards playing cricket at the moment,” Clark told the . “There’s no personal goals left. I’m lucky enough to have done pretty much everything in cricket [that I wanted to].”As much as I love playing cricket, there’s also life after cricket and what I want to do with life. It’s a tremendous opportunity; I’ll never shirk away from that. One of these Big Bash teams – I suppose that’s the future of cricket and gives me an opportunity to be involved and involved at the highest level.”As a player, Clark’s experience is valuable to the young New South Wales side, which he captained last season when Simon Katich was away on Australian duties. However, with Australia looking to younger bowlers, Clark won’t add to the 94 wickets that he collected in 24 Tests, the last of which he played on the 2009 Ashes tour.

Rangers team news on Roofe v RB Leipzig

Alan Hutton has dropped a Glasgow Rangers claim after what he has heard involving Kemar Roofe ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final.

The Lowdown: Available?

As per The Scottish Sun, Roofe is winning his fitness battle to feature in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final against RB Leipzig at Ibrox, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst is optimistic that he will play a part.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, the Dutch manager admitted that he ‘can’t say‘ for sure that the striker will make the squad, casting doubt on the validity of reports suggesting he’ll return.

The Latest: Hutton reacts

Speaking to Football Insider after hearing those updates, former Teddy Bears right-back now Rangers TV pundit Hutton has claimed that his old team should play Roofe if he is ready, as it is simply a ‘huge’ game for them: “It’s a difficult one, isn’t it?

“On one side, I’m saying yes, take the gamble. If he’s training and he says he’s ready to go then you play him.

“You have to play them because this is huge. We do say it week after week but this is the next game and it is the biggest game.

“Obviously you’ve got a cup final coming up but I don’t think you can rest somebody just for that. If he’s fit and available, I think you play him.”

The Verdict: Worth the risk

Of course, Roofe may not be fully fit, and may suffer from a lack of match sharpness, but adding him to the squad is surely worth the risk given what is at stake.

The Light Blues trail 1-0 from the first leg, and Roofe is their second-top scorer behind Alfredo Morelos this season, with 16 goals in total over all competitions so far.

Nonetheless, van Bronckhorst would surely want to play with an out-and-out number nine in order to not complicate his tactics or system, and if Roofe is ready, he should be unleashed upon the Leipzig defence.
