All differences rectified – Gayle

Chris Gayle has said that all differences between him and the WICB have been resolved and his aim now is to give a lift to Caribbean cricket.

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jun-2012Chris Gayle, who played his first innings in West Indies colours since the 2011 World Cup against Middlesex on Wednesday, has said that all differences between him and the WICB have been resolved and his aim now is to give a lift to Caribbean cricket.”Everything has been rectified,” Gayle said. “The main objective is to contribute to West Indies cricket and uplift it. I’m available for all formats of the game. Hopefully I can get some runs in whites and in coloured clothes.”Gayle had been in international exile after the World Cup following the breakdown of his relationship with the WICB and was restricted to plying his trade, quite successfully, in domestic Twenty20 leagues around the world. After prolonged discussions with the WICB, Gayle eventually pulled out of a contract with Somerset to show his commitment to West Indies, following which he was selected in the squad for the limited-overs series against England. He began his comeback with 34 off 30 deliveries in the West Indians’ big win over Middlesex in the tour match at Lord’s and admitted to feeling “a bit nervous” at the start. “It is good to be back in my No. 45 jersey I represented West Indies in once. I started out a bit nervous, I am human, but things came along well after that. Unfortunately I got out. I am looking forward to the first ODI and should be in a better state of mind.”Gayle said at the moment it was very important for him to fit into the squad as quickly as possible. “Once you get settled in everything will come back to normal. You get that feel again in any environment which you have been out of for a year. Once you get back that feeling, once you get back into your comfort zone, things will be much easier.”I want to contribute more. Hopefully get a few more centuries for West Indies. The most important thing is to try and get a couple of series wins. Because the pressure has been there. Even when I wasn’t playing, the pressure has still been there outside. I am still a part of it whichever way you look at it.”Gayle has declared himself available for all three formats of the game, so should return to Test cricket on July 25 against New Zealand in Antigua – his first Test since December 2010. His return also provides a major boost to West Indies’ chances at the World T20 in September. In the absence of Gayle, and another veteran Ramnaresh Sarwan, West Indies’ focus has been on building a squad for the future under coach Ottis Gibson and captain Darren Sammy. Gayle agreed that youngsters were the future. “When you look at guys like Adrian Barath or Kieran Powell or even young Darren Bravo, they have long contributions to make for West Indies cricket. They are the future. You cannot just hide them or throw them away. You still have to keep them in the group. And hopefully with experience things are going to be well.”Looking ahead to the ODI series against England, Gayle said while West Indies have a talented squad with plenty of powerhitters, they “still have a lot to do by rotating the strike, picking up the singles and playing smart cricket.”England and West Indies play three ODIs and a T20 later this month with the first one-dayer at West End on June 16.

Swann named England's winter MVP

Graeme Swann has been named as England’s Most Valuable Player over the winter, according to the ranking system used by the PCA

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Apr-2012Graeme Swann has been named as England’s Most Valuable Player over the winter, according to the ranking system used by the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA). Swann’s 10-wicket haul against Sri Lanka earlier this month helped England to a first Test win in five matches and took his tally to 39 wickets in all formats.Swann held off Kevin Pietersen, who scored 151 as England levelled the two-Test series with Sri Lanka at 1-1, to win the FTI MVP award, which includes a cheque for £2,000 to be given the charity Lowe Syndrome Trust. Swann has previously been England’s MVP twice before – after the tours to South Africa and Bangladesh in 2009-10 and following the 2010 English summer. The draw in Colombo – in which Swann finished with match figures of 10 for 181 – also ensured England retained their No. 1 Test ranking for a while longer.”I’m delighted to have won the FTI MVP after what has been a tough winter and it’s obviously great that we’re still number one too,” Swann said. “It is nice to win any award but it is especially pleasing to win one where you are compared to your team-mates on hard statistics.”Losing the three Tests against Pakistan was a real blow, but we picked ourselves up in the ODIs and again after the defeat in Galle to prove there’s plenty of fight in this team. The performance in Colombo bodes well for the summer, and hopefully we can carry that momentum into the Test series against the West Indies.”Sebastian Mathews, senior vice-president of FTI Consulting, said: “Congratulations to Graeme on his win, not only for this winter, but for becoming the first person to win a hat-trick of England FTI MVP awards. It was a very exciting end to the winter FTI MVPs where Graeme was run very close and this sets us up for an exciting summer of cricket ahead of us.”The MVP ranking system, used by the PCA since 2007, takes into account factors such as bowlers’ economy rates and the percentage of a team’s runs scored by individual batsmen, alongside more standard measurements such as wickets, runs and catches.Swann also topped the individual Test statistics with 146 points from five matches at an average of 29.17. His total was over 40 points clear of nearest challenger James Anderson. ODI captain Alastair Cook led from the front in 50-over cricket, topping the standings with 113 points, while Pietersen, who scored 30% of England’s runs in the shortest format, was the T20 FTI MVP.Edited by Alan Gardner

