Leeds must unleash Liam McCarron

Leeds United managed to secure a top-half finish in the Premier League table in their first season back in the division after a lengthy 16-year absence.

Despite this impressive feat, the Whites were susceptible to conceding goals throughout the campaign, with 54 in total, which is more than Fulham managed to who ended up getting relegated.

Things have been much worse for the Yorkshire club on that front this season, with 61 now conceded with 27 league games played.

They have now appointed Jesse Marsch as the new manager following the departure of Marcelo Bielsa, meaning there could potentially be some changes made by the American if he feels it’s necessary to help his side avoid relegation.

One possible change that could be made for a short-term and possible long-term benefit for the club is to give left-back Liam McCarron a chance to prove himself in the senior side.

Since joining the Elland Road outfit back in the 2019 summer transfer window from Carlisle United, the defender has made 32 appearances for Leeds’ U23 side, scoring four goals and providing one assist along the way.

Labelled as having an “unbelievable” work rate by Carlisle academy manager Darren Edmondson, the 21-year-old made his senior debut for the Whites back in December during their 4-1 defeat against Arsenal where he came on for a nine-minute cameo.

Even though Junior Firpo has played in the majority of Leeds’ league games this season, the fact that he has managed to rack up fewer interceptions (26), blocks (24) and successful tackles (26) than a fair number of his teammates, could sway Marsch into taking him out of the side to see if McCarron could be a better option.

While it could be a gamble to throw the youngster into the side at such a crucial stage of the campaign given his lack of senior game time, it may be a risk that heavily pays off for the team if he can impress defensively and offer something going forward.

If this were to happen and McCarron was able to cement himself as a regular first-team player for Marsch’s side, he could potentially save Victor Orta millions in future transfer fees if they aim to secure big-money replacements for the likes of Luke Ayling or Stuart Dallas.

Spurs: Romano makes Kane claim on Instagram

Fabrizio Romano took to Instagram on Saturday evening to make a claim on Tottenham captain Harry Kane after his starring display against Manchester City.

The Lowdown: Kane at the double

Kane has had a fairly quiet Premier League campaign by his standards, scoring just five times in 21 games prior to the trip to Manchester City.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He saved his best display of the season for the side that made four approaches for his services over the summer, though, scoring twice in a dramatic 3-2 win.

The 28-year-old netted a brace in the second half to ensure Spurs completed the double over the defending champions, with his header in injury time proving to be the difference.

The Latest: Romano’s post

Romano took to Instagram to talk about Kane shortly after his stoppage-time winner at the Etihad.

He once again shared details of City’s four summer bids, revealing Fabio Paratici played a key part in the decision to keep the striker.

Romano then added that Kane’s relationship with Antonio Conte is understood to be ‘excellent’. The Italian wants Kane to be a key part of his long-term project, however, no decision has been made when it comes to penning new terms in north London.

The Verdict: Spurs still in control

Kane will still have two years remaining on his current contract in the summer, so Daniel Levy will still be in control when it comes to the forward’s future.

Of course, in an ideal world, Kane would commit his future to the club by penning fresh terms, but for that to happen, Tottenham chiefs and Conte may need to convince the captain regarding the club’s long-term project.

A positive end to the current campaign along with promises to invest in the squad over the summer would be a strong start when it comes to persuading Kane, and hopefully, he can back up his display on Saturday to help Spurs in a push for the top four over the coming months.

In other news: Romano makes late night claim on more ‘good news for Spurs’ immediately after win at Man City.

