Brilliant Bopara takes Essex joint top

Ravi Bopara’s non selection for England is very much Essex’s gain who have him in the form of his life. He smashed 81 in just 44 balls to send Essex joint top of the South Group of the NatWest T20

ScorecardRyan ten Doeschate and Ravi Bopara took the game away from Kent•Getty ImagesRavi Bopara can shoulder very little of the blame for England’s winter failings, but at a time of flux in the Test side he has been pointedly ignored to the fact where adding to his 13 caps has never seemed such a distant possibility.Bopara’s unbeaten 81 from 44 balls offered further evidence for his belief that he is in the best form of his life and by granting Essex victory with one over to spare took them alongside Hampshire at the top of the South Division.More often than not, on his return to the county circuit, Bopara produces the type of striking performances that raise questions over his in ability to forge a permanent spot across all formats for England. His worth to Essex, however, is rarely belittled. On the back of a Championship hundred at the same ground this week, Bopara constructed an innings of consummate mastery that had most of the Canterbury crowd, despite their gloom at seeing as formidable Kent total overhauled, heading home satisfied with their evening’s entertainment.Essex made a steep target seem like child’s play – admittedly on a true surface – as Bopara combined with Ryan ten Doeschate to dismantle a Kent attack stymied by fielding lapses. Three chances were shelled, the most costly when Bopara was dropped by Daniel Bell-Drummond on 37.Bopara batted with a swagger that almost made it look as if he hand-picked which deliveries he wanted to dispatch with disdain. A combination brutality, deft strokeplay and inventiveness left Rob Key, the Kent captain, scratching his head.At the other end, ten Doeschate played the role of subordinate but was equally destructive after receiving a reprieve early-on when Doug Bollinger dropped a straight-forward chance at long-on.The Essex captain fell a couple short of an opportunistic half-century but Bopara ensured the job was complete without any hiccups. Often labelled ‘a finisher’, but rarely able to complete the job in an England shirt, he lived up to the tag by striking consecutive boundaries off James Tredwell in the penultimate over and then swatting the winning runs down the ground in fitting fashion.”It was good fun,” Bopara said afterwards. “We went out there with a plan and we executed it brilliantly. I’m in the best form of my life and I’ve been hitting it well so long may it continue.”For all the attention given to overseas luminaries and T20 specialists, Key continues to demonstrate that conventional batting in the shortest format yields healthy dividends. In scoring a half-century of his own, and in the process moving to the top of the competition’s run-scoring charts, he gave his side the perfect platform. However, the loss of Key succeeded the departure of Bell-Drummond and Essex managed to take a stranglehold of proceedings after the hosts made a blistering start; the openers had put on 119 one ball into the 13th over. But, two wickets in the following over from Tymal Mills in the fourteenth over checked their momentum.Mills, who bowled with pace, was expensive throughout as he struggled for a consistent line and length but provided an extra dimension to the attack in the second-half of the innings. A couple of late cameos from Sam Billings and Sam Northeast lifted Kent in the final overs but they were well below par; they had scored 218 here last week. That said, the wicket of Mark Pettini in the first over – an ugly heave across the line – hinted at the extravagance that was going to be required to chase down the tasking total. Instead, Pettini’s departure was but a minor hitch as Jesse Ryder and then Tom Westley cracked thirteen boundaries between them in the Powerplay overs to silence the home crowd and provide the platform for the middle-order. Bopara and ten Doeschate did the rest.

Jiwanjot, Kaul lead strong Punjab effort

ScorecardJiwanjot Sigh scored an unbeaten 188•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