Roach to join Worcestershire

Kemar Roach has become the latest West Indian signing in county cricket and will be joining Worcestershire for the remainder of the season as they scrap to stay in Division One of the County Championship. Roach will replace Worcestershire’s current overseas international Saeed Ajmal, who is returning to his national side earlier than scheduled next week, to participate in a training camp prior to embarking on Pakistan’s tour of Zimbabwe.”I am delighted to sign for Worcestershire and to be able to play county cricket for the first time,” said Roach. “Growing up in Barbados, every young cricketer aspired to play for the West Indies and to play county cricket. Many of my heroes like Lara, Walsh and Ambrose spent time in the county game and I view it as a huge challenge.”Even though I am only going to be joining for a short period, I believe this stint gives me the chance to make an impact on the club and on county cricket and hopefully be the start of a long relationship with Worcestershire.”Roach joins Worcestershire on the back of international duty in the Caribbean, having opened the bowling against India and Pakistan earlier this year. In his fledgling career, Roach has taken 40 Test wickets at an average of 29.90, and has a total of 87 first-class wickets in 31 matches.”To have one of the fastest bowlers in the world in our team for the last few games of the season can only be a huge plus factor,” said Worcestershire’s director of cricket, Steve Rhodes. “Albeit a short stint, I know that Kemar is determined to make an impact on the county scene.”Ajmal, who arrived at New Road in June, has claimed 36 wickets for the county across all forms of cricket. He leaves as their highest wicket taker in the Clydesdale Bank 40 this season, having taken 11 wickets. His most notable performance came in the recent match against Derbyshire, where he picked up 4 for 24.”We’ve enjoyed Saeed’s involvement with the team and he’s been a model professional both on and off the field,” said Rhodes. “We’d like to thank Saeed for the time he has spent with us, and also for his help in guiding and inspiring some of our younger bowlers. Obviously we were disappointed that he’s had to leave us early but in the hectic international schedule we recognise that international cricket comes first.”

Paul Collingwood joins Perth Scorchers

Paul Collingwood will be the second international star, alongside Herschelle Gibbs, on the Perth Scorchers’ Big Bash League roster

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jul-2011Paul Collingwood will be the second international star, alongside Herschelle Gibbs, on the Perth Scorchers’ Big Bash League roster. The signings continued apace on Tuesday, with the Melbourne Renegades naming a near-full squad including the fast bowlers Shaun Tait and Dirk Nannes, who will head a fearsome attack for the side based at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne’s Docklands. The Renegades will wait until later in the week to confirm their international players, but there has been no such delay for the Scorchers. The coach of the Scorchers, Mickey Arthur, said the team would benefit greatly from the presence of Collingwood, who captained England to the World Twenty20 title last year and has a less busy schedule than he used to, having retired from Tests.”I stated last week that overseas recruits need to bring outstanding qualities, and Paul Collingwood is another who offers so much to our set-up,” Arthur said. “Paul is a brilliant leader of men who helped mould his country’s T20 side into an exciting and ruthless combination, which culminated in their triumph over Australia in the final of last year’s World T20 in Barbados.”Being the first skipper to lead England to victory at an ICC men’s event was a massive feather in his cap. Paul is a gutsy and determined batsman who can lift the scoring rate with his attacking stroke play, he is a proven wicket-taker with the ball and is first class in the field. I am thrilled to welcome him as our second overseas signing.”Perth have also locked in the wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi, along with Western Australia’s new fast-bowling recruits Nathan Rimmington and Mark Cameron. Meanwhile, in Melbourne, Brad Hodge, Andrew McDonald and Aaron Finch are the big-name Victorians to have joined the Renegades, who have already confirmed 14 of their 18 players. The Renegades coach Simon Helmot, who is an assistant at Victoria under Greg Shipperd, will have plenty of experience in his coaching staff after Dean Jones and Merv Hughes signed up as batting and bowling mentors. In addition to the South Australian fast man Tait, the Renegades have also brought in the Queensland batsman Nathan Reardon and the left-arm spinner Aaron Heal, who was axed from Western Australia’s squad earlier this year. The surprise signing was that of Brenton McDonald, 27, a legspinner and the brother of former Test allrounder and Renegade Andrew McDonald. The team won’t be short on aggression in the attack, with Nannes and Tait to be joined by the fiery fast man Jayde Herrick and the veteran Shane Harwood, who lost his Victoria contract last month. The Renegades’ cross-town rivals, the MCG-based Stars, have not yet named any of their squad but it is expected to feature several other Victoria players including Cameron White and David Hussey. In other signings on Tuesday, the Hobart Hurricanes locked in the Tasmania quartet of Mark Cosgrove, Rhett Lockyear, Evan Gulbis and Matt Johnston, while the Sydney Sixers confirmed the wicketkeeper Peter Nevill would be part of their group. The squads so far

