6,5
Arnaldo

4,0
Téc: Jair Ventura

Oval incident prompted Strauss to recall Mathews

Andrew Strauss’s decision to recall Angelo Mathews after he had been runout at the Wanderers was, according to the England captain, influenced inpart by a similar incident under Paul Collingwood’s leadership last year.Mathews was run out in the 40th over of Sri Lanka’s innings after pushingGraham Onions to leg and taking off for two. But as he turned for thesecond run, he collided with Onions and stopped as Matt Prior took off the bails.Mathews hung around for a while, unhappy with the decision andgesticulated to no one in particular, as sections of the crowd booed. TheEngland team got into a huddle and after Mathews was more than halfwayback to the pavilion, Strauss spoke to the umpires and called him back, amove applauded immediately by a small crowd.Mathews was dismissed a few balls later in any case, but the incident boreresemblance to when Grant Elliot of New Zealand collided with RyanSidebottom in an ODI at The Oval last year. Collingwood was captain thenand didn’t recall Elliott – though he regretted not doing so – and wassubsequently lambasted in sections of the press. And Strauss admitted that memories of the criticism prompted him make hisdecision tonight. “I didn’t see it because I was watching the ball at thetime,” Strauss said. “I then had a chance to look at the replay and theumpires said: ‘Well, it’s upto you if you want to call him back.’ Myfeelings on it were that it just didn’t look right. I also thought he wasgoing to get back for the two quite comfortably if he hadn’t collided. Iwould certainly say that I don’t think Graham Onions did anything wrong. There was no malice there at all. Other captains would be quite withintheir rights to not call him back. But I just felt…possibly having seenColly castigated for doing it a couple of years ago, it probably wasn’tthe right thing to do.”Collingwood, who was the Man of the Match tonight, said he didn’t get involvedin the decision. “I tried to keep out of it, to be honest. I just left himto make his own decision. But Straussy was straight in there, had a lookat the replay and said: ‘We’ll bring him back’,” he said before adding, injest, “I couldn’t believe it!”Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, also supported the notion thatOnions’ collision was unintentional. “It was an excellent gesture ofsportsmanship and in the spirit of the game. It’s all a matter ofinterpretation and it depends. It might’ve been an accident but at the endof the day the right thing was done.”

Journalist drops Spurs transfer message

Taking to Twitter, Italian reporter Daniele Longo has dropped a three-word Tottenham Hotspur transfer message involving Juventus winger Dejan Kulusevksi.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Kulusevski move…

As per recent reports, Tottenham have now entered the race to sign the Swedish youngster, with Antonio Conte, Fabio Paratici and even Daniel Levy apparently impressed by him.

Calciomercato first claimed that the Spurs chairman may open his purse strings in pursuit of the player and could be ‘serious’ about signing him. Meanwhile, according to TUTTOmercatoWEB, both Conte and Paratici believe that the 21-year-old is a ‘gem’ and share the same ‘esteem’ for his talent.

In an update, Calciomercato reporter Longo has responded to news account The Spurs Web with an exciting three-word message.

The Latest: Longo drops three-word claim…

Taking to social media, the Italian reporter reiterated Tottenham’s interest while sharing a fresh development. Indeed, according to his information, contact has now been made for Kulusevski as the Lilywhites ramp it up.

Responding to his own piece of news that Spurs want the Swedish talent, as shared by The Spurs Web, he simply stated: “Contacts in progress“.

The Verdict: What Spurs need?

There is currently an abundance of talent coming through at N17, with the likes of Oliver Skipp, Dane Scarlett and Troy Parrott recently emerging from Hotspur Way’s glittering academy.

However, that hasn’t stopped them from taking to the market in search of Europe’s most prestigious gems, with Paratici also holding an interest in Club Brugge talent Charles De Ketelaere (Calciomercato).

Already capped 19 times by Sweden at such a young age, Kulusevski has certainly been turning many heads, with footballing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo once calling him a ‘great talent’.

As Spurs make contact, potentially singing the youngster would come as a real coup.

Leeds: Robin Koch back in four weeks

Leeds United defender Robin Koch is expected to return to ‘serious training’ in around four weeks’ time, according to a fresh report which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Koch missing since opening weekend

The Whites lost 1-0 away to Southampton on Saturday afternoon as their disappointing start to the Premier League season continues.

Koch was among several key Leeds players who weren’t available, with the German ruled out since injuring his hip at Manchester United in the first game of the campaign.

The Latest: Return edging closer

The 25-year-old has now undergone surgery in America and an update has been provided on his progress.

According to SPORT1 [via Sport Witness], Koch is aiming to be in full training in four weeks, with ‘rehabilitation training’ starting in the next 10 days.

That means his likely return to the pitch will come in November, although not until the back-end of the month, and even that depends on him not suffering any further setbacks in the meantime.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-20/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Key for squad depth

Koch’s return will be vital for Marcelo Bielsa in terms of allowing him to rotate his squad as the fixtures become even more relentless in the winter months.

The £15.3m-rated German has been a miss in that respect, particularly with some of his defensive colleagues also succumbing to injuries in recent weeks, and the hope is that he can stay injury-free upon his return, helping Leeds get their season back on track.

Avaí apresenta novo uniforme e deve estrear a peça contra a Chapecoense

Aston Villa fans react to Dean Smith update

Aston Villa chiefs look set to stick with manager Dean Smith for the time being, according to reliable reporter Ashley Preece.

As to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been reacting to the news on social media.

Villa fell to a fifth consecutive defeat on Friday night against Southampton, which led to multiple supporters calling for him to be sacked amid a mood of toxicity. The club even reportedly made initial contact with former AS Roma manager Paulo Fonseca prior to the latest defeat, but it seems as if Smith will be handed more time in the Midlands.