With Vidarbha holding a lead of 148 runs overnight, and still with three wickets in hand, it was imperative that their tail wagged as long as possible. That, however was put to rest quickly in the first over of the day itself when Amol Jungade failed to add to his 59, getting caught behind off the bowling of seamer Sandeep Sharma.Punjab struck again four overs later when the No. 10 Sandeep Singh was dismissed for 8. Ravi Thakur, the last man, scored 8 himself as Vidarbha were dismissed for 360, holding a lead of 176 runs. Sandeep finished with 5 for 90, his sixth five-for in first-class cricket. VRV Singh, in his comeback season, continued his fine form with 4 for 89.Punjab started brightly, with openers Manan Vohra and Jiwanjot Singh adding 94 for the first wicket. Vohra fell soon after passing his fifty, getting run out in the 21st over. The wicketkeeper, Uday Kaul, came in at No. 3 and the pair batted till the end of the day, finishing on 330 for 1, and with a lead of 154 runs. Jiwanjot was not out on a massive 188, while Kaul was unbeaten on 88.
ScorecardParvinder Awana 10th five-for in first-class cricket helped Delhi secure a crucial first-innings lead. Odisha began the day on 121 for 3, still trailing Delhi’s first innings effort by 321 runs. Opener Natraj Behera, who was unbeaten on 53, helped add another 36 runs with Biplab Samantray, before Samantray was bowled on 48 by Awana. This brought Abhilash Mallick to the crease, and with Natraj, the pair helped double the score with a 157-run stand, before Mallick was caught behind on 71. Natraj crossed three figures, bringing up his fourth first-class century, and finished on 158, matching Rajat Bhatia’s effort in Delhi’s first innings. Odisha reached 379, with Awana picking up a five-wicket haul, and Varun Sood supporting him with 3 for 67. Delhi still had a 63-run lead going into their second innings. However, both openers perished with just 25 on the board, as Delhi finished at stumps on 49 for 2.
ScorecardKarnataka were bundled early on the third day to finish on 256, with Haryana’s Harshal Patel taking 6 for 55. Trailing by just nine runs, Haryana knew a strong effort would be required to create a sizable challenge for Karnataka. This notion, however, was tested early when opener Avi Barot was run out in the second over. Wickets continued to tumble at a regular rate, as Haryana’s batsmen failed to put on meaningful scores. Rahul Dewan, the captain, was the highest scorer with 31 as Haryana were bundled for 105, with seamer Ronit More inflicting the most damage with 5 for 20 in 14 overs. The target for Karnataka was set at 97, and despite losing four wickets to get to 62 at stumps, the visitors will still fancy themselves to get the 35 runs needed for victory on day four.

Nash proves just enough for Kent

ScorecardIan Bell made a fluent 35•Getty Images

Brendan Nash’s best one-day performance for Kent proved decisive as they squeezed past Warwickshire with a frantic one-run victory at Edgbaston.Nash, the former West Indies batsman, made an unbeaten 98 that lifted his side to 239 for 9. Warwickshire slumped to 185 for 8 in reply with 55 wanted from six overs but Jeetan Patel ensured a fluctuating contest went down to the wirePatel set about the bowlers with two sixes and six fours in a whirlwind 27-ball innings that threatened to pull off a dramatic rescue act for Warwickshire. It eventually came down to the last ball and two runs needed, but Patel’s heroics in making 50, his best one-day score, came to nothing when we was run out by Adam Ball.Kent were well in charge when the spin bowling of James Tredwell and his 21-year-old partner Adam Riley knocked Warwickshire off course. Riley crucially dismissed William Porterfield lbw for 47, and Tredwell captured the prized wicket when Varun Chopra was well caught at mid-off after making 67 in his build-up for England Lions duty later in the week. While Chopra played a measured innings, it was a mixed day for Warwickshire’s other England candidates, either those in the Test team or others pushing for selection. Ian Bell looked in imperious form in making 35, driving successive sixes off Mark Davies over long-on, but failed to clear midwicket off Matt Coles. Jonathan Trott made only 3 before nicking a catch off Davies. This came on top of a testing time for Chris Woakes and Chris Wright. The new-ball bowlers, who will be with Chopra in the Lions squad to meet New Zealand at Grace Road on Thursday, conceded 101 runs between them, although Woakes did pick up a couple of wickets.Kent may have promised more than they delivered after losing the toss. Rob Key made a brisk start with 44 until pulling offspinner Patel to midwicket, and as much as Nash kept the board ticking over, he struck only seven boundaries from 106 deliveries.Others attempted to be more destructive, notably Adam Ball with five fours in a rapid 28 and Coles with successive sixes off Woakes in reaching 20 from 11 balls. That Kent were unable kick on in the middle overs of their innings was mostly due to Darren Maddy on his first appearance of the season. Maddy, 39 later this month, took two wickets in five balls and held three catches, the first of these removing Key after a stand of 85 with Nash.