Cook rockets Essex to victory

Scorecard
An unbeaten century from Alastair Cook made sure Essex avenged their 10-wicket defeat by Yorkshire in the first Clydesdale Bank 40 League match of the season by gaining a comfortable seven-wicket victory in the return fixture at Headingley.Yorkshire were guaranteed a home semi-final tie at Scarborough next Saturday regardless of the result and they have been drawn against Warwickshire, while Essex’s win took them into the last four and their reward is a visit to Taunton to take on Somerset.Chasing a target of 210 on a good batting pitch, Essex looked as if they were well capable of mirroring Yorkshire’s achievement at Chelmsford as Mark Pettini and Cook piled up 161 together for the first wicket. But Pettini then hung out his bat at paceman Ben Sanderson and was caught behind by Gerard Brophy for 82 from 86 deliveries with six fours and two sixes, both of the big hits being scored at the expense of left-arm spinner David Wainwright.Grant Flower was lbw to Wainwright in the following over to bring in Matt Walker, who smacked a breezy 19 before falling lbw to Pyrah just short of the finishing line. There was still sufficient time, however, for Cook to complete an unblemished century of 110 balls with ten fours and a six, the winning boundary then being thumped by Ryan ten Doeschate with 21 balls remaining.A combination of determined bowling, spearheaded by David Masters, and superb wicketkeeping by James Foster restricted Yorkshire to a disappointing 209 for eight after they had been put in to bat. Masters, who bowled a fine opening spell, finished with figures of 4 for 41, including two wickets off consecutive balls, while Foster pulled off a sharp stumping and held on to three catches. The Masters-Foster combination accounted for the first two dismissals, with skipper Andrew Gale out of his crease as Foster whipped off the bails while standing up to the stumps and Adam Lyth then neatly caught behind.Once again Yorkshire’s biggest contribution came from Jacques Rudolph, whose 59 from 68 balls with three fours took him to 755 runs in the competition – putting him two runs ahead of Darren Lehmann, who had held the White Rose record for the number of runs in a season. There was also a finely struck half-century from Brophy, who helped Yorkshire recover from 41 for three through a fourth-wicket stand of 82 with Rudolph which ended when the left-handed opener aimed a cut at Chris Wright and was caught by Foster.Brophy completed his 50 off 64 balls by cutting Ryan ten Doeschate for his third boundary but he was bowled off his pads by the next delivery before Masters chipped in with two in two, bowling Adil Rashid and pinning Pyrah lbw. Yorkshire were helped to a respectable total by Jonathan Bairstow whose two boundaries were both sixes, the first straight driven off Wright and the second achieved by flicking Masters off his legs.Yorkshire skipper Gale said later: “Warwickshire have got a good record and are playing good cricket but we would have taken either them or Essex at Scarborough. “I was not particularly bothered who we would play in the semi-final, I was just glad to get through at Northampton last week.”Ever since I put on a Yorkshire shirt as an 11-year-old I have dreamt of leading the side out at Lord’s and to get there would mean the world to myself and all of the lads who will be giving 110 per cent to get to the final.”I am not too worried about losing today – to win ten games out of 12 is a great effort. I thought 260-270 was a par score but losing three wickets in the first 10 overs put us under a lot of pressure and we didn’t leave our bowlers enough to bowl at.”We will certainly miss Tim Bresnan in the semi-final but I am hopeful that Ajmal Shahzad will be released by England and will be available to to play for us.”

Manchester United: Fabrizio Romano drops Edinson Cavani injury news

Fabrizio Romano has shared some ‘bad news’ for Manchester United regarding forward Edinson Cavani.

The Lowdown: Cavani’s injury problems

Cavani’s 2021/22 season has been one to forget, with the striker missing large parts of the campaign due to quarantine issues, knocks, tendon irritation and most recently a groin problem.

The 35-year-old has been limited to just six Premier League starts as a result, making a return to action against Tottenham prior to the international break.

He went away with Uruguay and featured against both Peru and Chile, however, Cavani appears to have picked up a fresh problem during the international break.

The Latest: Romano’s post

Romano took to Twitter in the early hours of Wednesday morning to relay news of Cavani’s latest injury. He said:

“Bad news for Manchester United as Edinson Cavani leaves the pitch with an injury during Uruguay game. New problem for el Matador.”

Manchester United have since confirmed that the striker is now a doubt for the match with Leicester City on Saturday following the fresh problem.

The Verdict: End of the road?

Cavani impressed during his first season at Old Trafford, scoring 17 goals in all competitions to earn him a new 12-month deal.

Unfortunately, the experienced striker hasn’t been able to replicate his form this year, so a summer exit could well be on the cards.

It looks set to be a summer of change for the Red Devils off the pitch, with a new manager coming in to replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

Cavani is just one of a number of United players out of contract at the end of June, so his days at the club could be numbered following this latest injury blow.

Clinical South Africa wrap up series 2-0

South Africa inflicted a dispiriting series loss on West Indies at a venue that was once the home team’s fortress and finished the tour unbeaten

Hawk-eye
Morne Morkel polished off the West Indian tail in quick time•AFPSouth Africa inflicted a dispiriting series loss on West Indies at a venue that was once the home team’s fortress and finished the bilateral tour unbeaten. Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s hopes of compiling a competitive lead on the fourth morning were quashed by a menacing spell from Morne Morkel, who cut through the West Indies tail to ensure a quick end to their resistance.Chanderpaul had stood firm amid West Indies’ capitulation on the third day, and taken his team into the lead with support from Shane Shillingford, who was dismissed shortly before stumps. The men who followed, though, were unable to put up a fight.Morkel attacked Sulieman Benn from round the wicket, getting the ball to move both ways and troubling the left-hander who played and missed often. He was ultimately done in by one that nipped back in sharply to break through his defences and send the off stump cartwheeling. Kemar Roach followed soon after, edging a drive to Mark Boucher after a series of short balls.Chanderpaul had shown confidence in the tail, not hesitating to pick singles early in the over, but was left watching as his partners fell quickly. The debutant Brandon Bess poked a short-of-length delivery to slip, as Morkel polished off the tail in three overs, leaving South Africa just 47 to chase. Roach displayed plenty of aggression, nipping out three wickets, striking Graeme Smith on the neck with a bouncer, and even getting involved in an extended verbal exchange with Jacques Kallis. But the game was over and done with. The West Indies captain Chris Gayle had called on his batsmen to shoulder more responsibility during his team’s 5-0 debacle in the one-dayers. However, some of those who did play the Test series failed to fulfil to their role. Dale Richards, drafted in for this Test in place of Travis Dowlin, conceded his wicket cheaply in both innings, playing across the line to be trapped plumb, and spooning a catch off a needless pull.More worrying would be the case of Narsingh Deonarine. He had looked solid in the first innings before, inexplicably, switching to an aggressive approach to be bowled. In the second, he played a reckless drive first ball to offer a catch to short cover. Equally irresponsible was the dismissal of Denesh Ramdin, the former vice-captain, who slashed a wide delivery to the keeper in the second innings.Though South Africa’s pace attack had far more venom, the battle in the spin department was more evenly contested with each of the four frontline spinners in this Test extracting assistance from a gradually deteriorating track. The move to pick a spinner, Johan Botha, in place of left-arm seamer Lonwabo Tsotsobe, proved decisive for the visitors. And the seamers Dale Steyn and Morkel, on a pitch that was of lesser benefit to them than the slow bowlers, varied their lengths superbly, ruffling up the batsmen with the short deliveries and creating the temptation to play by pushing the odd one fuller. But while South Africa, with more assuredness in their batting and a generally superior outfit, were favourites throughout, their task was made easier by the reckless approach adopted by their opponents.