Dilshan and Paranavitana hit hundreds

On the first day at Uxbridge it was the England captain reacquainting himself with first-class cricket and on the second it was the turn of Sri Lanka’s

ESPNcricinfo staff15-May-2011
ScorecardTillakaratne Dilshan took a liking to Middlesex’s inexperienced bowling attack•AFPOn the first day at Uxbridge it was the England captain reacquainting himself with first-class cricket and on the second it was the turn of Sri Lanka’s. Barely three days after flying in from the IPL for this tour, Tillakaratne Dilshan helped himself to 123 on a productive day for the tourists’ top order against a weak Middlesex attack as Tharanga Paranavitana also made 103.The value of these runs will be tempered by the fact that none of the Middlesex bowlers are regular first-team players, but Dilshan and Paranavitana made the most of the friendly fare on offer and a flat surface. As the opening day confirmed the suspicion that Sri Lanka’s bowling will suffer, today’s action showed the batting should be able to hold itself together. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara will arrive next week and along with Dilshan and Thilan Samaraweera they form a potent line-up. England’s bowlers may toil as well. There is often much made about the switch from Twenty20 to first-class cricket, but Dilshan took one style into the other and set off at a pace more akin to the IPL he has just left. although he was dropped at second slip on 10. Middlesex’s young seamers, Tom Parsons and Gurjit Sandhu, had a tough introduction while left-arm spinner Tom Smith was taken for 14 in his first over.Dilshan’s fifty came from 48 balls and he only slowed a little to reach three figures from 108 deliveries before retiring midway through the afternoon session to give his team-mates a chance. England’s bowlers know plenty about Dilshan – he struck an unbeaten 108 in the World Cup quarter-final – and will have to ensure they can string some maiden overs together against him.Paranavitana, as he often has been during his 16-match Test career, was content to ride in Dilshan’s slipstream and play at his own pace. It has caused some surprise that Upul Tharanga, who helped Dilshan secure the 10-wicket victory over England in Colombo, doesn’t make the Test squad these days but Paranavitana has made a promising start with two hundreds and an average of 37.However, all his 16 Tests to date have been on the subcontinent so his challenge will be to adapt to the extra bounce that Strauss will hope the Test pitches offer. It helps Sri Lanka’s cause that the first Test is in Cardiff, one of slower surfaces in the country, and the England management will wish for more carry than the Ashes pitch two years ago.On this slow pitch at Uxbridge, Paranavitana had few problems adjusting during his 145-ball hundred before remaining in the pavilion after the tea interval. That allowed two of Sri Lanka’s rising talents, Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal, to add an unbroken 59. Chandimal dominated the stand and may take the No. 6 spot during the Tests after a prolific domestic season.Sri Lanka could have batted on for the remainder of the day, but Dilshan showed another of his positive sides when he gave Middlesex a short session. It paid off as Suranga Lakmal removed Sam Robson for a duck and more success on the final day will leave the tourists in decent heart.

Rangers must unleash Calvin Bassey

Rangers turn their attention away from Premiership action for now as they face the prospect of a UEFA Europa League semi-final clash.

The Gers play in the first-leg of their last-four meeting tonight in Germany as they look to set up a tasty second-leg at Ibrox under the lights next week.

Gio van Bronckhorst’s men come into the game off the back of four straight wins in all competitions, beating Motherwell 3-1 in their last domestic outing.

In their Premiership victory last weekend, one player let themselves down as Leon Balogun was given his marching order by the referee in the 28th minute. Although the red card does not rule him out of this clash, Rangers need as much positive momentum as possible heading into this match and playing a player off the back of a low like that could be a mistake.

Therefore, van Bronckhorst must bring Calvin Bassey back into the starting XI to play next to Connor Goldson at the heart of the defence.

Leicester youth coach Steve Beaglehole previously dubbed him as “phenomenal” and that is exactly what he has been for the Gers since the Dutch head coach came through the door.

In the Premiership this term, he has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 6.95 and he has been rewarded for his form by winning the club’s Men’s Young Player of the Year award. He has shown that he can excel at left-back and centre-back and his versatility is another reason why he has been phenomenal for van Bronckhorst as he has been able to slot into multiple positions whilst maintaining a high standard of performance.

Journalist Josh Bunting has described his improvement this season as “ridiculous” as the £6.4k-per-week gem has gone from playing eight times in the league last term to 27 outings in the current campaign.

Bassey has also caught the eye in Europe with an average score of 6.91 in the competition. He has made 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game and won an impressive 70% of his ground duels – showing that he has been physically dominant for the Gers at the back.

The Nigerian brute has been a reliable, quality, player for van Bronckhorst in all competitions and that is why he must now be unleashed against RB Leipzig tonight. Balogun must be dropped after his red card and replaced by the 22-year-old, who has shown that he can put in excellent displays in the Europa League.