Preece shared a story on Birmingham Live on Saturday, claiming that the 50-year-old will be given at least the Brighton game following the international break to salvage his Villa career.

Villa fans react

The AVFC Faithful relayed Preece’s claim on Twitter, which led to a number of Villa supporters hitting out at the club’s NSWE ownership and Christian Purslow for their reported decision, with one fan labelling it ‘horrendous’.

Gary Kirsten currently holds a two-year contract with India•AFP

Gary Kirsten has denied he is on the “very short shortlist” of candidates for the England coach’s job. Kirsten has been linked to the role in the British papers but he told he has not been contacted by the ECB.”I am not a candidate,” he said in Wellington where he is preparing the side for the third Test. Kirsten’s two-year contract with India began in March 2008 and Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s chief administrative officer, said “His contract is till March 2010”. N Srinivasan, the BCCI’s secretary, refused to comment on the reports and dismissed them as “speculation by the UK media”.Andy Flower, who is currently the stand-in coach after the sacking of Peter Moores in January, remained the favourite to be appointed as England’s new director of cricket, the and the reported. The reports claimed that a four-man ECB panel would interview the candidates on the shortlist at a secret location in the UK. Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, was also linked to the process though he said that he remained committed to his national contract till 2011.”We have had a robust and transparent process,” Hugh Morris, managing director of England cricket, told reporters in St Lucia yesterday. “We are pleased with those who have applied. Our interview process will begin when we get home at the weekend with a view to appointing the permanent post before the West Indies series.”Significantly, Morris said that he was impressed with the way Flower managed his role after he took over in diffcult circumstances, following the removal of Moores and Kevin Pietersen as captain. “He has taken the challenges on board, gained the respect of players and management team and done really well,” he said.

West Indies threaten boycott of fifth ODI

The possibility of a boycott of the fifth and final ODI between West Indies and England in St Lucia looms large with the West Indies captain Chris Gayle indicating that his team may not take the field on Friday if outstanding issues with the West Indies C

Cricinfo staff28-Mar-2009The possibility of a boycott of the fifth and final ODI between West Indies and England in St Lucia looms large with the West Indies captain Chris Gayle indicating that his team may not take the field on Friday if outstanding issues with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) remain unresolved.Only two days ago, Gayle said that the pay dispute wouldn’t affect the remainder of the series and West Indies’ forthcoming tour of England, with the hope that it would be resolved. However, speaking ahead of the fourth ODI in Barbados on Sunday, Gayle admitted his disappointment with the way the negotiations had unfolded between the board and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA).”I can say straight up that a boycott is a real possibility,” Gayle toldreporters on Saturday. “I am not going to go all around the world. I amgoing to say it plainly, ‘we need to have these matters resolved before theend of the series’, so we can forget about all of these disputes.”The WICB and WIPA had a two-day meeting earlier this week in Barbados to settle a number of issues including outstanding payments to the players from previous overseas tours. This happened after Dinanath Ramnarine, the WIPA president, quit as a director of the WICB, stating his position had become untenable due to the ongoing dispute.Gayle said the fourth match will proceed as scheduled but the fate of the fifth will depend on the developments over the next few days. “I am disappointed with the way things have been handled. I think they (WICB) arestill trying to bypass WIPA, and it is we, the players, that are instructingWIPA about what we want at this point in time,” Gayle said.”This is not a case, where WIPA goes off on its own and introduces thesesorts of things. We, the players, have asked for these changes, so basicallyfrom a contractual point of view, WIPA are the ones to sort them out, but Iam disappointed from what I hear.”There was a lot of speculation before the [third ODI] about whether thegame was going on. I know that I said I was looking forward to the game and so on and so forth. I would like to point out that I had not spoken to Ramnarine before attending the news conference [on Thursday], and when I got the feedback [from him], I got some disappointing news. It is not too good.”There are a lot of rumours out there, and they want to make WIPA look bad,and WIPA is not a bad thing, so we are very disappointed and will play thisgame on Sunday and see what happens in the next couple of days after this.”He also expressed his disappointment at reports in the media that five senior players were considering skipping the tour of England for the IPL in South Africa. It is understood that up to five players are upset that the tour clashes with the IPL and the WICB reacted saying a statement will be issued soon regarding their availability.”The players have come to me and are disappointed to see their names outthere in the media tarnished,” Gayle said. “It is not good. It is not right.”The arrangement was that there was to be no comments regarding thenegotiations, but we see these comments coming out, trying to get the publicagainst us, which I think will not happen. But we are all big men and we allhave to make our own decisions.”Up to this day, no one has really come to me about playing inthe IPL. But there is word on the street that there is a two-week window, and I could then fly to England.”

Aston Villa: Fans react to Preece’s post on Grealish

Birmingham Live reporter Ashley Preece gave his thoughts to Jack Grealish’s recent comments on his Aston Villa exit on Friday.

And a number of Villa supporters have reacted to Preece’s story on social media.

Grealish, who completed a £100m move to Manchester City in the summer, started for England in their 4-0 win over Hungary on Thursday.

However, prior to the game, ITV shared an interview with the 25-year-old where he reacted to his £100m release clause in his Villa contract.

Preece gave his thoughts to the interview and referenced Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips, England’s Player of the Year, when Grealish admitted that he needed to be playing Champions League football to enhance his international career.

Preece labelled the interview as a shocker that lacked class, with the Birmingham Live reporter’s story available to view in full here.

Villa fans react

He posted a link to his story on Twitter on Friday morning, and although Grealish himself has disputed the piece, these Villa fans were all in agreement, with one describing the report as ‘fantastic’.

“Ashley Preece, take a bow son. Brilliant article! It’s 100% spot on. The reason why I and others have lost any respect and love we had for a player we all once idolised. ”