Singapore cricket "badly hurt" by ICC decision – Captain

Munish Arora has said the outcome of the ICC enquiry into the incidents that marred the finish of the World Cricket League Division Five game between Nepal and USA in Kirtipur was as a major setback to cricket in his country

Tony Munro19-May-2010

The decision has put Singapore cricket “back by a few years”, says Munish Arora•ICC/CricketEurope

Munish Arora, the Singapore captain, has said the outcome of the ICC enquiry into the incidents that marred the finish of the World Cricket League Division Five game between Nepal and USA in Kirtipur was a major setback to cricket in his country. The Singapore Cricket Association had claimed the crowd disturbance and the consequent revised target formulated by the technical committee had resulted in a back-door entry for Nepal into Division Four at Singapore’s expense. The inquiry, conducted by top ICC officials Dave Richardson, David Becker and Ravi Sawani, ruled against SCA’s claims earlier this month. “The damage has been done enough for cricket in Singapore,” Arora told Cricinfo. “The Singapore team is badly hurt by the decision. The way the team performed in Division Five, there was no doubt we could possibly advance further in ICC tournaments but the decision has really put our cricket back by a few years.”The match was disrupted in the closing stages by the unruly home crowd, with USA set for a facile win that would have brought Nepal below Singapore in the league standings. As it transpired, the 45-minute delay caused by the crowd disturbance meant the target was revised significantly enough to lift Nepal’s net run-rate above Singapore’s by a slender margin, giving the home side a fortuitous entry into Division Four. The ICC, in its enquiry report, made recommendations that the proposed mandatory safety standards being introduced by the ICC security task force considers including sanctions against the home board when the home crowd interrupts a match, particularly when it benefits the home team. The investigation covered all aspects of the controversy including the net run-rate calculations, the reactions of the match officials and the nature of the security-related issues which arose during the match. The Cricket Association of Nepal has already accepted a directive to not host further international cricket at the venue until remedial measures were carried out, including the reconstruction of the boundary wall that was damaged by stone-throwers looking for projectiles to hurl into the ground.

End of IPL for Damien Martyn

Damien Martyn, the former Australian batsman, has headed home after being excluded from a trimmed Rajasthan Royals squad. He played only one game in the tournament after being surprisingly picked at the IPL auction, despite being out of top-level cricket for several years.”By the time you read this I’ll be heading home,” Martyn wrote on his blog. “The Rajasthan Royals squad has been trimmed to 19 players and it looks like allrounder Shane Watson might join us next week. That’s the nature of professional cricket and I knew from the start what my role in the squad was and how this might happen.”Martyn, 38, made a scratchy 19 in his only IPL appearance, against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, before being dropped for the next couple of games by Rajasthan. “I enjoyed my IPL debut last week and even though it wasn’t the best result (19 off 24 balls) it’s ironic that ever I was to play it had to be against the best bowler in the world. Dale Steyn, bowling 155kmph.”He also hinted that he was through with playing, and was looking at coaching opportunities. “I have enjoyed my time as a player but going forward I’m looking forward to new roles around the group, like all past players, getting my notebook out, sitting in the dugout and scribbling away.”Rajasthan made a poor start to the tournament, losing their first three matches but have bounced back with two victories in a row.

– Hawilla, me desculpa, presta atenção. Com base na nossa amizade, eu passei a vida toda contigo. E eu confio em você completamente. Nunca te questionei nada. Mas você está sendo um tremendo c… Como você desconfia de mim? – reclamou.

Sunderland manager news on Johnson

Many Sunderland fans have been left buzzing as an official post from the Wearside club emerged on Lee Johnson.

The Stadium of Light faithful tweeted that Johnson has been voted as League One’s Manager of the Month (MOTM) for December, the second time that he has picked up the award this season.

He helped his team pick up four wins in the division last month, including 5-0 thumpings of both Morecambe and Sheffield Wednesday at home, and only conceded three goals in the league over the period (BBC). All in all, the Black Cats scored 17 times in December.

The results leave them in second place in the table, and currently on course for automatic promotion up to the Championship, highlighting the good job that Johnson has done recently.

Nonetheless, it is an award that is thoroughly deserved, as the Black Cats now look to push on for the second half of the season.