Perry confirms return home to New South Wales

The allrounder has spent six seasons with Victoria while remaining a Sydney Sixers player in WBBL

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Apr-2025Ellyse Perry has returned to New South Wales after six years playing her state cricket for Victoria.Although limited to 20 WNCL appearances for Victoria due to international commitments, Perry made 1052 runs at 75.14 alongside claiming 13 wickets. Her availability for NSW, who will be the defending WNCL champions, will also be restricted due to Australia duty. Next season she will be at the ODI World Cup during the early part of the season although there may be a window in January ahead of India’s visit for a multi-format series. While at Victoria, Perry has remained a Sydney Sixers player throughout in the WBBL.”The last six years I’ve spent in Melbourne and at Cricket Victoria have been extremely fond ones and I’m incredibly grateful for all the opportunities and memories that I’ll cherish,” Perry said.”I’m really looking forward to being back in Sydney and closer to my family and longtime friends. It’s been lovely to stay in touch with CNSW through the Sixers and I feel very fortunate to be walking back into a world class program.”Leah Poulton, NSW’s head of female elite cricket, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Ellyse back home to the Breakers. She’s not only one of the world’s premier cricketers, but also a role model and leader whose impact extends far beyond the field.”Pez’ professionalism, experience, and approach to the game make her an incredible asset to any team, and we’re excited to have her back in our program.”Perry has signed to play for Hampshire in July before linking up with Birmingham Phoenix for the Hundred in August.Australia have a quiet winter season and won’t be in action until an away ODI series against India in September which will provide preparation for the World Cup.

Samit Patel joins Warriors for T20

Samit Patel, the England allrounder, has signed as an overseas player for Warriors in South Africa’s domestic Twenty20 tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Feb-2013Samit Patel, the England allrounder, has signed as an overseas player for Warriors in South Africa’s domestic Twenty20 tournament. He is currently in New Zealand and will arrive in Port Elizabeth on February 25 to be available for the rest of the tournament. The final takes place on April 7 with Nottinghamshire’s first County Championship match, against Middlesex, starting on April 10.”I’m very excited to be joining the Chevrolet Warriors,” Patel said. “I’ve heard fantastic things about the team and the area. The Warriors have a history of doing well in this format and I hope I can add something extra and make this year a winning season. I want to thank my county in England for releasing me to play and speaking to the staff at the Warriors I really can’t wait to start.”Patel was among the Nottinghamshire players barred from going into the IPL auction by their county coach Mike Newell. Unlike the IPL, however, South Africa’s tournament takes place out of the English domestic season and will not require Patel to miss any county cricket even if Warriors make it to the final.Patel, 28, has played 18 T20 internationals for England and was approached about appearing in the now-delayed Pakistan Super League.

Manchester Test postponed indefinitely over Covid-19 fears

It remains to be seen how the boards can work out a window to play the match

Nagraj Gollapudi10-Sep-2021The fifth and final Test in Manchester has been postponed indefinitely in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak within the India squad. In a statement released on Friday, the BCCI said it was in talks with the ECB over conducting the match at a later date.”The BCCI and ECB held several rounds of discussion to find a way to play the Test Match, however, the outbreak of Covid-19 in the Indian team contingent forced the decision of calling off the Old Trafford Test Match.”In lieu (sic) of the strong relationship between BCCI and ECB, the BCCI has offered to ECB a rescheduling of the cancelled Test match. Both the Boards will work towards finding a window to reschedule this Test match.”Related

It remains to be seen how the boards can work out a window for the match, though one could possibly be carved out when India return to England next year for a scheduled limited-overs series. This development seems to have ended the possibility of India having to forfeit the Test match, though further developments are awaited.News that the match wouldn’t begin as originally planned came in hours before the scheduled toss. “Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team,” the ECB said in a statement. “We send our sincere apologies to fans and partners for this news, which we know will cause immense disappointment and inconvenience to many.”The development came on the back of intense discussions between the BCCI and the ECB after India’s assistant physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar returned a positive Covid-19 test on Wednesday. ESPNcricinfo understands more than one India player had expressed concerns about taking the field in talks between the BCCI and the team management over the last two days. The entire India squad returned negative RT-PCR tests on Thursday, but results of a second round of testing performed on Thursday are still awaited. It is understood that the players and both boards suspect another case emerging from this round of tests, and hence the BCCI told the ECB that India would struggle to put out a playing XI for the fifth Test, which was to be played at Old Trafford from September 10 to 14.A sense of confusion had spread among the Indian camp in the last two days even as the BCCI was in discussions with ECB over whether to carry on with the series or cancel the final Test. While the discussion carried on through the middle of Thursday night, the Indian contingent remained unaware of the what decision the BCCI was going to take. However, it is understood the BCCI did ask the players to keep their bags ready to fly out to the UAE for the IPL well ahead of the scheduled departure date of September 15, when the bulk of the India and England players were to board charter flights to join their franchises. Then on Friday morning, a few hours before the official toss time, the Indian camp received a message on their team WhatsApp group. The first message said: “The match has been called off. It’s impt that each one of you stay in your room.” About 10 minutes later another message popped up on the group: “We are unable to arrange breakfast in your room so if you want you can go to the restaurant to have your meal.”It was not the first instance of such mixed messages circulating in the India camp. After the entire squad returned negative RT-PCR tests on Thursday, it is understood that during one of the meetings with the BCCI, several players grouped into one room for the virtual discussion. The drama began after Parmar experienced Covid-19 symptoms immediately after returning from the first day of India’s training at Old Trafford on Wednesday. A positive lateral flow test triggered the BCCI medical team to send the entire squad back to their rooms, since Parmar had been in close contact with several India players in the last week. Parmar had only taken charge midway into the fourth Test at the Oval after lead physio Nitin Patel went into isolation after being identified as a close contact of India head coach Ravi Shastri, who tested positive for Covid-19 on the third evening of the fourth Test at The Oval.Ravi Shastri’s positive Test midway through the fourth Test at The Oval was the first case of Covid-19 in India’s camp•Getty Images

While three members of the contingent – Patel, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar – were identified as immediate contacts of Shastri, it was far more difficult to determine who the close contacts of Parmar were, considering he was treating a wider group of players. This included Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma. These players have been mingling among the wider group, which has made identifying close contacts even more complicated. In their chats with the BCCI, the players were also concerned about the situation having an impact on their families. Most of the India players are travelling with their families including Virat Kohli, Rohit, Ajinkya Rahane, Pujara, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant and Umesh Yadav. The key concern, though, for the BCCI was it did not want the IPL to be impacted considering it is starting in nine days’ time. With that in mind the BCCI discussed cancelling the final Test, but the ECB is understood to have made it clear that it would interpret any refusal to play as a forfeiture. The BCCI was keen to avoid such a scenario, as not only would it see England square the series, but it could expose the BCCI to claims of lost revenue from broadcasters and the venue. Lost revenue could, it is thought, total up to GBP 30 million. The World Test Championship competition terms state that a Covid-19 outbreak within a team is an acceptable reason for a Test to be abandoned – and not forfeited. With the WTC points system now calculated on the basis of percentage of points contested, a four-Test series instead of five would not adversely impact a side’s points total.Had the boards not agreed to the postponement, the series result could have gone into the hands of the ICC match referee Chris Broad based on whether the ECB accepted India’s fears of a larger outbreak in their camp as “acceptable non-compliance” as per the WTC regulations. A cancellation would have given India a 2-1 series victory, and a forfeiture led to a 2-2 draw.Currently India have pocketed 26 WTC points from the series while England have 14 out of the available 48 points.
